Reclaimed Creations is a unique sculpture exhibit created by renowned artist Sayaka Ganz. Utilizing reclaimed plastic objects, such as discarded utensils, Ganz creates amazing sculptures that visually appear unified at a distance, but are in fact separated when examined up close. Described as using a “3D impressionistic” style, Ganz’s exhibit includes installations of animals in motion, which are in rich in color and energy, to create an illusion of form.
About the Artist
Born in Yokohama, Japan, Sayaka Ganz grew up living in Japan, Brazil and Hong Kong. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Indiana University, Bloomington, and a Master of Fine Arts degree in sculpture from Bowling Green State University in Ohio. A lecturer and teacher, Ganz’s work has been displayed at various institutions around the globe, including the Hermann Geiger Foundation in Cecina, Italy, the Isle Gallery in Isle of Man, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium in California.
My work is about perceiving harmony, even in situations that appear chaotic from the inside. When observing my sculptures up close, one might see gaps, holes and items being held on only by small points; step away, however, and the sculptures reveal the harmony created when the objects are aligned to the same general (but not identical) direction. Similarly, it is important to gain perspective by stepping back from current problems and look at the larger picture. Then one can perceive the beauty and patterns that exist.”
Learn proper alignment, improve strength & flexibility, & enjoy deep, guided relaxation with Lynn Edgar, an experienced yoga therapist at the 500hr level.
Contact the Mills River Library at 890-1850 for more information.
Each Tuesday and Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m., April through October, trained volunteer guides lead small groups of participants along woodland trails and through a variety of forest types. Depending on the season, topics of discussion include wildflowers, plant and tree identification, natural history, and the cultural and land use history of The North Carolina Arboretum. Guides may include areas such as the Natural Garden Trail and Bent Creek.
Programs are held rain or shine and participants should dress appropriately for the weather. Individuals should also wear sturdy shoes and bring water. Walks last 1.5- 2.5 hours, depending upon the interest of the group, and are approximately one to two miles in length. Due to length and content, this program is not recommended for children under 8 years of age.
Walks begin in the Baker Exhibit Center Lobby and space is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Groups of five or more are required to pre-register by calling 828-665-2492. Walks are FREE, however, donations to The North Carolina Arboretum Society are appreciated. Regular parking fees apply. Arboretum Society Members always park free.
Due to size limitations of the tours, groups of 10 or more are required to book a private guided trail tour.

MUSIC
The Gravy-House Storytellers presents mouth-watering musical marmalade from the 1920’s through the 1940’s. ‘The Gravyhouse Storytellers’ is a small-combo swing ensemble from Asheville, NC. The storytellers perform authentic arrangements of Pre-WWII-era Blues Shoutin’ and Swing tunes. Their repertoire favors ‘mid-tempo blues’ and is appropriate for Lindy, Balboa, and East/West coast alike.
BLUES
Band finished and you’re not done dancing? You’re in luck… stick around for our vintage blues hour! Continue dancing to DJ’d music until the bar kicks us out. $2 suggested donation for those coming just for the blues hour.
FOOD: Feeling peckish? The bar has a small selection of vegan goodies to help keep your stamina up! Ask a bartender for more details.
CLASSES
7pm: Continuing Class: Intermediate Partner Charleston w/ Sparrow & Jean
We will be working on side by side variations for the first two weeks, tandem entrances, exits, and variations for weeks 3 and 4, and for the 5th week of October we will be doing a special class on switching and stealing- super useful for jams and social dancing!
“Continuing” classes are for those dancers who have cemented the basics of the dance being featured that specific month. This includes knowing (and being able to execute cleanly and consistently) basic footwork and lead/follow skills for that dance. Some continuing classes may require no advance knowledge of a dance. This will be noted in the the class description.
*******************
8 pm: Core Class: Intro to 8-count Lindy Hop w/ Sparrow & Keith
Learn the foundations of the 8 count Lindy Hop, the high energy dance from Harlem that swept the nation and then the globe. Starting from the very beginning, breaking down the steps and rhythms in easy to understand ways, Keith and Sparrow will get ya on the dance floor and having fun in no time. No partner required and drop in friendly, though of course you’ll learn the most if you start at the beginning of the month and stay till the end!
“Core” lessons stress the fundamentals of swing dancing for beginning dancers. Lessons rotate monthly to focus on a different kind of swing dance (6 Count Lindy, 8 Count Lindy, Charleston, Balboa, etc.). Because good fundamentals are hard to develop in one month, we recommend repeating Core lessons (on the same topic) to help develop the solid foundation you’ll need in continuing classes. Core lessons are also great for intermediate and advanced dancers who want to “get back to basics” or learn a different dancing role (lead vs. follow).

GIFT CERTIFICATES
Do you want to buy a gift certificate for our classes as a gift, or to pre-pay for a block of classes for yourself? You can purchase gift certificates at the door at our weekly dance! They are $40 for a block of 4, and a great way to dive into the fun world of dance.

arolina Resource Center for Eating Disorders is proud to host Dr. Linda Bacon for Nurturing Body Respect: The Facts, Fictions, and Clinical Path, an evidence-based alternative to weight-focused care.
Dieting is often a precursor to disordered eating (ie: body image, food, and exercise concerns/behaviors). Disordered eating, for individuals with the genetic and biological predisposition, is frequently a precursor to eating disorders. Switching the focus from dieting to nourishment and improving body esteem offers an inclusive, harm-free alternative. In her provocative workshop, Dr. Bacon will challenge the assumptions of a health agenda based on thinness as a goal and dietary control as the answer.
“Health care practitioners are at a challenging crossroad,” says Bacon. “Many are noticing that despite all the attention to weight, patients aren’t getting thinner, and are aware of the well-established finding that only a small percentage of people maintain weight loss over the long run. Discomfort with these conversations sets up a divide between clinicians and clients and leads clients to fear and avoid health care. In this workshop, we’ll reconcile those challenges. Participants will gain confidence to address weight concerns more effectively and empower individuals – of all sizes – to live healthier lives.”
