The Holidays have never felt so magical! Santa will board THE POLAR EXPRESS™, greeting each child and presenting them with a special gift as in the story, their own silver sleigh bell. Christmas carols will be sung as they return back to the Bryson City Depot.

This Christmas season at the Vance Birthplace we will once again partner with the American Myth Center to present one of the greatest Christmas stories ever told, Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, but with Zebulon Vance smack dab in the middle. The ghosts of Christmas past, present, and future will lead Zebulon in an exploration of the life of Venus, an enslaved woman that live on the Vance property. Visitors will go on an extraordinary and illuminating journey through the entire site, from the Birthplace to the 1790s slave dwelling.

The American Myth Center is a non-profit organization in Asheville whose mission is to create new American Myths to serve as familiar points of reference in the urgent, yet enduring, investigation of our home. For more information visit www.americanmythcenter.org.

This is a ticketed event. Tours will run every 30 minutes starting at 5:30 pm with the last tour at 8:00 pm. Adults: $5.00, 18-and-under: $2.00, 5-and-under: free. Shadrack’s Christmas Wonderland presented by Ingles
Tryon Resort is thrilled to be the newest location on the Shadrack’s Christmas Wonderland circuit. This two-mile journey weaves through hundreds of thousands of animated Christmas lights coordinated to music for an estimated 30 minutes of holiday enchantment. The Wonderland also features giant, custom-built displays of Santa and his pals on vacation in the mountains, hang gliding, rock climbing, ice fishing, lounging around the campfire, and more. This playful portion of the show is sure to please everyone, young to old.

The tour finishes in Tryon Resort’s Winterfest Village filled with more fun for the whole family. The tour is $25 per carload with additional pricing for group vans and buses available. Tickets are available online in advance or at the exhibit entrance, and discount tickets are available at any Ingles location. Tours are self-driven and open from 6pm-10pm seven days a week beginning November 15, 2019 and ending on January 5, 2020.

Experience Asheville’s BRIGHTEST holiday tradition at Winter Lights at The North Carolina Arboretum. Open nightly November 22, 2019 – January 4, 2020, from 6 to 10 p.m. Walk through an outdoor winter wonderland and see the Arboretum’s gardens and landscapes dressed in more than half-a-million holiday lights. Available on Thursdays through Saturdays only, this special ticketed event offers visitors the chance to enjoy a holly, jolly ride from downtown Asheville or Biltmore Village to Winter Lights courtesy of The Trolley Company. Upon arrival, guests will receive a complimentary cup of hot chocolate and access to the Winter Lights. Johnny Gandelsman performs Bach’s complete cello suites. 

Grammy award-winning violinist and producer Johnny Gandelsman brings his new project to BMCM+AC, presenting Bach’s complete cello suites on the violin. A founding member of Brooklyn Rider and a member of the Silkroad Ensemble, Johnny has recently collaborated with Tyondai Braxton, Bela Fleck, Nico Muhly, Yo-Yo Ma, Caroline Shaw, and Mark Morris.

Johnny Gandelsman is the one of the first to record or perform Bach’s complete cello suites on violin. This is Gandelsman’s second initiative towards adapting Bach’s compositions to violin, following his recordings of Bach’s Sonatas and Partitas in 2018. Having worked with incredible masters of various world music traditions, like Bela Fleck, Martin Hayes and Kayhan Kalhor, Gandelsman’s playing of the Suites is equally inspired by folk and fiddling traditions, as it is by historically informed performance.

In these compositions, Bach captured every human emotion imaginable, making the compositions truly universal. These works are known and beloved all over the world, thanks to legendary recordings and performances by giants like Pablo Casals, Anner Bylsma and Yo-Yo Ma.
