‘Moving with Makers:’ an NC Dance Festival Workshop for Area Students
Sep 29 @ 1:30 pm – 4:00 pm
Asheville School

Join Asheville School for a dance technique and repertory workshop with NC Dance Festival Touring Artists Kristen Taylor Duncan and Megan Mazarick. Open to students in 8th – 12th grade.
The NC Dance Festival is an annual festival produced by the Dance Project that aims to support the creation of new choreography and the presentation of high-quality repertory, build and strengthen relationships between dance artists within North Carolina and provide access to and education about modern and contemporary dance to audiences and students. The festival presents work by some of the best modern dance choreographers in the state. This year, the festival has performances in Asheville, Durham, Charlotte and Greensboro.

In conjunction with the NC Dance Festival Asheville performances, the Asheville School Fine Arts Program will host “Moving with Makers,” a dance technique and repertory workshop featuring two NC Dance Festival artists on Saturday, September 29, from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. for area students in eighth through twelfth grades. The workshop will take place in the Walker Arts Center’s Graham Theater on Asheville School’s campus.

Students are invited to join NC Dance Festival artists Kristin Taylor Duncan and Megan Mazarick for an afternoon of movement. Students will have the opportunity to participate in a technique class and learn selected repertory while gathering insight into the artists’ choreographic approaches.

This class pairs with the NC Dance Festival’s opening show, which will take place at the BeBe Theater in Asheville on Friday, September 28. The show will feature the work of four NC Dance Festival artists, including Duncan and Mazarick. By pairing the workshop with the evening performances, students will gain a deeper perspective into the world of working artists.

For more information or to sign up for “Moving with Makers,” contact Asheville School Chair of Fine Arts Kathy Leiner at [email protected] or 828-215-2410. Workshop tickets are $5 or free with the purchase of tickets to the NC Dance Festival in Asheville: Bebe Theater.

A 4-piece combo of journeymen musicians, they take their varied influences and form them into a JanglePop juggernaut. Hard to pin down their sound, they’ve heard comparisons from The Beatles to The Pixies to early REM to Elvis Costello to The Kinks. Catchy songs, vocal harmonies and just the right amount of edge make these guys a fun night whether they’re playing originals or quirky covers.

“Local Packs and Troops raise funds to provide support for Scouts in their service area,” said Committee Chairman Dan Little. “Funds are typically used to provide assistance for Scouts from economically challenged communities by sending scouts to summer camp, provide scouting handbooks, uniforms, “Boys Life” magazine and payment for the national Boy Scouts Of America annual recharter fee and purchase flags for our veterans’ graves.”

On Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day Cub Scout and Boy Scout Troop 17 honor our deceased veterans at Bethel United Methodist Cemetery by placing flags on their graves.

Boy Scouts Serving Others: Since 1910, over 4,000 young men in Western North Carolina have earned the coveted rank of Eagle Scout. Through their Eagle Scout service projects, thousands of community service hours have been conducted to benefit our communities. In addition, other Scouts from local Packs, Troops and Crews also perform thousands of additional service hours on an annual basis. Scouts in Western North Carolina performed over 40,000 hours of community service in 2016.

About the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts: The Cub Scouts program is for boys in first grade through fifth grade. Boy Scouts is a program for boys 11 to 18. Both programs are designed to develop character, citizenship, and fitness. Through the advancement program and peer group leadership scouting helps a boy develop into a well-rounded young man. The Eagle Scout Award, the highest rank in scouting, is recognized around the world as a mark of excellence.

In Boy Scouts, individual members take responsibility for the activities of the troop. By planning and organizing activities, they develop teamwork and learn to lead as well as follow.

Ambrose West Courtyard Series: Chuck Lichtenberger
Sep 29 @ 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm
Ambrose West

Free live music in the courtyard EVERY Friday and Saturday evening! Bring a picnic, bring your friends and family, and grab a drink at the bar while you watch some of WNC’s finest perform on the patio.

Gates open at 5:00pm. Music starts at 5:30.

Chuck Lichtenberger is a musical iceberg. At first listen, it is easy to note that his formal education in Jazz and music theory have trained his hands and ears. But underneath the surface, Lichtenberger is so much more than just a highly skilled piano player.

Years of studying music and performing with some true pioneers of the Western North Carolina art scene have seasoned Chuck with a dynamic array of skills and passions. While Jazz music will always be one of his great loves, one might be surprised to find Chuck shifting between metal, rock and pop on any given day. His diverse sonic interests are evident in his original compositions, and provide for a multi-layered listening experience that is both uniquely complex and universally compelling.

After a fifteen year stretch playing keyboard for nationally acclaimed band, Stephaniesid, the three piece group laid the project to rest. One final performance in Asheville, North Carolina’s prestigious Diana Wortham Theatre marked the end of an era. As the musicians parted ways, each began a new journey, but Lichtenberger’s mind had been on a trip of its own, since long before the band’s dismantle.

Having dealt with anxiety since a child, Chuck is all too familiar with the dark corners of his subconscious. Right now, he is learning to be open, honest with himself, and to take things day by day. His pilgrimage toward healing is at the center of his new album, “This is What Happens When…”

Songs of his childhood, trauma, and battles with mental health could easily make this record too heavy, and at times uncomfortable to hear. But Lichtenberger’s refreshing arrangements and humorous undertones provide the perfect contrast to the poignant lyrical material. Although the album could be simply classified under the genre of rock, elements of old-school hip hop are woven throughout, making this project a truly new Chuck Lichtenberger endeavor. Produced by renowned multi-instrumentalist and long time friend, Jonathan Scales, and recorded between his home studio and Echo Mountain in downtown Asheville, this album has a powerhouse team of engineers and advisors beneath it. But it is the experience of Lichtenberger, the depths of his story, and the unending hope to seek peace within that make this record so worthy of hearing.

Chuck Lichtenberger is a pianist, composer and teacher. But most importantly, he is a human that is simply learning how to be. And it is this honest confession of not knowing that sets him so far from the rest.

“This is What Happens When” is available now.

An Intimate Evening, with Brie Capone, Matt Townsend and CaroMia
Sep 29 @ 6:30 pm – 10:00 pm
The Asheville Masonic Temple

“An Intimate Evening” at the Asheville Masonic Temple is to showcase the natural talent and songwriting abilities of three of Asheville’s most original artists.

Inside the historic Masonic Temple Theatre; Brie Capone, Matt Townsend, and CaroMia will be performing handmade songs against the backdrop of hundred year old handmade scenery with their works reimagined for the ethereal temple space.

Brie Capone is a singer/songwriter and performer from Asheville, NC. With belting female lead vocals and heartfelt, introspective lyricism and unforgettable melodies. Brie headed back home to Asheville, NC in 2016. There she wrote and recorded her solo EP “Orbit”, at Echo Mountain Studios in downtown Asheville released in 2016. She recently released her newest EP “If I Let You In”, which she recently promoted out West with two acoustic tours in CA, NM, AZ, TN.

Matt Townsend is a singer and songwriter based in Asheville, NC. Drawing on influences of Folk, Americana, 60’s rock and pop, Indie rock, and ambient music, and his newest release “The Drifter and the Dream (Part I)” is “folk-rock story telling at it’s finest”. With an eye on the inner and outer worlds and where they meet, “Townsend explores the modern world and all of its rough edges”.

The biography of CaroMia Tiller reads like an adventure novel, action-packed and thrilling. From a very young age this spirit has been making her own rules about what is and is not possible. The undeniable soul-shaking power behind her voice seems to draw on a few lifetimes’ worth of experience. From a world of inspiration CaroMia distills an arresting and immediately recognizable sound: her own signature blend of Americana, Soul and R&B.
