That is why the nationally recognized WNC beer scene is collaborating again, and raising the stakes, to bring awareness to the issue of hunger in Western North Carolina. Over twenty local breweries are joining forces to help support MANNA FoodBank’s mission to end hunger for thousands of families across WNC through the 2nd annual Hops for Hunger campaign, July 1st – 31st.

One of the most celebrated and respected performers of her generation, Jenny Lewis got her start as the dynamic frontwoman of influential LA group Rilo Kiley in 1998. She has since released three albums under her name, most recently 2014’s The Voyager. In addition to her solo work, she was a member of The Postal Service, part of the duo, Jenny and Johnny, as well as the lead vocalist for Nice As Fuck.
Lewis has collaborated with Beck, Elvis Costello, Ryan Adams and M. Ward, among others. She has also written music for films such as the musical/drama, Song One, starring Anne Hathaway and Very Good Girls starring Dakota Fanning and Elizabeth Olsen.

Oil paintings, handcrafted quilts, pottery, and jewelry in several different media will be on display at the Leicester Library throughout the month of July. Most people know that our bodies need fat for insulation, energy, and protection, but our cultural relationship with this macronutrient has been tenuous at best for over fifty years. Even cooks who have embraced putting natural fats back into their foods are often still confused about sources, uses, and safety. “Fat is making a comeback,” says Asheville-based food writer and chef Meredith Leigh, “but we still have a long way to go.” Leigh serves as Education and Outreach Coordinator at Living Web Farms, where she will teach a class all about fat as an essential element of cooking, this coming July 17 th at 6pm at the farm in Mills River. Leigh shares that there are still people who regard fat as a food to fear, and then there are people who have allowed fat back into their cooking, on a limited level. “It’s not uncommon to run into cooks who are no longer afraid, but are only using two types of fat in their kitchen, because someone told them that was the only way to eat.” It turns out, there’s a lot more to the story about fat, and a host of other reasons to let our relationship with it mature and deepen.

demonstration site for effective organic farming in western NC. Living Web conducts
year-round education in farming, homesteading, cooking, and sustainable living. All
education conducted at the farm is archived online in a free video library, and all food
produced at the farm is donated to charity, via seven North Carolina food banks. For

The 30th anniversary season of Downtown After 5, presented by Prestige Subaru, kicks off Friday, May 18 from 5-9pm. Downtown After 5 takes place the 3rd Friday of the month May – September and is held on North Lexington Avenue. Events are free and open to the public.
On Friday, July 20th, the Asheville Comedy Community comes together to raise funds for the family of the late local comedian Michael Roach. The benefit will feature Asheville’s best comedians with shows at 7:00PM and 9:30PM
