About Asheville Government: 12:30 – 1:30 pm
Presented by David Forbes of the Asheville Blade – https://ashevilleblade.com/

“Local government is incredibly important, shaping everything from housing to equity to safety. Asheville’s is no exception and in a changing time like this, it’s more key than ever. But it’s often hard for locals to know where to start or understand how to get involved. The Asheville Blade, our city’s reader-backed news source, has you covered.”

In this handy session, Asheville Blade editor David Forbes, who’s covered City Hall for over a decade, will present a rundown of how local government works, what some major current issues are, answer questions and lay out some of the most effective ways for locals to get involved.

How to Hold the City Accountable: 2:00 – 3:00 pm

A panel discussion of local community members, activists, and grassroots organizers who share their experiences, stories, and strategies attempting to hold elected representatives and city staff accountable to stated goals and purpose. Panelists include Dee Williams (NAACP Criminal Justice Reform), Patrick Conant (Code for Asheville), Matilda Bliss (ASURJ), Sabrah N’hraven (Code for Asheville, Transit Committee), and Olufemi Lewis (Community Activist)

Participatory Budgeting: 3:30- 4:30
Presented by Kim Roney & Friends

“Participatory budgeting (PB) is a different way to manage public money, and to engage people in government. It is a democratic process in which community members directly decide how to spend part of a public budget. It enables taxpayers to work with government to make the budget decisions that affect their lives.”

Kim Roney & Friends will present a brief history of Participatory Budgeting. Where it started, when it began, and how it has spread. Then, there will be a participatory walk-through of the process, discussing neighborhood assemblies, the proposal process, the voting process, and implementation.

Community Bill of Rights: 5:00 – 6:00
Presented by Kat Houghton of Community Roots

The Community Bill of Rights is paradigm shifting local level legislation that asserts our rights for local self-governance over those of for-profit corporations. It is a crucial step in building sustainable communities. The Community Bill of Rights has been passed in 200 communities in the US, we are working to make Asheville and Buncombe County next.
