Pranom Pop-up-Just Passing through
Oct 22 @ 4:00 pm – 7:30 pm
District Wine Bar

We have your Monday dinner planned. Our good friend Dream Kasestatad of Pranom Pop-up will be passing through Asheville on his nationwide tour bringing with him his authentic Thai street food. What’s on the menu? His famous boat noodle soup, just in time for the cooler weather.

Dream has been busy since we last saw him. He was just in Clarksdale, MS cooking for the Deep Blues Festival. While he was there he was filming his feature documentary about the Williams family. The Williams family performed at Ground Zero, Morgan Freeman’s blues club and restaurant. Both the Williams family and Dream were invited back to take over Ground Zero in April. After his short stop here in Asheville he will be heading to New Orleans for the annual voodoo festival. While in New Orleans he will film segments of a new horror film he is directing then back to his hometown in Austin to start filming a new travel/good pilot starring Amy Paffrath, former host of VH1, fox’s Dating Naked and now current host of ESPN, Drone Races and E Entertainment.

The traveling concept has humble roots. Kasestatad is the product of four generations of Thai restaurateurs, the catalyst behind his deep love of family and community. “Food is love in our family,” Kasestatad says. His culinary-centric upbringing and love for traditional Thai food preparation led him to Los Angeles, where he prepared pad Thai from his apartment and offered bicycle delivery to friends, bars and small businesses. From there, he began hosting Thai street food pop ups, eventually hitting the road to share his cuisine nationwide. Now, Kasestatad travels the nation, stopping in foodie hubs like New Orleans and Charleston. “I love traveling,” he says. “I love meeting and connecting with people.” He also loves exposing communities across the country to authentic Thai food. For Kasestatad, taking his cuisine on the road is as much about the people as it is about the food. His favorite part? “All the friends I have made all over the country,” he says. “It feels more like reconnecting with friends when I come to town than work.”

Hominies Monthly Meeting- New Location

Our Hominies Cluster Monthly Meeting will take place at the Buncombe County Sports Park this month, as the library will be holding early voting at that time.

If there’s good weather, we’ll meet at the picnic tables next to the bottom parking lot. Come through the main entrance, go down the hill to the bottom fields, and take the very first left into the first parking lot. You’ll see us at the tables in front of the soccer field.

If it is raining, we’ll meet under the picnic shelter next to the playground.

IMPORTANT: The park closes at 7pm so we will need to be out before they close the gates.

(Put on in conjunction with It’s Alive!: Frankenstein, 200 Years. An Artist Book + Print Exhibition On view through October 27 at Bookworks in West Asheville: www.ashevillebookworks.com)

About the film:
After a brutal crime leaves Grey Trace paralyzed and his wife dead, a genius inventor and wunderkind offers him a chance to get his life back with STEM, a state-of-the-art implant that not only helps him walk again, but also gives him superhuman strength that motivates him to start looking for his attackers. What happens when the line between humans and our technologies blur? Find out in this splashily gory science fiction-horror film with a good dose of B-movie fun, which takes cues from David Cronenberg, Black Mirror, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and, of course, Frankenstein. From the producer of Get Out and the writer of Saw and Insidious. (Yes, it’s violent. And also fun. Because Halloween.)

About Ali:
Ali McGhee received her PhD in Romantic literature from the University of Rochester in 2015, where she wrote about 19th-century disease theory, slave narratives, and Frankenstein. She taught classes on Romantic literature, science fiction, and horror at U of R, UNC Asheville, and Warren Wilson College. She currently works as a Multimedia Producer for AVLtoday and is an editor for Holler. She loves talking about weird horror and SF films to anyone who will listen.

Oh Sees plus Escape-Ism

The Orange Peel

Oh Sees
plus ESCAPE-ISM
Show: 9pm
Doors: 8pm
$20 advance
$22 day of show
Ages 18+

Tickets & Info: www.theorangepeel.net/events/oh-sees/

Psych-punk psychic warrior, ear worm-farmer, and possessor of many stamped passport pages John Dwyer does not let up. His group Oh Sees (aka Thee Oh Sees, OCS, The Oh Sees, etc) have transmogrified to fit many a moment – from hushed druggy folk to groovy demonic pop chants to science fictional krautrock expanse and beyond – to suit his omnivorous whims. It’s common knowledge however, that at their shows, you’re there asking for a beating. 20 years going and the shows keep getting more and more intense, as many a soupy swarm can attest. The locked-in Rincon/Quattrone drum cops propel masses of strangers to froth and lean into each other as the insistent and repetitive underpinning tumbles nimbly from Tim Hellman’s bass. Meanwhile John ricochets breathy yips and snippets of synth and all manner of guitar heroics around your brain canyons while your reptile instincts yell “move”. Brain-stem body rock meets cerebral expanses, and their now du jour prolifically feeds a labyrinthine garden of well-hewn tunes.

Last year’s Orc was a muscular and darkly inventive turn for the group, stretching out further into space while simultaneously sharpening their heaviest inclinations to a rusty point. After a re-visitation of the softer side of the genesis of the group with “Memory of a Cut Off Head”, all signs point to another banger on the horizon as the group decamps this March back to the dusty pecan farm where Orc was spawned for another go-round.

Styrofoam Turtles, 20 Watt Tombstone & The Maness Bros.
Oct 22 @ 9:00 pm – Oct 23 @ 12:00 am
Sly Grog Lounge

The Maness Brothers; David (Guitar/Vocals) and brother Jake (drums/vocals) call St. Louis home. The crumbling brick, nightly gunshots, and a sour taste of civil unrest lurk in the background of the duo’s doom laden blues rock. Sludge, stoner, dirty, punk, rock are all acceptable words of description.
Yes by god they are real brothers!
The pair has toured the better half of Europe and the United States, paying homage & paying dues to the legends of Hill Country Blues, and the deepest roots of the rock and roll genre.
Their gritty sound continues to reverberate worldwide as the band continues touring; averaging 100 + shows per year. From a sold out performance in Warsaw, Poland to a pop-up show at Junior’s Juke Joint #2 in Holly, Springs, MS. There is certainly no stopping short for The Maness Brothers.
https://themanessbrothers.bandcamp.com/

20 Watt Tombstone (Tom Jordan-Guitar/Vocals and drummer Mitch Ostrowski) call the raging river country and dense woodlands of Northcentral Wisconsin home. An odd place for this strange breed of band, who share similarities with blues flavored artists such as The White Stripes, The Black Keys and Left Lane Cruiser; mixed with a tinge of Stoner Rock like Clutch and Electric Wizard.
The pair’s signature style has been dubbed “Death Blues” and the moniker fits. It’s a mix of raw, unadulterated rock and roll mixed with the influence of hill country blues by the likes of Junior Kimbrough and R.L Burnside, then throw in some Motorhead for good measure.
20 Watt continues to tour and stay on the road as much as possible, averaging 150 shows per year; playing everywhere from dive bars in Wisconsin to the Hard Rock Cafe in Atlanta. They continuously add to the 20+ states they have played to date and proudly add to their fan base of all ages, with every show

Eliada’s Annual Corn Maze
Oct 22 @ 9:29 pm

This year, Eliada will maintain some beloved attractions including the tractor ride, which now drives all the way around the Corn Maze, jumping pillow, corn kernel sand box, spider web climber, tube slides, and corn cannons.

Eliada is pleased to announce that the corn planted in the field is Non-GMO, and that Eliada used all natural fertilizers to help the corn grow.
The Corn Maze raises $100,000 for the agency every year, and we have come to rely on this event to support our programs,” says Davis-Bryant. “I never thought I’d have a job in which I relied on a field of corn growing! Changing up how we planted the corn field meant a lot to us, but was also a risk. I am proud of the agency for engaging in this kind of risk taking. The corn has grown beautifully, and we can be proud of the ways we have improved the event for the long-term sustainability of our land.
This year, Eliada is also adding beer and cider sales to the makeup of the event.

This option, available to guests only on weekends (Friday evenings, Saturdays and Sunday afternoons), will help the agency increase revenue to support the growing needs children and youth face in our community. Eliada is excited to work with local and national partners to provide an array of beer and cider options!

Reclaimed Creations
Oct 23 @ 8:00 am – 6:00 pm
NC Arboretum

Reclaimed Creations is a unique sculpture exhibit created by renowned artist Sayaka Ganz. Utilizing reclaimed plastic objects, such as discarded utensils, Ganz creates amazing sculptures that visually appear unified at a distance, but are in fact separated when examined up close. Described as using a “3D impressionistic” style, Ganz’s exhibit includes installations of animals in motion, which are in rich in color and energy, to create an illusion of form.

About the Artist

Born in Yokohama, Japan, Sayaka Ganz grew up living in Japan, Brazil and Hong Kong. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Indiana University, Bloomington, and a Master of Fine Arts degree in sculpture from Bowling Green State University in Ohio. A lecturer and teacher, Ganz’s work has been displayed at various institutions around the globe, including the Hermann Geiger Foundation in Cecina, Italy, the Isle Gallery in Isle of Man, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium in California.

My work is about perceiving harmony, even in situations that appear chaotic from the inside. When observing my sculptures up close, one might see gaps, holes and items being held on only by small points; step away, however, and the sculptures reveal the harmony created when the objects are aligned to the same general (but not identical) direction. Similarly, it is important to gain perspective by stepping back from current problems and look at the larger picture. Then one can perceive the beauty and patterns that exist.”

A Sense of Place: Interpretations by Kari Morton and Lauren Rutten
Oct 23 @ 10:00 am – 4:00 pm
Flow Gallery

Show runs through November 7
Hours: Tuesday through Saturday, 10am – 4pm

This beautiful exhibit celebrates the works of photographer Lauren Rutten and quilter Kari Morton. What these two artists share in common are a partnership in the five-woman, artist-owned Flow Gallery in historic downtown Marshall, and a deep love of Madison County, their newly chosen home.

In 2015, Lauren and her husband Andy, traveled the US for one year searching for a home. “From the very moment I arrived in Marshall while on this journey, I had a sense of having dreamt of this place since childhood – I knew this was where I wanted to be.

I have found that my life here is not confined within four walls, so I’m very interested in reflections, when the light shines through a structure, or a barn begins to dilapidate so the outside and inside merge.

Marshall finds itself in a season of change. Many families who are moving here to homestead live alongside families who have farmed here for generations. This collection hopes to show the range of those who have come to call Marshall home, as well as the hard reality of homesteading and its immense beauty, which are in direct relationship with each other here. In this land I dig my hands in the earth and muddy my feet on the ground, while at the same time experiencing the transcendence of being and connecting to so much beyond my body. I hope those who view these photos might experience this too.”

Kari and her husband, Mike, moved to Madison County in 2012, after having lived a fairly nomadic life. They decided Madison County was the place to put down roots and call home.

“This collection is inspired by my immediate world, the things I live with and the things I see – the garden in my front yard, the chickens in the back yard, the buildings in downtown Marshall, where I spend many hours working at Flow and serving as a guardian ad litem in the county courthouse. Each of my pieces tell a story of connection, to my community, to my world. I love sharing this part of myself with others.”

Flow Gallery is located on Main Street in the historic, picturesque town of Marshall, which lies along the French Broad River, just 25 minutes north of Asheville, NC. The gallery is in its 8th year of business and showcases the work of over 65 talented, regional artists.

In Times of Seismic Sorrows
Oct 23 @ 10:00 am – 6:00 pm
Center for Craft

When reflecting on the current state of the environment, it seems that we have entered into times of seismic sorrows. Carbon emissions, water pollution, fracking, and changing climate patterns all point to a troubling reality with serious consequences for human and non-human populations. Through weavings, installations, sculpture, and print, artists Rena Detrixhe and Tali Weinberg (Tulsa, OK) explore the complex relationship between humans and the planet, offering insights, expressing grief, and creating space for resilience and change.

In Time of Seismic Sorrows is curated by Marilyn Zapf and organized by the Center for Craft. The Center for Craft is supported in part by the N.C. Arts Council, a division of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.

12th Annual Lynn Boggess Exhibition At The Haen Gallery
Oct 23 @ 12:00 pm – 6:00 pm
The Haen Gallery

The Haen Gallery, located in downtown Asheville, North Carolina, is proud to present their 12th Annual Lynn Boggess Exhibition. The exhibit will run through November.

Lynn Boggess is one of the most unique and noteworthy American landscape painters of the 21st Century. He resides in West Virginia, a state whose diverse mountains, forests, and rivers provide abundant inspiration for the artist’s plein air paintings. In place of brushes he uses palette knives and trowels to thickly layer the broad sweeping strokes and exquisite fine detail that capture all the colors of the seasons in rushing rivers, snow covered hillsides, and thick forest vegetation. Mr. Boggess’ work is recognized internationally for its incredible three-dimensional texture, rendered solely in oils. These remarkable paintings combine elements of Abstract Expressionism and Photorealism to create a style that is totally unique and original.

The Haen Gallery in Asheville is located at 52 Biltmore Avenue between City Bakery and Chestnut. There is a parking garage at the Aloft hotel across the street, another garage just up the hill, as well as street parking.

The gallery is open Monday through Saturday 11am-6pm & Sunday 12-5pm. For more information: 828-254-8577 or www.thehaengallery.com. Gallery contacts: Chris Foley, Director; Leslie Logemann, Gallery Manager.

With locations in Asheville and Brevard, The Haen Gallery offers the work of established artists whose distinctive and unique style sets it apart from ordinary and imitative efforts. Visit the website at thehaengallery.com.
