Music enthusiasts of all ages are in for a treat as The Grey Eagle and Worthwhile Sounds join forces to bring a sensational pairing: BJ & BJ (Billy Jonas & BJ Leiderman) to Grey Eagle Music Hall on Sunday, August 20. The doors will open at 7:00 PM, and the show will begin at 7:30 PM. Additionally there’s a 4pm back-to-school “family show” with the Billy Jonas Band, bidding farewell to Sherman Hoover, The BJB bassist for 14 years.

Billy Jonas, an acclaimed performer, singer-songwriter, composer, multi-instrumentalist, and educator creates a soul-spelunking, heart healing, and joy-filled journey. With his captivating blend of voice, guitar, and “industrial re-percussion” (found, foraged, and homemade instruments), Jonas inspires audience participation and invites an atmosphere of ecstatic connectedness.

BJ Leiderman shares the evening stage, and is the award-winning composer, renowned for his unforgettable theme music on Public Radio. With his debut album “BJ,” BJ Leiderman will serenade the crowd with original songs and cherished cover tunes. His crowd-pleasing medley of beloved Public Radio themes promises to delight listeners of all ages.

Registered voters who do not have an acceptable identification card for voting in Buncombe County can now go to the Buncombe County Board of Elections office at 59 Woodfin Place to get a free ID.

Most voters have a North Carolina driver’s license, which is an acceptable form of photo ID for voting. Those voters do not need to obtain a separate ID from their county board. Other common forms of acceptable ID include military or Veterans ID cards issued by the federal government, and college student and public employer ID cards that the State Board approved for use in voting. For a full list of acceptable forms of photo ID for voting, see the State Board’s website at Voter ID.

Registered voters who do not have an acceptable form of identification for voting purposes can now get a free photo ID from their county board of elections office. No special documents are needed. Voters will simply provide their name, date of birth, and the last four digits of their Social Security number, and have their photo taken. You may also register to vote at that time if needed.

Voters will be able to get an ID printed and given to them on the spot. A free voter photo ID will include the voter’s photo, name, and registration number. They will expire 10 years from the date of issuance. ID cards can be issued at any time during regular business hours, except for the period following the last day of early voting through Election Day.

“Any voter who does not have an acceptable ID card for voting can now get a free ID from their county board of elections,” said Karen Brinson Bell, executive director of the State Board of Elections. “State Board staff has worked diligently with the county boards of elections over the past couple of months to get the necessary software and hardware in place for ID printing.”

Voters also can get a free ID from the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles (NCDMV). Find more information under “No-Fee ID Cards” at State IDs | NCDMV.

Background on the Voter Photo ID Requirement

Voters will be asked to show photo ID when voting in North Carolina, starting with the Town of Weaverville, Town of Woodfin, and Woodfin Water & Sewer District municipal elections this fall.

All voters will be able to vote with or without an ID. If a voter casting a ballot at the voting site does not provide an acceptable ID, the voter may fill out a Photo ID Exception Form and vote a provisional ballot, or vote a provisional ballot and bring an acceptable ID to the county board of elections office by the day before the county canvass (which is typically 10 days after elections in even-numbered years and seven days after elections in odd-numbered years).

Voters who vote by mail will be asked to include a photocopy of an ID with their ballot or complete a Photo ID Exception Form for Absentee Voting. The photocopy will be mailed in a special envelope to protect the voter’s personal information on their ID.

The Skyland UMC congregation has entered into a partnership with Manna Food Bank to provide monthly food distribution at two locations, our Skyland UMC Campus and Sweeten Creek mobile home park. ArtsAVL announces its first Town Hall of 2023-24, which will focus on the current state and possible futures of Thomas Wolfe Auditorium. The panel and discussion will be held on Monday, August 21 from 3-4:40 p.m. at Harrah’s Cherokee Center Asheville. The event is free and open to the public (registration required). Mounting maintenance needs at Thomas Wolfe Auditorium have forced the City to reduce the venue’s operating capacity, resulting in major revenue losses and questions about the future of the performing arts in Asheville and Buncombe County. The Town Hall will convene a panel of speakers to share their insight and perspective on the space. Confirmed panelists so far are Mayor Esther Manheimer; Chris Corl, Director of Community and Regional Entertainment Facilities for the City of Asheville; Daniel Crupi, Executive Director of the Asheville Symphony; and Vic Isley, President and CEO of Explore Asheville and the Buncombe County Tourism Development Authority. A Q&A following the panel will explore creative solutions to the crises faced by the performing arts center. Attendees are invited to submit questions in advance for the panelists here. Town Hall attendees are also invited to take a tour of Thomas Wolfe with Corl and the facility’s Assistant General Manager. Interested in solving climate change? You are welcome in Citizens’ Climate Lobby (CCL). Since 2014 our Western North Carolina chapter has been working together to get climate laws passed. We believe that the only way to tackle climate change is together. We connect over shared concerns, build consensus, and work with elected officials from every party towards climate solutions.

Together, we make a much bigger impact than we could individually by:

• Starting productive conversations about climate solutions in our community
• Getting more people talking about solutions
• Building support for climate action with community leaders
• Meeting with our members of Congress to advocate for effective climate solutions

As a Chapter we have secured over 150 business endorsements in WNC of the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act and currently our main focus is on getting cities and counties throughout WNC on board with Climate/Resiliency/Sustainability Action Plans. We welcome you to attend our monthly meetings every 3rd Monday of the month from 6:30-8:30pm virtually on Zoom – details are on our Facebook page and will be emailed to you.

With multiple parks featuring ballfields and volleyball, pickleball, tennis, and basketball courts, Asheville has plenty of opportunities to join pick-up games or play with organized sports leagues. Asheville Parks & Recreation (APR) offers a broad line-up of youth athletics programs, adult sports leagues, and special events throughout the year with an emphasis on fair play and enjoyment for any level of experience, including the fall opportunities below.

Asheville’s newest team sports league provides an opportunity for community members over 40 who want to get back into the game or prefer to play with others around the same age. Sign up as an individual to be placed on a team based on height, position, and skill level for games played at Linwood Crump Shiloh Community Center.

Flag Football League, $600 per team

Registration opens August 30, games begin October 17

Upper, middle, and lower divisions play at Asheville Middle School on 211 South French Broad Avenue.

Winter Basketball League, $600 per team

Registration opens October 10, games begin November 27

Upper and lower divisions play at Linwood Crump Shiloh Community Center. Middle division plays at Stephens-Lee Community Center.

Tennis Clinic, $20 per player

Registration ends September 6, clinics held each Tuesday and Thursday from September 12-21

Instructional clinics for beginners and intermediate players teach the basics and build on skills each class at Murphy-Oakley Park.

Doubles Grass Volleyball Tournament, $20 per team

Registration ends September 5, tournament on September 16

Six sets to 21 in pool play for advance and intermediate divisions in which all teams advance to the playoffs on a day of music, fun, and volleyball at Carrier Park.

Intro to Golf, $10 for series with players responsible for their own green fees

Registration ends September 28, games played each Wednesday from October 4-25

Pumpkin Ball Softball Bash Tournament, $150 per team

Would you like to be a mentor? Mission’s Parent Mentor Orientation Training is for parents who
understand the unique experience of raising a child with a disability, mental health challenge, or special
healthcare need. Since 1985, Mission Children’s Hospital Family Support Network (FSN) has connected
parents to volunteer parents who are uniquely qualified to help because of shared experiences. At our
upcoming Parent Mentor Orientation Training, parents are trained to offer support in meaningful ways
for families undergoing a new diagnosis, transition, or crisis. This training offers volunteer parents the
tools they need to support others and become an official FSN Parent Mentor. Training is being offered
three times: Tuesday, August 22 from 5:30pm-8pm; Wednesday, September 13 from 10 am to 12:30pm
and Monday, September 18 from noon to 2:30pm. All sessions will be at Mission Children’s at 11

Great news for poets and poetry lovers: Dark City Poet’s Society is returning to the Black Mountain Library. DCPS is a completely free poetry group that is open to poets of all ages and experience levels.
