Pioneer Women Painters of the River District
Aug 17 all-day
NC

Pioneer Women Painters of the River District, curated by Sara Ledonne, is a group exhibit which will highlight five Warehouse Studio artists from the mid 90s. These adventurous, creative, inspirational women found themselves under one roof, painting energetic, extraordinary, thought provoking abstracts.
In the 80’s, Marie Hudson opened her studio in the RAD. She was one of the first artists to plant roots in what has become one of the most popular locations for artists in Asheville. Hudson’s art resonates in the community. Hundreds of locals have collected her art over the years.
Mary Charles Griffin, an abstract expressionist artist that goes by the name of Charlie, is a 91-year-old dynamo who graduated from Western Carolina University with her master’s in studio painting when she was 77. “I started painting professionally after my children left home in 1980. I can’t hear, see or speak, but otherwise I am in pretty good shape for my age.” -Charlie Griffin
“I moved again to a studio in the Riverlink building in 1991. With the leadership of Karen Cragnolian ( Riverlink) and Gayle McCarthy (Highwater Clay) I helped organize the first, soon to be River Arts District, Open Studios. There were five participating artists at that time.” – Betty Clark
“This building, these studios, these women were my first introduction to the artists of Asheville and the River District. It was not yet called the River ARTS District…there were no coffee shops, breweries, or restaurants  like today…It was still pretty sketchy after dark if you ventured further down toward what is now Pink Dog… I moved into Warehouse Studios in the fall of 1998, right after I moved to Asheville from Seattle.   At that time, there were only about 20 artists in the RAD, scattered in the old buildings.  Marie Hudson, Betty Clark , Charlie Griffin and I had been working studios at Warehouse long before there was anything else down there. We became friends as well as critics for each other’s work.”- Barbara Fisher
This exhibit aims to recreate the experience of discovering this artistic hot bed, and pay homage to those early Asheville pioneer women painters. The opening reception for Pioneer Women Painters of the River District will be August 3, 2018 from 5:00 – 8:00 pm.  Sara Ledonne will give a curator’s talk at 6:30.
Participating artists: Betty Clark, Marie Hudson, Mary Charles “Charlie” Griffin, Barbara Fisher, Dawn Rentz

Youth Rally for the Forest
Aug 17 @ 9:30 am – 11:00 am

This fall, the Forest Service is completing a 30-year plan that will decide how much of the forest is cut and how much is protected. Young people will be most affected by this 30-year plan, but their voices have not been included so far. Our children will be inheriting the forest and the decisions made this year.

On FRIDAY, AUGUST 17 at 9:30 a.m. at the Forest Service headquarters in Asheville, the supervisor of the U.S. Forest Service in North Carolina has agreed to meet with a group of youth. Before the meeting, kids will participate in a rally at the Forest Service headquarters, and then they will get to talk directly with the Forest Supervisor. The kids’ rally and meeting will be covered by several news outlets.

You and/or your child do not need to know anything about forests or forest planning; all they need is a love of being outdoors.

We hope to encourage the Forest Service to protect Pisgah’s trails, waterfalls, old-growth forests, wildlife and endangered species, clean air, clean water, and scenic views.

We will have signs, t-shirts, and stickers available for free for all kids and grownups. You are certainly welcome and encouraged to make any other signs or stickers.

This is a critical moment for the future of our forests and our region’s health, and our kids could truly have an immense impact on the outcome of this forest plan.

Truth Decay New England IPA Can Release
Aug 17 @ 12:00 pm – 10:00 pm
Highland Brewing Company

The classical ideals of truth have eroded under the weight of centuries of contradiction. The duality of “what is” and “what is not” can no longer substantiate our beliefs of truth. The uncertainty of quantum physics bleeds into our lives as we find facts inadequate to explain our modern being. Thus, we turn inward to the self and find that subjectivity is truth and it is infinite.

Truth Decay, a New England DIPA, releases on August 17th in limited edition cans featuring the awe-inspiring art of Maxx Hawthorn-feist. With utmost certainty, we can say that this is not a beer to miss out on.

Hailing from Memphis, Southern Avenue is also the name of a fiery young Memphis quintet that embodies soul, blues and gospel traditions, while adding a youthful spirit and dynamic energy all their own. Southern Avenue features five young but seasoned musicians who came from diverse musical and personal backgrounds to create music that spans their wide-ranging musical interests, while showcasing the powerful chemistry that the group has honed through stage and studio experience.

Opener: The Fritz
The Fritz is a soul-driven dance rock band with an aggressive approach to funk, soul and rock creates a sound that is uniquely their own. Their high-energy, danceable songs provide a platform for each member to shine. With powerful vocals, climactic solos and tight grooves, The Fritz has built a devoted following and is captivating audiences everywhere.

Coming September 21, hip hop legends The Pharcyde and local opener Free the Optimus.

Each summer the Asheville Downtown Association partners with five local nonprofits to sell wristbands at the event. Each group received a grant of $2000. The ADA has given more than $150,000 to area nonprofits through this program. 2018 partners include: Asheville Youth Villages (May), Girls on the Run (June), Big Brothers Big Sisters (July) and Guardian Ad Litem of Buncombe County (August) and Asheville Museum of Science (September).

Lots of local beers on tap including: Pisgah Brewing, Sierra Nevada, Hi-Wire Brewing, Asheville Brewing Company, Catawba Brewing, French Broad Brewing, Green Man Brewery and Bold Rock Cider, as well as beers from Western North Carolina and regional and national brands.
