DAVID LAMOTTE
Feb 11 @ 8:00 pm
White Horse Black Mountain

David LaMotte is an award-winning songwriter, speaker and writer. He has performed over 3000 concerts and released thirteen full-length CDs of primarily original music, touring in all of the fifty states, as well as five of the seven continents. The Boston Globe writes that his music “pushes the envelope with challenging lyrics and unusual tunings, but he also pays homage to folk tradition,” while BBC Radio Belfast lauds his “charm, stories, humour, insightful songs, sweet voice and dazzling guitar ability.” His most recent album, Still, features the number one song on Folk Radio in September, 2022 (September Me), and the the album remained in the top twenty for six months.

His dense speaking and workshop calendar has included presenting at the PC(USA) Mission to the United Nations, keynoting peace conferences in India, Australia, Germany and at the Scottish Parliament, as well as offering the baccalaureate for 2016 graduates of Columbia Seminary. His TEDx talk on what music can teach us about peacemaking is featured on TED.org

LaMotte suspended his music career for two years, beginning in 2008, to pursue his other primary vocation by accepting a Rotary World Peace Fellowship to study International Relations, Peace and Conflict Resolution at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia. As part of that study, he also spent time in rural Andhra Pradesh, India working with a Gandhian development organization.

“David LaMotte is a very good partner in this important work, both for our world and for the human soul.”

~ Richard Rohr, Center for Action and Contemplation

David has published three books, including two illustrated children’s books. The first based on his award-winning children’s song SS Bathtub and the second, White Flour, is based on the true story of a creative, effective, and whimsical response to a Ku Klux Klan march in Knoxville, Tennessee by a group called the Coup Clutz Clowns. His most recent book, Worldchanging 101: Challenging the Myth of Powerlessness, has been used as a textbook in universities across the United States and in Australia. That book will be reissued in 2023 in a new edition by Chalice Press, under the new title of You Are Changing the World Whether You Like It Or Not.

walkingIn 2004, David and his wife Deanna founded PEG Partners, a non-profit organization that supports mentoring, education, and artistic expression in Guatemala. He is also a consultant on Peace and Justice for the North Carolina Council of Churches, and served as Clerk the AFSC Nobel Peace Prize Nominating Task Group.

As a touring artist with an over thirty-year career, LaMotte has developed a large and loyal following around the world. His music has been honored with numerous awards and artist grants, and has been featured on dozens of artist compilations. Notably, his song Dark and Deep was included on Songs Inspired By Literature, Chapter One, a benefit CD to raise money for adult literacy. Other artists on that CD include Suzanne Vega, Grace Slick, Aimee Mann and Bruce Springsteen. Several independent films feature David’s music, and it has been heard on the Today Show and the Showtime television series This American Life.

Asheville Truffle Experience: Truffle Demo + Tasting
Feb 12 @ 10:00 am – 12:00 pm
Timbers Clubhouse

The Asheville Truffle Experience will rock the mountains from Friday through Sunday, February 10th through 12th, 2023, with multiple mouth-watering sessions in beautiful downtown Asheville and environs.  Guests will plunge into the mystery of this ultra-prized ingredient, of which many species exist—traditionally hailing from the deep, dark woods of France, Italy and Spain, but now also cultivated across the States, particularly in the northwest and southeast.

The event will kick off at 5:00pm on Friday the 10th, in the upstairs lounge of Michel Baudouin’s Bouchon (Lexington Avenue), with truffled appetizers and sparkling beverages, and a chance to mingle and share stories with other truffle aficionados.

At 8:00pm there will be a showing of The Truffle Hunters, in the intimate setting of Warner Studios, just a short walk down from Bouchon, on Broadway.

Saturday morning the 12th will begin with a culinary demo, from 10:00am-12:00 noon, at the Timbers Clubhouse, off Beaverdam Road, followed by a tasting of dishes prepared.

An educational session, for those who wish to learn more about all aspects of truffles, from the planting to the varieties to the harvesting and highlighting on the plate, will be held from 3:00-5:00pm at Warner Studios on Broadway, and will feature experts in the field of truffle history, cultivation, hunting, and cuisine. From 5:00-6:00pm, light appetizers will be served, along with a chance to ask questions of the experts.

On Saturday evening, guests will be delighted with a selection of provocative dishes during a special seated wine-paired Truffle Extravaganza, orchestrated by Chef Michel Baudouin, at RendezVous, off New Haw Creek Road.

On Sunday the 12th we will head out to the truffle orchard at the Mountain Research Station in Waynesville, overseen by Dr. Jeanine Davis. There we will witness a truffle dog in action, observe the various stages of a truffle orchard in production, and sample some truffle snacks before departing.

Making Our Future: Visionary Folklore and Everyday Culture in Appalachia
Drawing from her work as state folklorist, Emily Hilliard explores contemporary folklife in West Virginia and challenges the common perception of both folklore and Appalachian culture as static, antiquated forms, offering instead the concept of “visionary folklore” as a future-focused, materialist, and collaborative approach to cultural work.

With chapters on the expressive culture of the West Virginia teachers’ strike, the cultural significance of the West Virginia hot dog, the tradition of independent pro wrestling in Appalachia, the practice of nonprofessional women songwriters, the collective counternarrative of a multiracial coal camp community, the invisible landscape of writer Breece D’J Pancake’s hometown, the foodways of an Appalachian Swiss community, the postapocalyptic vision presented in the video game Fallout 76, and more, the book centers the collective nature of folklife and examines the role of the public folklorist in collaborative engagements with communities and culture. Hilliard argues that folklore is a unifying concept that puts diverse cultural forms in conversation, as well as a framework that helps us reckon with the past, understand the present, and collectively shape the future.

Emily Hilliard is a folklorist and writer based in central Appalachia. She is the former West Virginia state folklorist and the founding director of the West Virginia Folklife Program. Find more of her work at emilyehilliard.com.

Erica Abrams Locklear is a professor of English and the Thomas Howerton Distinguished Professor of Humanities at the University of North Carolina Asheville. She is the author of Appalachia on the Table: Representing Mountain Food and People (forthcoming April, 2023 from University of Georgia Press) and Negotiating a Perilous Empowerment: Appalachian Women’s Literacies (Ohio University Press). She is a seventh-generation Western North Carolinian who loves good food, books, and conversation.

ROBIN BULLOCK
Feb 13 @ 7:30 pm
White Horse Black Mountain

CAROLINA CELTIC, is a monthly concert series which showcases Irish and Scottish musical traditions and often explores their commonality with the Appalachian ballads and stories of the Carolina mountains..

Tonight’s show will be a solo concert by series host, ROBIN BULLOCK.

Hailed as a “Celtic guitar god” by Baltimore City Paper and “one of the best folk instrumentalists in the business” by Sing Out! Magazine, Robin Bullock is one of the preeminent acoustic music masters of our time.

His virtuosity on guitar, cittern and mandolin blends the ancient melodies of the Celtic lands, their vigorous American descendants, and the masterworks of the Baroque and Renaissance eras into one powerful musical vision. The 17th-century harp tunes of legendary Irish bard Turlough O’Carolan, the spirited jigs and reels of rural Ireland, the haunting ballads of the southern Appalachians and the timeless compositions of Bach, Dowland and Francesco da Milano all find a musical common ground in Robin’s music, where lightning-fast fingerwork one moment is perfectly balanced with tender, quiet intimacy the next. A warm, friendly presence onstage, Robin effortlessly creates a magical world for the audience with his multi-instrumental wizardry, taking them on an unforgettable journey into the deep heart’s core and through the music of the spheres.

When you stray from a trail and strike out into the woods, you are bushwhacking. The term implies a physical thrashing about–pushing past branches, slicing through thickets, leaping across downed trees–but it also implies a certain fortitude and resilience to seek places unknown. In Bushwhacking, Jennifer McGaha borrows the term, likening it to what writers do when faced with the equally daunting blank page. Exploring the wilderness of your inner life means leaving a relatively comfortable place and going where no path exists. Writers face similar, unknown obstacles when forging a route to a final draft. Part writing memoir, part nature memoir, and part meditation on a life well lived, Bushwhacking draws on McGaha’s experiences running, hiking, biking, paddling, and getting lost across the Appalachian Mountains of western North Carolina to offer readers encouragement and practical suggestions to accompany them on their writing and life journeys. Each essay links one of McGaha’s forays into the wilderness to an insight about the creative process. An almost-failed attempt at zip lining becomes a lesson on getting out of one’s comfort zone. The thrum of a hummingbird’s wings, an autumn sunset, and a hound dog’s bay at a bear on the path are impromptu master classes in finding inspiration in the small, the ordinary, and the unexpected. With humility, humor, and hard-won wisdom, Bushwhacking honors writing craft traditions and offers fresh insights into how close communion with nature can transform your writing and your life.

Jennifer McGaha has taught creative nonfiction and memoir writing in various settings for more than twenty years and currently coordinates UNC Asheville’s Great Smokies Writing Program. She is the author of the critically acclaimed memoir Flat Broke with Two Goats, and her work has appeared in the Huffington Post, the Bitter Southerner, Brevity, CHEAP POP, Lumina, PANK, the Chronicle of Higher Education, Passengers, HerStry, and elsewhere. A native of Appalachia, McGaha lives in western North Carolina with her husband, two cats, six unruly dogs, ten relatively tame dairy goats, and an ever-changing number of hens.

Bev MacDowell
A hike and backpack guide for the Carolina Mountain Club and Blue Ridge Hiking Company. She’s led children and adults on trail adventures for more than 15 years. She is an Appalachian Trail Maintainer for the Max Patch section and is attached to the CMC Friday Maintenance Crew. She has completed Educator Outward Bound, 28 Miles in a day Make a Wish Hike, several CMC Challenges and 200 miles of the Spanish Camino del Santiago. The bulk of this was accomplished post 50 years old. She is grateful to be able to hike, help others do the same and to live in these gorgeous old mountains.
