This event is a collaboration between the Asheville Chamber Music Series and the Asheville Art Museum to feature North Carolina musicians embarking on a major concert career to appear in a Rising Stars Series.
Christopher Tavernier made his orchestral debut with the Tar River Philharmonic Orchestra at the age of thirteen performing Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1. Since then, he was won numerous competitions throughout the Appalachian region including the Hendersonville, Asheville, Augusta, and Charlotte Symphony concerto competitions. In 2017 he was selected as one of the winners at Brevard Music Festival’s Jan and Beattie Wood Concerto Competition which included undergraduate and graduate competitors. In 2018 he placed 1st in the inaugural Hayes School of Music Piano Competition in Boone, NC, and placed 2nd place in the Big Arts Classic Music Competition in Sanibel, FL. Last year Christopher placed 1st in both the Lower College Level Piano and College Concerto divisions of the 6th Annual Gulf Coast Steinway Society Music Competitions in Mobile, and this year he received the distinct honor to perform at Carnegie Hall in NY.
Christopher is half of a chamber music duo going by the name of “88 Keys and a Reed,” a joint project with clarinetist Matthew Hannah to explore the vast variety of repertoire for piano and clarinet. In addition, Christopher has performed many benefit concerts in support of the Mission Foundation’s “Ladies Night Out” — a collaboration of women helping women who provide free mammograms and health screenings for uninsured/underinsured women.
Before entering college, Christopher studied with Dr. John Cobb and Dr. Douglas Weeks. Christopher is now beginning his Senior year and is completing his undergraduate degree in piano performance with Dr. Read Gainsford at Florida State University’s College of Music. This summer he will be attending the Gijon International Piano Festival in Gijon, Spain. Christopher has been featured on ABC affiliate television station WLOS, CBS affiliate WSPA in Spartanburg (Scene on 7), Carolinas CW62 (Studio 62), and Carolina Live NPR radio, and WCQS in Asheville, NC., and has published recordings in DVD and CD formats.

Marriage, birth, death, departure; for Dispatch’s Chadwick Stokes and Brad Corrigan, the only constant these past few years has been change. Add to that an exceedingly tense political climate, long-overdue reckonings on racial justice and gender equality, and a runaway global pandemic, and you’ve got an idea of what’s behind the band’s extraordinary new multi-part album. Marking Dispatch’s eighth studio release and first full-length collection without longtime member Pete Francis, the new album will arrive in a series of distinct phases, each consisting of three tracks inspired by the emotional stages of grief and transition. The songs here speak not only to the band’s personal evolution, but to human nature itself, charting a course from denial and resistance to growth and acceptance through deep introspection and empathetic character studies. Heady as that all may sound, the music is pure Dispatch, blending infectious roots rock with hints of reggae, folk, and blues, and the production is similarly lean and energetic, leaving plenty of space for some of the group’s most pointed, political lyrics to date. The result is a timely and essential album from a band still breaking new ground two-and-a-half decades into its storied career, an ode to resilience and survival that manages to find hope and joy on even the darkest of days.

O.A.R. might just be music’s biggest, best kept secret. The pla8num-cer8fied Rockville, MD band has quietly sold out Madison Square Garden twice, filled Red Rocks Amphitheater a dozen 8mes, earned pla8num and gold plaques, lit up the Times Square New Year’s Eve celebra8on, and built one of the most commiLed fanbases in the world. The group—Marc Roberge [lead vocals, guitar], Richard On [lead guitar, backing vocals], Chris Culos [drums], Benj Gershman [bass], and Jerry DePizzo [saxophone, guitar, backing vocals] accompanied by Mikel Paris [keys, backing vocals, percussion], and Jon Lampley [trumpet, backing vocals]—ring in 25 years together by strengthening this special bond with audiences everywhere.
The implica8ons of this secret have become downright mythic over the years since their first performance at a middle school talent show. Tens of thousands of hours later, they sold out Madison Square Garden for the first 8me in 2006 only to repeat this feat the next year. Along the way, two singles—“Love and Memories” and “Peace”—and the live album Any Time Now went gold as “ShaLered” achieved pla8num status. The 2011 anthem “Heaven” emerged as their most successful song on the West Coast. 2019’s The Mighty marked the group’s third consecu8ve Top 15 debut on the Billboard Top 200. Piquing the curiosity of media, they’ve incited think pieces by everyone from the New York Times to Sports Illustrated and performed on The Today Show, The Tonight Show, Live with Kelly and Ryan, and the Special Olympics Opening Ceremony, the ESPYS, and more. They did it all on their own terms.
Beyond indulging their own community, O.A.R. gives back as well. The band’s Heard The World Fund supports youth, educa8on, and the under-served in the United States, raising, and contribu8ng millions to benefit various schools, students, and organiza8ons. They established a scholarship at their alma mater, the Ohio State University, and provide scholarships to veterans and gold star families via Folds of Honor. The Concert For Dreams, performed at NYC’s famous Beacon Theater, raised north of $1 million for Garden of Dreams. Addi8onally, the band has gone to bat for causes, including Connor’s Cure, standing up to pediatric cancer, raising and dona8ng over $100,000.

Garrett “G. Love” Dutton is celebrating his 27th year as a touring and recording artist. With over 15 records released, G. Love has been an influence to artists such as Jack White, Jack Johnson, The Avett Brothers, Slightly Stoopid and many more. With his signature blend of Delta Blues, Hip Hop, Funk, Rock and Roll and Jazz, G has literally created his own funky stew of American music. Expect a high-energy mashup of funky vibes and songs written from the front porch to get the world smiling and dancing to the positive message of Love and the Blues.

Eleanor Underhill & Friends is an indie folk-rock band formed in 2014 in Asheville, NC. On the heels of a decade of touring with chart-topping American group, Underhill Rose, singer-songwriter and banjoist Eleanor Underhill was ready to sink her teeth into something more experimental. Drawing on the talents of an eclectic group of musicians from western North Carolina, Eleanor Underhill & Friends juxtaposes driving rhythms and whirling saxophones with eclectic open-back banjo riffs and soulful vocals. It’s a unique group that tips their hat to many traditions without being bound to any.
After years of encouragement by her fans, Underhill has finally recorded an album comprised of fan-favorite cover songs, aptly titled Got it Covered. Returning to her home studio, she began tracking in the pandemic winter of 2020. Bringing in regular members of ‘& Friends — Zack Page on bass, Silas Durocher on guitar, Jacob Rodriguez on saxophone, and Will Younts on kit — enabled Underhill to capture the magic that the group has cultivated over years of live shows. A whopping sixteen tracks are the result of a multi-year process that brings listeners from austere acoustic tracks to bombastic re-imagined renditions of some of the most beloved songs of all time.
Got it Covered puts Underhill’s influences on full display, from the song selection to the production choices, you can tell that Underhill’s tastes are far-reaching and timeless. The album drifts between dreamy nostalgia and modern lucidity with beautifully present upright bass, sandy synths, dreamy guitars, well-seasoned vocals, and unexpected looped beats. With lo-fi moments, epic orchestral swells, and modern ear candy sprinkled here and there, you can hear Underhill’s production skills advancing into new realms. As expected, Underhill presents us with her image-defining banjo that is woven through the songs with fresh perspective.
In Got it Covered, Underhill is at the top of her game. She has reimagined these songs into an intricate yet powerful soundscape that you’ll want to hear on repeat. It’s an album with plenty of soul, plenty of emotion, and lots of fun.
In 2021, Underhill was featured on the cover of CenterPiece Magazine highlighting a live performance at “Echo Sessions” filmed at Echo Mountain Recording Studios and broadcast statewide on the North Carolina Channel. Despite the chaos and reckoning of 2020, Underhill released a second album, Land of the Living, to positive reviews, premieres, and national radio airplay. American Songwriter premiered the kick-off track, “Didn’t We Have Fun?”, and Musoscribe called the album a “Best of 2020” release. Underhill also ambitiously crafted music videos for every single track and a full-album movie (available on her Youtube channel). While in the throes of the pandemic, Underhill decided to launch a Patreon page to allow fans to support her efforts in return for exclusive content.
Underhill’s first foray into home recording and self-production came in 2018 with the release of an all-original twelve song album: Navigate the Madness. She bunkered down in her parent’s old mill house and began tracking. The Asheville Citizen-Times called it “…a stunning work of a gifted, visionary singer-songwriter.” Mountain Xpress stated that “Eleanor Underhill confidently moves well beyond the confines of Americana. A rich tapestry of song and sound, ‘Navigate the Madness’ is a wholly successful creative adventure.”

Night Palace’s debut album Diving Rings is a shocking alchemy: aching nostalgia meets frothy anticipation of what’s beyond the garden wall. Tantalizing pop melodies take wing with lush instrumentation, weaving a reedy bed for songwriter Avery Draut’s shimmering vocals. It’s hard to believe the album is not a soundtrack to . . . something. You find yourself picturing it: a moonlit-gilded diorama of Draut’s dreams and memories.
Spanning eleven songs and interludes, Diving Rings ebbs and flows through tracks like “Enjoy the Moon!” dubbed by AllMusic, “a song that sounds like a lost Pet Sounds track played by Broadcast;” grounded indie-rock songs “Into the Wake, Mystified” and “Stranger Powers;” and the celeste-gilded folk song “Titania.”
Growing up, Draut would wake to her parents blasting Court and Spark or Nilsson Schmilsson, dancing around the living room, and riling the dogs. At school in Athens, Georgia she studied classical voice, singing in operas and recitals. After five years of fruitful and intensive opera performance, she found a Lowrey Magic Genie™ electric organ at the thrift store. Enchanted by its sound, she sat down for the first time to write songs of her own: the songs that would become Diving Rings.
Paste Magazine encapsulates the now Athens, Georgia and New York City-based act’s sound: “Diving Rings wraps freak-folk energy in a lush psych-pop package.” The album was released on April 1 via Park the Van.
Nearing twenty years in existence, Kenosha Kid, or K.Kid as it is occasionally stylized, is a musical group led by guitarist Dan Nettles. Based in the humid indie-rock haven of Athens, Georgia, Nettles leads a worldwide host of collaborators in a simple purpose: build a scene, write for people you know, and listen to your creative heart. Certainly the all-instrumental music has deep roots in jazz composition, but it is also fueled by an omnivorous musical appetite and as likely to reference Monk as Willie Nelson, Hendrix as Duke Ellington.
Starting with the release of Projector [2005], K. Kid has provided a steady string of remarkable content: a DVD/CD package featuring an all-new score for Buster Keaton’s silent film Steamboat Bill, Jr [2008], the vinyl release of Fahrenheit [2009], the creation of an extensive Bandcamp archive which houses over 40 live shows, the powerhouse twin sonic pillars Inside Voices [2015] and Outside Choices [2017], and Missing Pieces [2019] which features a striking two-guitar incarnation augmented by three-piece string section.
Now nearing completion, The October Book Parts One, Two and Three are the latest K. Kid offerings. Written across one month, the collection is an ambitious 3-LP set features 31 songs, over 20 musicians and a dreamlike abundance of musical sorcery.
A musician’s dream: you meet, write songs together, perform around the world, and eventually marry… your soulmate. Does this even really happen? Yes, yes it does, and you can hear it in the weave of every CICADA RHYTHM song. For the uninitiated, the Americana umbrella would certainly serve to shelter the Cicada family’s music, but upon further listen you will find a wealth of textures and harmonic twists set this music far above anyone’s expectations of the genre. To sweeten the deal, as singers and instrumentalists Andrea and Dave can stand alone or flow together as needed, and onstage you sense they often merge into a spine-tingling single unique voice that lifts you up. The duo shines in the group’s newest record Everywhere I Go, and songs like “American Open Roads” and “Kaleidoscope Rose” invite you to wander through wisteria-choked backyards, gaze at the stars from your front porch, and yes, even dream a dream of your own.

The Jukebox Jumpers is a local AVL blues & soul duo who celebrate and spread their passion for country blues and African American vernacular musical styles. Using piedmont and delta blues traditions as a launching pad, their performances expand into classic southern soul from Memphis, Muscle Shoals and New Orleans, as well as Chicago blues and early rock n’ roll. Additionally, they write original songs inspired by mining the those deep musical veins. Leas singer Parrish Ellis simultaneously plays guitar/bass parts while playing two drums with his feet. He is joined by either Steve Trismen on fiddle, or Jason Moore on saxophone, or both (as is the case for the G.E. patio show).
Within one set of music you will hear songs by such American musical icons as Ray Charles, Bo Diddley, Earl King, Al Green, Dr. John, James Brown, Charley Patton, Howlin Wolf, Otis Redding, Muddy Waters, Lee Dorsey, Sonny Boy Williamson, Mississippi John Hurt, Alvin Robinson, Slim Harpo, Junior Wells/Buddy Guy, Nina Simone, Robert Johnson and Little Walter. At the core of this carefully curated musical mix is the common thread of the high energy, funky good-time party and dance music that originally arose from barrel houses and juke joints in the American south during the 1920s through the 1960s.

We are shamelessly drumming up attention for our exciting new program at Lake Julian Park. Starting Thursday, March 31, Buncombe County Recreation Services is hosting a drum circle on the last Thursday of every month from 5:30-7:30 p.m. The only thing you need to bring is yourself and a drum, and then just let the rhythm and beautiful scenery do the work as you enjoy the beat and comradery of fellow percussionists.
All experience levels are welcome, and registration is not required. If you have any questions, please contact Park Ranger Zach Hickok at (828) 684-0376.
