When reflecting on the current state of the environment, it seems that we have entered into times of seismic sorrows. Carbon emissions, water pollution, fracking, and changing climate patterns all point to a troubling reality with serious consequences for human and non-human populations. Through weavings, installations, sculpture, and print, artists Rena Detrixhe and Tali Weinberg (Tulsa, OK) explore the complex relationship between humans and the planet, offering insights, expressing grief, and creating space for resilience and change.
In Time of Seismic Sorrows is curated by Marilyn Zapf and organized by the Center for Craft. The Center for Craft is supported in part by the N.C. Arts Council, a division of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.
Enjoy a visit to Christmas pasts from the 1840s to the 1890s. Each room contains antique and reproduction decorations and traditions. Four live trees, one of which will be decorated with traditional Appalachian decorations, hand made by our SMH over History club.

DEEP DIVE is a 5Rhythms movement exploration of deep listening. How can our bodies trust us if we don’t listen? This internal oriented dance is great for all ranges of movement including limited and chair bound. Move at your own speed.

We are honored to share our passion for our Beloved Black Bears in our exhibit at the “FW Gallery” in Woolworth Walk – downtown Asheville. We are grateful to have been chosen to be their Featured Artists. We want to also thank the many lovely people who work at Woolworth Walk and have supported and assisted us with the exhibit.
The FW Gallery exhibit will end Tuesday, January 29th at 6pm. Our permanent artist booth #229 downstairs “Beloved Black Bear” has over 50 black bear canvases 11×14 at $75 each. We hope you will stop by to visit.
We are happy to say that many black bear canvases have been sold and are now adorning many homes. Our wish is for all of us to share our compassion for the black bear with our friends, family, and neighbors and create connections with the bears giving them a voice.

As Virginia Woolf said, “one cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well.” Food and water are essential for survival, but mankind’s relationship to food has transformed over time from one of sustenance to one laden with personal and cultural significance.
A Matter of Taste explores depictions of food and drink in art and reveals how images of fruits and vegetables can function as complex metaphors for excess, status, memory, and politics. Drawn from southern museums and private collections, this exhibition showcases over 35 paintings, decorative arts, and works on paper by artists such as Andy Warhol, Wayne Thiebaud, Henri Cartier-Bresson and Claes Oldenburg.
This show spans 400 years and multiple continents, revealing the evolving role of food and drink in various media and cultural contexts. While depictions of fruit and vegetables appeared in ancient times, still life painting as an independent genre dates to 16th-century Holland.
In 19th-century America, still life paintings remained popular but evolved in terms of subject matter, media, and message. Painters such as Thomas Wightman, George Forster, and De Scott Evans embraced Dutch still lifes and used food as commentary on the current political climate and the transient state of the human condition.
Illustrated newspapers led to an increase of cartoons by artists such as Winslow Homer and William Hogarth, who utilized food and drink as social satire. The 20th-century modern art movement further changed the perception of food. The culture of mass production enabled Pop artists to elevate seemingly mundane foodstuffs to high art. Yet, other contemporary artists explored the symbolic and nostalgic role of food seen in works by Tim Tate, Linda Armstrong, and Laquita Thomson.
Visitors will also experience an elaborately set dining table fit for a sumptuous feast. Dining became its own art form over time and communicated one’s social standing and wealth. Each of the table’s six place settings represent a different culture and offer a glimpse into global dining customs. Selective drinkware will accompany this section revealing how tea sets and even punch bowls reflected an owner’s prestige.

UpCountry Brewing was founded in 2016 by John Cochran, a craft beer industry veteran since the mid-1990’s. John has worked many beer-related jobs in his 20+ years in brewing (including co-founding Terrapin Beer Company), and we are super excited to have his delicious beer in our taproom!
For this Pint NIght, we will be featuring:
Cold Hearted IPA; This bold IPA showcases a balanced malty backbone and fruity aromas. Chinook hops provide a touch of pine and grapefruit. At 7.3% ABV, it is sure to warm up even the coldest of hearts!
Isoprene IPA; Flaked wheat and oats subtly mimic that haze and smooth out the mouthfeel while a variety of hops add an aroma of fresh-squeezed citrus. This hazy IPA re-creates that day-break freshness and awakens the nature-lover in all of us.
Resting Bitter Face ESB; Resting Bitter Face is pretty straightforward, featuring the revered Fuggle and herbaceous Mount Hood hops with toasted sugar and caramel notes.
ManGose; this mango-fruited gose is citrusy and a bit salty with notes of coriander and a light, crisp finish.
Daniel Sage will be around to entertain us AND we will have some delicious food specials for you using UpCountry beer in the ingredients.

Speaker Bio – Kevan Frazier is an Asheville native and the Executive Director for Western Carolina University’s Asheville programs at Biltmore Park. Prior to WCU, Kevan was a member of the history faculty and an administrator at UNC Asheville. He is also the founder of Asheville by Foot, a local walking tour business as well as one of the co-owners of Well Played Board Game Café on Wall Street. As a small business owner and having spent more than half of his career in Alumni Relations, Fundraising, and Community Development, Kevan is no stranger to networking and its importance.

The Asheville Marathon and Half Training Group will have weekly technique and Hill Training on Thursday evenings at 6pm at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute Parking Lot – OLLI – UNCA.
Each workout will last one hour. During these workout sessions we will be doing some hill interval training (everyone’s favorite) to improve your hill technique as well as your conditioning.

The 3rd Annual Asheville Winter Swim League will kickoff in January and go through February. All levels and abilities of swimmers are welcome to attend!
What is the AVL Swim League? The intention of the swim league is to build a better swimming community in WNC. All levels and abilities of swimmers will be training together in a friendly, cohesive, structured and coached GROUP atmosphere.
How is the AVL structured? The Swim League is intended for adults, ages 16 and Up, we welcome swimmers of all experience levels including Novice/Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced/Expert Swim Groups with swim leaders and pool-side support and instruction.
Location: All swims unless otherwise noted will meet at the Leila Patterson Center in Fletcher, NC. The LPC Pool is an INDOOR, 25 Yard pool… pretty incredible! We meet Thursdays 6:30-7:30pm. We will have 3 lanes reserved for the Swim League. To prevent over crowding in the lanes, it will be first come first serve.
Cost: The Swim League is FREE. A $5 Suggested Donation for Coach Led Swims are accepted when you sign in at the swim. These donations are for iDream Athletes Foundation and for our coaches/leaders on the pool-deck at each group training.

Join Jennifer for an Intro to Pole Fitness 6 week series. By the end of this series, students will be all set to attend Pole 2 classes, and may also attend any Pole Dance classes on the schedule (such as Sultry Pole). Students will learn Pole Fitness Level 1 in its entirety, and will be proficient in many beginner skills upon completion. Expect a thorough yoga-inspired full body warm up followed by pole conditioning skills to help you achieve your pole fitness goals. Students will also learn basic pole combinations in addition to skills, and will have time to experiment and play at the end of class. Class will end with a brief feel-good cool down stretch session.

“A Colorful Beginning” for January at Asheville Gallery of Art
Asheville Gallery of Art’s January show, “A Colorful Beginning” ushers in the year with an expressive interpretation of color by more than 20 member artists. The show runs January 2-31 during gallery hours, 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11-4 p.m. Sunday. The gallery, located at 82 Patton Avenue in downtown Asheville across from Pritchard Park, will host a reception for the artists on Friday, January 4, from 5-8 p.m. Everyone is cordially invited to stop by.
After the holiday decorations come down, and before life settles once again into the gray days of winter, start the new year off right by surrounding yourself with the bright glow and warmth of colorful works of art. Each artist brings his or her unique interpretation of color to this group show. Now in its 30th year, Asheville Gallery of Art, noted for its diversity of styles, mediums, and techniques, promises a show that will uplift and cheer you as you wait for spring.
The pieces for the show, as well as the work of all 31 gallery members, will be on display and for sale through the month of January. Reclaimed Creations is a unique sculpture exhibit created by renowned artist Sayaka Ganz. Utilizing reclaimed plastic objects, such as discarded utensils, Ganz creates amazing sculptures that visually appear unified at a distance, but are in fact separated when examined up close. Described as using a “3D impressionistic” style, Ganz’s exhibit includes installations of animals in motion, which are in rich in color and energy, to create an illusion of form.
About the Artist
Born in Yokohama, Japan, Sayaka Ganz grew up living in Japan, Brazil and Hong Kong. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Indiana University, Bloomington, and a Master of Fine Arts degree in sculpture from Bowling Green State University in Ohio. A lecturer and teacher, Ganz’s work has been displayed at various institutions around the globe, including the Hermann Geiger Foundation in Cecina, Italy, the Isle Gallery in Isle of Man, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium in California.
My work is about perceiving harmony, even in situations that appear chaotic from the inside. When observing my sculptures up close, one might see gaps, holes and items being held on only by small points; step away, however, and the sculptures reveal the harmony created when the objects are aligned to the same general (but not identical) direction. Similarly, it is important to gain perspective by stepping back from current problems and look at the larger picture. Then one can perceive the beauty and patterns that exist.”
