There’s more than Chunky Monkey and New York Super Fudge Chunk in downtown Asheville’s Ben & Jerry’s this summer.
Art created by Vance Elementary School fifth grade students of art educator Robbie Lipe is now on display on the brick walls opposite the Ben & Jerry’s ice cream. The exhibit depicts the students’ interpretation of the artist Kehinde Wiley and the contemporary portraits he creates inspired by traditional Baroque paintings. It will be featured through the end of the summer.
“Ben & Jerry’s is excited about showcasing art from the community inside our scoop shop,” said general manager Chris Carter. “Making use of our walls to show what local artists are creating complements our social mission — to be actively involved in the places we live and do business. I hope this is the first of many art exhibits on our walls.”
Carter gave all the credit for the exhibit to Ms. Lipe, who teaches kindergarten through 5th-grade students at Vance Elementary. She was named the North Carolina Arts Educators Association “Art Educator of the Year” in 2017-2018.
Ben & Jerry’s is located at 19 Haywood Street. Current hours are Monday-Thursday 12 pm to 10 pm; Friday 12 pm – 11 pm; Saturday 11:30 am – 11 pm; Sunday 11:30 am – 10 pm.
For more information, call Carter at 310-601-6247.

You can’t beat a walk with a friend over good conversation. So, why not take a walk with lots of friends and a history expert to boot? Buncombe County Libraries is excited to announce its Strolling Through History program focused on getting you moving while taking in some experiential history. “Each one of the strolls is a little different. We’ll talk about the evolution of the architecture, famous (or not quite so famous) residents, important events, and more,” explains Pack Memorial Librarian Katherine Calhoun Cutshall. “On our Haywood Street stroll, we talked about how the street has seen two major rebirths and discussed the careers of two WWI nurses who grew up on the street while it was mostly residential.”
Pack Librarians are always looking for innovative ways to showcase the library’s portfolio of initiatives and resources. “The North Carolina Room is a hidden gem in our library system, so programs like Strolling Through History bring the collection to the streets of downtown while showing off resources and programs in a fun new way,” notes Katherine. And of course, exercising your muscles and social skills are important at any age
So, how can you get involved with the monthly Strolling Through History? There are two versions: one for elder adults and one for babies and their caregivers. If you’re interested in participating, the elder adults strolls are the third Friday of every month, and the babies and caretakers strolls are the third Wednesday of every month (except July). All strolls will meet at Pack Memorial Library at 10:30 a.m., and participants should wear comfortable shoes and bring water to stay hydrated. Registration is required.

Celebrate hit songs made famous by Elvis Presley at the Flat Rock Playhouse in the upcoming production, All Shook Up! A famous Broadway musical hit, All Shook Up combines the hilarity of Shakespearean comedies, such as A Midsummer Night’s Dream, with the rock & roll music of Elvis Presley. In a musical presentation akin to Godspell and Footloose, this jukebox musical tells the story of a small-town girl with big dreams, a stick-in-the-mud mayor who has squashed any fun in her town, and the surprise visit of a leather-jacketed, guitar-playing, hip-swinging stranger. Experience the magic of rock & roll, gospel, romance, mistaken identities alongside Broadway-caliber musical numbers and hits such as, “Love Me Tender,” “Heartbreak Hotel,” “Can’t Help Falling In Love”.

Come find out more about how the power of art can protect natural and historic treasures and how you can help.
These will be relaxed events featuring light fare and donated beer/wine from Asheville Brewing Company.
Details: Preserving A Picturesque America PAPA has partnered with the The Saints of Paint on an exciting creative collaboration! Join us Friday, August 9th or Thursday, August 22nd at 5:30 PM as artists and the community will have the chance to learn how they can be involved in this unique experience. Guests will learn about upcoming opportunities to get involved, including having their work shown at a forthcoming exhibition, joining a “paint out,” exploring volunteer needs, and how to become a donor. The event will also be used to announce PAPA’s May 1st Preserving A Picturesque America: The French Broad serial publication launch party and PAPA/SOP art exhibition.
Our Mission: To raise awareness and preserve natural and historic places through
art and literature.
Background: The original Picturesque America serials explored natural as well as architectural wonders across the country and gave Americans a new perspective on these national treasures. It also posed an important question. Over one hundred and forty years ago the artists and writers asked ” …what will become of these unreplaceable natural places? ” By re-creating the original Picturesque America books from 1872 to 1874 we will look at how we as a nation have answered that question. Respected and preserved or exploited and destroyed?
The Saints of Paint are a group of artists based in Asheville who are collectively using their talents to raise funds for groups dedicated to preserving the environment, caring for animals, and working for positive social change. They host shows to support non-profit groups whose work they find inspirational.

What: “The Children of Dionysus” a Solo Art Show by Elizabeth Albright
When: Opening Reception August 9th from 7-9pm. Show runs August 9th-September 8th
Where: Zapow Gallery, 150 Coxe Ave, Suite 101, Asheville, NC 28801
Since 2018 Elizabeth Albright has been reinventing mythological and historical narratives in her oil paintings by “defacing” classic art. Elizabeth’s last solo show, “Noble Beasts,” explored the symbolic connections between historical figures and animals by transforming renaissance royalty into the animal that best represented them. Her next show, “The Children of Dionysus,” will focus on the more conceptual idea of how mythological themes relate to ideas in classic art.
For this show Elizabeth will be transforming the figures in Rococo paintings into animals associated with the Greek God Dionysus.
Why Rococo? Why Dionyus?
In Greek mythology Dionysus, worshipped as early as 1500 BCE, was the God of wine, fertility, ecstasy, and all those other things that go along with frivolity and excess. Dionysus’ sacred animals were the panther, leopard, tiger, bull, horse, goat, donkey, and serpent.
Rococo painting, which originated in early 18th century Paris, embraced similar concepts. The artists focused on pastoral or boudoir tableaus populated by carefree aristocrats, performers, and farm folk who drink, sing, and cavort. These characters live in a world of amorous encounters and lighthearted youthful revelry, all idyllically portrayed using pastels and soft lines.
Although the myth of Dionysus and the Rococo art movement are separated by centuries, conceptually they are very similar. So why not marry the two and create a new narrative? Why not imagine what it would be like if the Dionysus myth were told in 18th century AD rather than 17th century BCE? In France instead of Greece?
Since the beginning of time, humans have been telling the same stories over and over again. With “The Children of Dionysus” Elizabeth hopes to tell another old story in a new way.
Opening Reception for “The Children of Dionysus” in the ZaPow Gallery Taproom, August 9th, from 7-9pm. Free drinks, music, masquerade ball, prizes, parlor games, and cake (let them eat cake!). The show runs from August 9th-September 8th. For more information visit ElizabethAlbrightArt.com.

Best known as the singer-songwriter/ front man of the Philadelphia based blues- rock band Cinderella, Tom Keifer, is enjoying continued success and touring in support of his solo debut, The Way Life Goes.
Though he possesses all the fire and brimstone of Rock’s greatest front men, you would be hard pressed to find the versatility and dimension that Keifer brings to a stage.
Whether delivering heart wrenching ballads, such as Don’t Know What You Got ‘til It’s Gone, channeling the soul of the bluesmen of the past with his slide guitar and lap steel, or blowing sax on rockers like “Shelter Me”, Keifer is clearly one of the most unique singers and accomplished musicians in Rock and Roll. Combine that with his new band, Tony Higbee (Guitar/vocals), Billy Mercer (Bass/vocals), Kory Myers (Keyboards/Vocals), Jarred Pope, (Drums), Savannah Keifer (Vocals/percussion/Piano) and Kendra Chantelle (Vocals/percussion), and there is only one possible outcome- A high energy rock show combining all the classic hits of Cinderella with new favorites from The Way Life Goes that will only leave you wanting more.

Montford Park Players Presents Classic Love Story, Romeo & Juliet
Romeo & Juliet
by William Shakespeare
Produced by Montford Park Players at the Hazel Robinson Amphitheatre
Show Dates:
August 2-24
Friday, Saturday and Sunday @ 7:30pm
Hazel Robinson Amphitheatre
92 Gay St. Asheville, NC
We’re proud announce our upcoming production of the classic romance Romeo & Juliet. All performances will be held at the Hazel Robinson Amphitheatre at 92 Gay Street in the heart of Asheville’s historic Montford District, from August 2nd through the 24th on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings at 7:30pm. This performance, like ALL of Montford Park Players’ shows, will be absolutely FREE to attend.
Romeo & Juliet remains one of the most-enduring stories in all of history, spawning countless productions at theaters around the world and filmed versions, both of the original and stories based on it, seemingly every few years. In this years’ version, director Mandy Bean presents the show close to as it may have originally been produced, traditional costumes and production concept.
The story of these “star-crossed lovers” was last presented by Montford Park Players five years ago. It tells the story of the Capulets and the Montagues, two families in a long-standing feud. When their children Juliet and Romeo, respectively, fall in love, the blowback is violent and even deadly. Although, it is a tragedy in the traditional sense, the play is very funny, charming and romantic in its early acts. Director Bean hopes that those who perceive of the show as a tear-jerker, will see the brilliant antics set forth in before things get heavy.
Romeo here is played by Jackson Cole with MPP-regular Sophie Stanley as his love, Juliet. The cast contains some of Montford’s most-popular players, including Devyn Ray Villareal, Haven Volpe, Jason Williams and David Broshar. The show is, as mentioned, directed by Mandy Bean, who directed the hit A Midsummer Night’s Dream last season. Costumes will be by Sam LeBroq, with choreography provided by Kristi DeVille.
For more information or to reserve seats, go to montfordparkplayers.org, or call at (828) 254-5146.
