Reduce agricultural methane? Let’s “hop” to it!

Join us for Second Sundays on zoom! We will be hosting Dr. Langdon Martin of Warren Wilson College. Log onto zoom, using the link in the sidebar, at 6pm EST on November 8th, 2020.

Hops are a key contributor to the flavors and aromas in beer. Some of the same molecules that contribute to the bitter taste in beer, the hop acids, are biologically active with interesting antimicrobial properties. Many of these molecules wind up in the spent yeast byproduct that forms during the beer-making process.

Spent craft yeast, which is protein-rich, has potential to be repurposed as a feed supplement for ruminants such as cattle. I will present results from initial in vitro studies that investigate this possibility. When bovine rumen fluid is incubated with spent craft yeast, methane production is inhibited, and the inhibition is comparable to that achieved with the commercial antimicrobial Monensin. Ongoing investigations involve how the methane-production process is affected by different concentrations of hop acids. This effect has the potential to improve agricultural feed efficiency and to reduce anthropogenic methane.

Langdon J. Martin, Ph.D. is a Professor of Chemistry at Warren Wilson College, where he teaches General and Organic Chemistry. His research interests include looking for environmentally beneficial uses for waste products.

Edible and Native Plants of WNC: Green Built Alliance 2020 Workshop Series
Nov 17 @ 2:30 pm – 4:30 pm
Online

This course introduces the concept of edible and native plants for landscaping. Participants will be introduced to more than 40 edible and attractive landscaping plants, many of which are native. All of these plants either feed people, feed wildlife, build soil, and/or feed other plants while remaining an attractive addition to the landscape. They will learn how to work with clients and specific sites to meet the needs of the residents and the plants.

Participants will leave the class with a better understanding of what plants are available for edible and native landscaping. They should feel confident in incorporating at least a few edible and/or native plants into a landscape on future projects and how to communicate the benefits of these plants to their clients.

This course has been approved as a two-hour elective course eligible for continuing-education credit through the North Carolina Licensing Board for General Contractors, and is eligible for Learning Units through the American Institute of Architects. It may also meet continuing-education criteria for other organizations; please email [email protected] with questions related to qualifying for continuing education.

Southside Garden Thanksgiving Celebration Seeking Volunteers
Nov 24 @ 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Arthur R Edington Education & Career Center
We will be celebrating and sharing pre-packaged food prioritizing Southside Public Housing Residents, doing garden activities, and hosting a socially distanced art show. If you would like to support the garden you are invited to volunteer or donate at this link: https://www.paypal.com/donate?hosted_button_id=8UM7X4DPJAQQL
We are looking for Volunteers to help support a community celebration and fundraiser for the Southside Community Garden. The event will be on Tuesday November 24th from 2-5pm at the Edington Center and in the Southside Community Garden located directly behind the center.
Volunteers are needed in advance of the event on Sunday Nov. 22 1:30-4:30pm to pass out flyers in the neighborhood alerting community members and sharing details. We will need 6-8 volunteers to attend a training with some historical information about the neighborhood and best practices. The training will be at the Edington Center on Nov. 22nd beginning at 1:30. The flyering will begin immediately after the training with volunteers going to different segments of the Southside community.
Volunteers will also be needed on the day of the event to help pass out pre-packaged food at a curbside pick up and hot cider in the garden, and to assist with set up and clean up.
Please fill out this form if you would like to volunteer or respond to this email if you would like more information. https://docs.google.com/…/1FAIpQLSe7fIHM8ds…/viewform…
This is a celebration and also a fundraiser for the Southside Garden which is located in a historically Black neighborhood that is under threat of gentrification. This neighborhood is technically a food desert, and even though it is close to Mission Hospital, residents have a high percentage of negative health outcomes. The goal of the garden is to create pathways to health and economic sustainability. Donations will fund programs for neighborhood residents in garden maintenance and stipends for staffing, as well as educational programming for youth in the garden. If you are not able to volunteer at the event, but would like to donate please follow this link:
