Registration:  This is the 40th Year Anniversary for this event! We have transitioned to a LOTTERY system. Interested runners should enter the lottery in the two week period August 1st at 12:00 am EST and August 14th at 12:00 am EST.
It does not matter when you enter, as long as it is within this two-week period. All prospective entrants will be required to use Ultra signup to enter the lottery. There will be NO in-store entries.
Priority will be given to previous winners, those who have completed the race the last five years consecutively, eight or more times cumulatively, and previous race volunteers, then by date of entry receipt some consideration will be given to first-time applicants.

This is a 17.8-mile trail race conducted over the historic Shut-In Ridge Trail that begins at Bent Creek near Asheville, NC and climbs over 5,000 feet along the ridgeline of the Blue Ridge Parkway to the Mt. Pisgah parking lot. The race will begin at 10:00 AM on Saturday, November 2th, 2019 at the North Carolina Arboretum’s Visitor Education Center. Enter from Highway 191 at the entrance ramp for the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Awards/Post-Race Celebration:
Post-Race Celebration will take place at 7:00 pm at the Wedge Foundation, located at 5 Foundry St., Asheville, NC 28801

Asheville Pizza & Brewing Company’s 2nd Annual Video Contest where we create a contest for local filmmakers with three Jury Award cash prizes is now open to submissions.
The 2019 contest is to create a fake movie trailer that is between 30-60 seconds in length.
Also, just like our 2018 contest we are giving all qualifying entries a $25 Asheville Brewing Co. gift card that is good to use at any of our three locations.  No other contest actually pays filmmakers to enter.
After 20+ years of giving WNC great pizza, beer and movies we are thrilled to provide this annual contest supporting the filmmakers of the future.
Here are some bullet points of the contest details:
  • Length of the fake movie trailers must be between 30-60 seconds.
  • The fake movie trailers can be any of any genre, but must follow the rules and content guidelines to qualify (link below). Please stress this.
  • It is open to all ages, and any resident of Western North Carolina.
  • Submissions are now open and the deadline to submit a video is Sunday, November 10th at 11:59pm.
  • Qualifying entries will be shared on our Facebook/Instagram pages and also will play in our pre-show entertainment before movies at our Merrimon movie theater.
  • JURY AWARDS = $300 for 1st Place / $150 for 2nd Place / $100 for 3rd Place
  • PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARDS = We’ll post all of the qualifying videos to both our Facebook and Instagram pages, and let the public vote on their favorites. The winners receive Asheville Brewing Co. gift cards.

Christmas at Biltmore adds a touch of Downton Abbey

Known for its monumental scale of traditional holiday décor and dazzling lights, this year Biltmore’s annual Christmas at Biltmore celebration will offer even more than ever before.

 

A yuletide feast for the senses, Christmas at Biltmore begins Nov. 1, 2019. One week later, on Nov. 8, the estate will welcome Downton Abbey: The Exhibition, an immersive experience that celebrates the global hit television series and new feature film.

Biltmore House aglow with five dozen Christmas trees

Biltmore House interiors will shine with the sparkle of more than 50 hand-decorated Christmas trees, ribbons and garlands measured by the mile, and thousands of lights. A majestic 35-foot Fraser fir in the Banquet Hall is the home’s holiday centerpiece. For the first time, hand-decorated Christmas trees will be displayed on the balcony that wraps around the home’s two-story Library.

 

Candlelight Christmas Evenings

During Candlelight Christmas Evenings, candlelight, firelight, and live music will create a magical environment that elevates seasonal celebrations inside Biltmore House. A 55-foot Norway Spruce on the home’s front lawn lit with 55,000 lights will greet guests as they arrive to enter Biltmore House.

 

The warm welcome continues at Antler Hill Village & Winery with a constellation of holiday lights leading to the Winery and estate restaurants. A towering tree of lights will illuminate the Village Green, with a sea of lighted grapevine spheres nestled in the landscaping. Lights cascading from the trees that surround the bonfire area near Antler Hill Barn will offer a unique touch to the experience.

 

Downton Abbey: The Exhibition

Downton Abbey: The Exhibition will feature interactive elements that connect fans to their favorite characters, fashions, locations, and historic events of the era. Showcased in two estate locations, the exhibition pairs seamlessly with the real-life story of the Vanderbilt family at Biltmore. Amherst at Deerpark will host multimedia presentations and some of the series’ most recognizable sets—including Mrs. Patmore’s hectic kitchen and the gossip-fueled servants’ quarters. At The Biltmore Legacy in Antler Hill Village, a gallery of more than 50 costumes from the series will be on view.

The exhibition will run through April 7, 2020. Access to Downton Abbey: The Exhibition is included with daytime admission, Candlelight Christmas Evenings admission, or an overnight stay that includes daytime admission.

One reality of food banking is that food banks commonly receive holiday-specific food donations after a holiday has already occurred, making it difficult for food banks to provide these food items in a timely way to our neighbors seeking food assistance. We want families across our 16 counties to be able to celebrate the holiday with the rest of the community, and with that hope in mind, we are looking for the community to step up and help us eliminate one more worry for families about how they will fill their own holiday tables.
Donate a Turkey for the Holidays
When you are out shopping, we encourage you to pick up an extra frozen turkey to donate to MANNA! We know that hunger is a daily worry for tens of thousands of people across our region, and something as simple as a holiday turkey can truly give the gift of happiness and hope to people living through the daily experience of food insecurity.

Foster Parent Training Classes Announced for 2020

You might have heard about the need to recruit more foster parents in Buncombe County. “We currently have 300 kids in foster care in Buncombe County,” says Heather Hill-Pavone, Buncombe County Licensing Social Worker. “Only some of those kids get to stay in Buncombe County as we only have 100 licensed foster homes with BCHHS.” We need your help to let people in our community know about the upcoming Foster Parent Training Classes happening in 2020!

These courses begin the licensure process for becoming a foster parent. They are offered quarterly, for anyone in Buncombe County, who is interested in becoming a foster parent. While the next round of Foster Parent Training Classes starts on September 11, the classes for 2020 are NOW on the calendar! You can sign up by clicking this link.

The Asheville Marathon & Half at Biltmore Estate Sign Up Now

The Asheville Marathon began 8 years ago with only a marathon option, which sold out quickly in its first year, and again the next year. A nationwide interest in half marathons was becoming popular, so for the 3rd year a half marathon option was added.  In the 4th year, the event expanded to two days of races and a half marathon on each day.  To add a twist in the 5th year the Backyard to Vineyard Challenge was created, where participants race in the Saturday half and Sunday full. The challenge was very popular and for the 6th anniversary, Backyard to Backyard Challenge was added, where participants run both the Saturday half and the Sunday half. Now in its 8th year both days of races, including the challenges, are expected to be sold out, with 3,100 participants.

The Asheville Marathon & Half at Biltmore Estate is held on and run entirely on the grounds of the Biltmore Estate, where runners will wind through paved and packed dirt roads to see hardwood forest, meadows, gardens, and extraordinary views of the Biltmore House and Estate. This is the original Asheville Marathon and first race of its kind to come to Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina; don’t miss out on being part of history at Biltmore Estate.

Slayer’s Final World Tour began on May 10, 2018 with the band’s intention to play as many places as possible, to make it easy for the fans to see one last Slayer show and say goodbye. By the time the 18-month trek wraps on November 30, the band will have completed seven tour legs plus a series of one- off major summer festivals, performing more than 140 shows in 30-countries and 40 U.S. states.

Slayer’s Final World Tour has been a wild ride. Three bus drivers, four truck drivers, and a crew of 32 have traveled all over the world to set the stage for this farewell. At most shows, Slayer’s pyro expert set off 160 pounds of propane and 10 liters of 99% isopropyl alcohol, prompting the Phoe– nix New Times reviewer to comment on the “eyebrow-singe- ing pyrotechnics that could be felt even 10 rows behind the pit.” In Toronto, one diehard fan was ejected from the concert before Slayer took the stage, so jumped into Lake Ontario (that surrounds the Budweiser Arena) and swam back to the venue. The Tampa Bay Times’ Jay Cridlin wrote, “ Beginning with the throttling opener ‘Repentless,’ Slayer tore through their set like a flaming cigarette boat across the river Styx, charring up a vicious circle pit by the stage,” and Detroit’s Gary Graff noted in his Oakland Press review the “10,000 headbangers who skipped the ‘Game of Thrones’ finale to pay homage to the pioneering quartet.” “The sheer physicality of their show was something to behold and was yet another indi- cation that while the band may be calling it a career, they are going out on top, playing at their absolute best,” wrote Andy Lindquist for the SF Sonic, and Guy D’Astolfo with the Youngtown Vindicator ended his review with this: “After the final note, Tom Araya stood alone, scanning the crowd…forg- ing a mental imprint of the moment. After a minute or two, he went to the microphone and said, ‘I’m going to miss you guys.’ Then he exited and the lights went up.”

The Tryon Downtown Development Association presents the 8th Annual Tryon Beer Fest! Tryon’s annual Oktoberfest-style event is Saturday, November 2, 2019 from 1pm ’til 6pm in the Tryon Depot Plaza. Regular tickets are $30 through August 31, 2019 (Early Bird), $35 from September 1, 2019 through November 1, 2019, and $40 at the gate (cash only). VIP Tickets are available this year offering access to a VIP area with snacks and exclusive beers, a hand-crafted tasting cup holder, and $15 credit for oysters or festival merchandise. Registration is now open for the next session of indoor youth tennis classes starting November 4th at Hendersonville Racquet Club.  Kids are put in groups based on age and ability with seven levels available.  The session is six weeks long and is $79 for members or $99 for non-members for one class a week.

“Our youth tennis program has something for any child who wants to play.  From beginner to high performance player, we put them into situations where they will be challenged and can succeed while having a fun time doing it.” stated HRC Owner Chris Bull.

The format for this session is having classes once a week for six weeks. There will be no classes the week of Thanksgiving. Then the session concludes with a fun play day where they can get match experience.  All classes are taught by certified tennis professionals and will be held on HRC’s indoor courts

Welcome to the inaugural Land and Sky Relay, debuting on Saturday, November 2, 2019. This four-person relay race will take teams on a sixty-four mile journey from Asheville to Cherokee, North Carolina through amazing valleys and up and down breathtaking ridges. Upon reaching the finish line, an amazing post-race party awaits you with food, beer and the chance to swap stories with your fellow competitors at Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Resort.

The Land and Sky Relay is unique in that teams are comprised of four runners rather than the usual six and twelve found at the larger relay events in the area. A team this size will be easier to form and can use a standard car or SUV to travel the route rather than a rental van, saving time and money. There are other things that make Lake and Sky unique as you will see below.

We hope you and your friends or co-workers will join us on this inaugural journey.

Qigong (alternatively spelled chi gung or chi kung) is a form of gentle exercise composed of movements that are repeated a number of times, often stretching the body, increasing fluid movement (blood, synovial and lymph) and building awareness of how the body moves through space.

The classes and the introduction to Qigong will be taught by Dr. John Akers.

Dr. Akers is a recently retired Wofford language professor and classical guitarist who has taught wellness classes at Wofford, the Spartanburg YMCA, and Zen Garden. Dr. Akers played and coached collegiate soccer, has practiced meditation over 40 years, and teaches a daily routine of yoga and core strengthening enhanced by Qigong energy play. Dr. Akers is also an avid golfer committed to carrying his own clubs, without a cart.

Join David Weintraub, Executive Director of the Center for Cultural Preservation and director of the film, “Guardians of our Troubled Waters,” for a discussion and exhibition of the film.

What if we could smell our local rivers long before we could see them? What if our legacy was dead streams, poisonous water and a dying ecosystem? This was the story of our community not very long ago. Mark Twain remarked that many of the rivers he observed were “too thin to plow but to thick to drink” and that describes the French Broad River, the Pigeon, the Swannanoa, the Mills and the Green and many other regional waterways.

Meet the River Heroes who said NO to the destruction of our Troubled Waters. People like Wilma Dykeman in WNC and East Tennessee, Marjory Stoneman Douglas in Florida, the Upper French Broad Defense Association in NC and the Dead Pigeon River Council in Tennessee.

Their passion, their activism and their call to save our waterways awoke our communities to the need for river stewardship. Their call still echoes today in the environmental efforts, land conservancies, river keepers, green businesses and engaged communities who are working to be the stewards nature is asking us to be.

Award-winning film director David Weintraub, will present his new film on the ordinary people who did extraordinary things to protect southern rivers and streams.

This film screening is presented by Conserving Carolina, Walnut Creek Preserve, and MountainTrue.

Food Truck Festivals of America is bringing the 3rd Annual Asheville Food Truck & Craft Beer Festival to Asheville Outlets on Saturday, Nov 2, in Asheville, NC from Noon-5pm (VIP hour 11am-Noon). There will also be music playing, lawn games to enjoy, and an artisan market where local artists will showcase their work.
