Warm up those paws, and dust off that fur! At the Enka-Candler Library we’re digging into the mind-blowing world of Mammals! We’ll have a free educational program with the North Carolina Arboretum to learn all about the mammals that call Western North Carolina their home.Come ready to hear about the ecoEXPLORE program, discover some new mammal facts, and get an up-close encounter with animal artifacts, like tracks, scat, and fur samples.

Learn how to rock out to your favorite songs on the drums! There will be a 30 minute, once-a-week private lesson where you’ll start with the basics and work your way up to playing along to your favorite songs. Pre-registration required and lessons are filled on a first-come-first-serve basis.

In this class designed for beginners and younger performers, students will learn basic acting techniques and have a great time doing so! They’ll get creative with short scenes and play drama games that teach key skills in a fun and approachable way. This class builds the confidence to help them to shine on stage and in life –  even in their next audition or school play! Students will perform a showcase for family and friends during the last class.

Registration begins on Wednesday, September 14, 2022 at 10:00 am. Tuition will be $225 – Scholarships are available.

We are seeking volunteers to assist us in our small after school program for children in West Asheville in low-income housing.  We provide a safe and nourishing environment, healthy snacks, and creative activities.  Our program currently meets during the school year on most Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 3:00-5:00pm. You may volunteer for one or two days a week. 

Volunteer Responsibilities:

• Assist with serving snacks
• Interact with children during activity time
• Supervise games and outdoor free time
• For people with background in education, there is also an opportunity to assist with curriculum development and program planning and administration

Requirements:

• Background check
• Orientation booklets will be provided
• Masks are required if unvaccinated

Learn to be a triple threat in this musical performance class! Students will work with acting, music, and dance professionals to stage songs from some of our favorite Broadway musicals. Get ready for the spotlight – students perform in a cabaret style showcase at the end of the class!

Are you looking for a way to develop your Spanish language skills or a way to keep your skills fresh? Join this friendly and welcoming Spanish Language Practice Group organized by Pack Library. Newcomers are always welcome on the first Thursday of each month at 5 p.m. This group meets online and is focused on providing an intermediate level, immersive discussion experience. This event is free, but you do need to register. This online group is open to everyone, regardless of whether you think you are a writer or not. I will be giving the group writing prompts, and then we will spend 10 to 15 minutes writing as fast as possible without editing. After that, you will have the opportunity to share what you wrote or not; it’s completely up to you. This practice sparks great creativity, and you might discover new things about yourself and exciting possibilities for your writing outside of the group. It’s also a wonderful way to connect to other creatives and build community.

***Trigger Warning: I do not believe in censoring anyone’s writing or self-expression. Sometimes people write on subjects such as sexuality, substances, abuse, etc. Other times we write about more mundane things, like your favorite kind of coffee. With this type of writing, you just never know. If you feel that certain topics will be too triggering for you, you might want to consider joining this group. Or you can just lower the volume if the writing is triggering! And of course, if you write something sensitive, you never have to read it out loud to the group.

Kids have great imaginations – this is the place to let it loose! Our youngest students will learn to bring fun stories and characters to life. Through games and play, they’ll get comfortable expressing with their voices and bodies. And, their confidence will grow as they perform with other kids! Join us for play and creativity!

TFAC invites all artists: painters, sculptors, writers, performers & more — to a casual weekly drop-in gathering on Saturday mornings at 9 AM to share your works in progress, alert others, and chat about art and what’s happening in your community. The first weekly Coffee is Saturday, August 20 at 9 am. No RSVP needed, just drop by! Free parking available on Melrose Avenue, behind and alongside TFAC.

Pace: 1.5mph – because I’m an ol’ Codger.
Difficulty: Well established Tr. No water Xings.
Optional Climb to Stone Mtn is 600 ft ascent in 1 mile.
