White Horse Black Mountain Features Jazz Vocalist Maddy Winer
Maddy Winer and celebrated jazz guitarist Vince Lewis reunite at the White Horse Black Mountain, On December 5, 2018 at 7:00PM. Maddy and Vince will pay tribute to the artists whose popular songs shaped Americas musical identity – Great American Songbook favorites spanning the era of George Gershwin to Bill Joel. Of course, timeless popular Christmas songs will also be featured. Special guest artists: Bill Stowe on drums and Bill Fouty on upright Bass. Advance tickets are $10 at www.whitehorseblackmountain.com. Telephone: (828) 669-0816
“Maddy Winer has great musical instincts, a wonderful sound and best of all she knows how to read a lyric,” says legendary jazz guitarist Mundell Lowe. “I love the way Maddy and Vince work together on this CD; I feel as if musically they were thinking as one.”
Recording artist Maddy Winer is known for her effortless interpretation and jazz styling of the Great American Songbook. Maddy has headlined concerts throughout the U.S. and Canada including New York’s prestigious Lincoln Center. She is also a featured performer on the popular PBS special “Loonis McGlohon & Friends.” Maddy has appeared with countless jazz legends including Dave Brubeck, David Sanborn, Cyrus Chestnut, Joe Sample, George Shearing, Ellis Marsalis and Al Jarreau.
Her latest CD CROSSROADS features Maddy with legendary jazz guitarist Vince Lewis. The free-flowing musical interaction translates into the energy and excitement of a live performance, as opposed to just another recording session.
“Crossroads takes the listener on a musical journey of timeless standards representing the heart and soul of the Great American Songbook,” says Maddy. “I have always had a passion for the works of Antonio Carlos Jobim and included two of his classics that I love to sing. I also pay tribute to the contemporary works of Joni Mitchell and Van Morrison.”

This Thursday, December 6th, you are cordially invited to the Astronomy Club of Asheville’s 7th annual club holiday social and fundraiser auction! The event begins at 6:30 p.m., giving you time to look over our selection of nice silent and live auction items (many of them make wonderful holiday gifts) as well as time to enjoy an appetizing spread of tasty food and refreshments!
The event is open to the general public and you need not be a member to attend.
While we are thrilled that our meeting attendance is typically astronomical (pun intended), we seldom have enough time to socialize and get to know our like-minded friends better. We’re a strange breed – we often meet in dark locations, craning our necks upwards and chatting for hours with folks we won’t recognize in the light of day. But Thursday you’ll have a chance to prove you’re not THAT strange (well…. myself excepted)! Please join us and partake in some esprit de corps, get to know each other better, bid on an item or two and contribute your company to make our holiday event a success.
AND… if you do attend, we promise you will LAUGH heartily at our guest auctioneer, Randy Latta. We haven’t a clue what character he will conjure (that’s part of the fun!) but we guarantee it will be entertaining. Do yourself a favor and come along – if not for the food, drink, good company or the chance to bid and possibly win any number of great items, then come for the LAUGHS!!!!
Those who attend and register for an auction paddle will automatically be entered to win one of three special door prizes. While you will need to be present to win, you need not bid on any item to be eligible. And if you have an item that might be suitable for our auction, please bring it along.
Food, drink, friends, prizes, a chance to show your support for our club, AND LAUGHTER. What’s not to like???
We hope to see you Thursday at the Manheimer Room at UNCA’s Reuter Center. The festivities start at 6:30 p.m.
Dominic

Christmas fundraiser for the Tryon Summer Youth Theater
As a Director, Chris Tinkler knows how important the Tryon Summer Youth Theater is for kids—and families of those kids. It’s a character-building experience for the youngsters, bonding with their co-actors, taking responsibility not only for themselves, but for the final dazzling production. What a joy to witness all the hard work and incredible talent of our local youth come to fruition.
For the last three years an anonymous donor from the Polk County Community Foundation has made it possible for the Friday night show tickets to be just $5 each. This made a huge difference for the families of the performers. Now all the children in the family could attend; Grandma and Grandpa, and aunts and uncles and cousins and friends and neighbors—all could afford to experience live theater and applaud these amazing, hardworking kids.
Tinkler’s goal is to make all seats—for all performances—just $5. And to help with that goal, he’s staging a one-man show at the TLT Workshop: Truman Capote’s “A Christmas Memory”. The story takes place in the 1930s and describes a period in the lives of the seven-year-old narrator and an elderly woman who is his distant cousin and best friend. The narrative focuses on friendship and the joy of giving during the Christmas season.
The show runs for three performances, December 7 & 8 at 7:30pm, and December 9 at 3:00pm. Come early for some light hors d’oeuvres and holiday cheer and show your support for our area youth! Tickets are $25 and can be ordered online at www.tltinfo.org.The Workshop box office (516 S. Trade St. in Tryon), is also open between 10:00 am and 1:00 pm, December 3 through December 8, or you can call 828-0859-2466 for more information.

Do you or someone you know love wolves, dogs, love to paint, love wine, or just love to have fun and support our local wolfdog sanctuary while doing so??? Saturday, December 15th, come on out to Weinhaus at 86 Patton Ave in downtown Asheville for a wolf-themed Christmas “paint-and-sip” fundraiser!
Half of all tickets sales will be going directly to Full Moon Farm, a wolfdog santuary located in Black Mountain. (You can learn more about Full Moon Farm and its residents by clicking here: http://fullmoonfarm.org/ ) As it is with most animals, expenses can be much higher in the winter months, and running the sanctuary for these beautiful and majestic wolfdogs is no different. (They eat A LOT!) Not only will you be supporting the sanctuary by painting with us, but you will also have the opportunity to MEET one of the “ambassadogs” from the sanctuary, as well as talk to some of the volunteers and learn all about Full Moon Farm and wolfdogs!
Bring someone along as a Christmas gift, give someone this experience as a gift, give your finished painting as a gift, OR gift it all to yourself! (You’re TOTALLY allowed to do that.) The whole painting is instructed by one of our talented artists, step by step, and all supplies are provided. We also provide aprons to keep your clothes paint-free, and you get to take home your masterpiece at the end of class! Come ready to try a few brews or wines while you paint, which you can purchase right at the Weinhaus bar. (This event is definitely open to anyone younger than 21 years of age, and kids, too!)
Tickets are $35 per person and the class is limited to 32 guests, so get your tickets soonPlease purchase your tickets ahead of time, it helps us out greatly, and makes sure you get a spot.)
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

From Sierra Nevada:
When the Camp Fire started in the hills above our Chico brewery on November 8, 2018, it soon became the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in California history. The fire burned more than 153,000 acres, killed at least 85 people, and destroyed more than 13,000 homes. Many of our employees and community members were severely impacted by this tragic event.
In the days following the fire, we announced plans to brew Resilience Butte County Proud IPA, a fundraiser beer for Camp Fire relief. We committed to brewing the beer and donating 100% of the sales to the Sierra Nevada Camp Fire Relief Fund, aimed at long-term community rebuilding support. And we asked every brewery in the country to do it with us.
We sent out the “bat signal” calling our friends in the industry, asking our suppliers to donate ingredients, asking other breweries (our competitors) to donate their time and labor costs, and asking our wholesalers and retailers to carry the beer for free. It was a big ask, and we never could have anticipated the response.
More than 1,400 breweries signed up to brew Resilience. Our suppliers donated ingredients to every brewery nationwide. Wholesalers and retailers agreed to carry the beer and donate every dollar they received. All of them agreed to do this for free to benefit people they had never met.
In all, Resilience Butte County Proud IPA should hit the market in mid-late December more than 17,000 barrels—or 4.2 million pints—strong. Every dollar Sierra Nevada receives will go to those impacted by the Camp Fire.
Thank you to the brewing community. Thank you to our suppliers. Thank you to our wholesalers and retailers. And thank you to every single customer who is helping us rebuild our Butte County community—one pint at a time.
