Throughout our summer festival season, Brevard Music Center is delighted to present the following free events, which are held at Straus Auditorium and Searcy Hall (on the BMC campus) and Transylvania County Library (TCL) in downtown Brevard. All seating is general admission.
From the Pulitzer Prize to the Tony Award to the Academy Award, Frank Loesser has won them all! Join us in celebrating the legendary American songwriter with this special evening of his favorite melodies, including Broadway’s Guys and Dolls, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, and The Most Happy Fella, among others acclaimed works.

The Carolina Mountain Meetup Group was founded by the Carolina Mountain Club to access the Meetup platform. As long-standing hiking and trail maintaining club, the mission of the Carolina Mountain Club is • to explore the mountains of Western North Carolina and adjacent regions through its hiking trails and rivers, • to carry out the responsibilities we have been given by the Appalachian Trail Conservancy to develop and maintain our assigned section of the Appalachian Trail and to act as its stewards, • to develop and maintain other hiking trails in Western North Carolina as approved by the Club Council, • to encourage the conservation of our natural scenery, • to foster in Club members knowledge and enjoyment of hiking, trail construction and maintenance, and fellowship and enjoyment of the out-of-doors.
Pet policy: Pets are not permitted on regular Carolina Mountain Club hikes. However, they may be permitted on Carolina Mountain Meetup hikes at the leaders discretion only if specifically stated in the hike description.

This meetup group gives paddlers of all skill levels a chance to meet other paddlers for flat water and mildwater paddling. We get together to share our love of water and the outdoors. We paddle mostly local/regional waters, and may also plan overnight, weekend, or longer trips farther away. We share tips, information, and knowledge. All members are welcome to post trips and/or discussions. All are welcome. We have NO RULES except be safe and have fun.
“Mildwater” means different things to different people. For new paddlers, mild may mean lakes and flat rivers. For those who have whitewater experience, Class 2+ or Class 3 whitewater may be mild. Meetup organizers provide descriptions of their outings. It is your responsibility to read those descriptions, ask questions if needed, and decide whether a given outing is right for you, given your skills and equipment.

You can’t beat a walk with a friend over good conversation. So, why not take a walk with lots of friends and a history expert to boot? Buncombe County Libraries is excited to announce its Strolling Through History program focused on getting you moving while taking in some experiential history. “Each one of the strolls is a little different. We’ll talk about the evolution of the architecture, famous (or not quite so famous) residents, important events, and more,” explains Pack Memorial Librarian Katherine Calhoun Cutshall. “On our Haywood Street stroll, we talked about how the street has seen two major rebirths and discussed the careers of two WWI nurses who grew up on the street while it was mostly residential.”
Pack Librarians are always looking for innovative ways to showcase the library’s portfolio of initiatives and resources. “The North Carolina Room is a hidden gem in our library system, so programs like Strolling Through History bring the collection to the streets of downtown while showing off resources and programs in a fun new way,” notes Katherine. And of course, exercising your muscles and social skills are important at any age
So, how can you get involved with the monthly Strolling Through History? There are two versions: one for elder adults and one for babies and their caregivers. If you’re interested in participating, the elder adults strolls are the third Friday of every month, and the babies and caretakers strolls are the third Wednesday of every month (except July). All strolls will meet at Pack Memorial Library at 10:30 a.m., and participants should wear comfortable shoes and bring water to stay hydrated. Registration is required.

In 2019 Shindig on the Green, which features a stage show and informal jam sessions around the park, continues at its original location — formerly known as City County Plaza, now transformed into the new Pack Square Park. Moogmentum will kick off at the Asheville Masonic Temple Theater on Tuesday evening, August 13, 2019 with a pair of special events:
- 7pm: From the Beginning With Herb Deutsch, in Conversation with Larry Fast – Herb Deutsch, the educator, innovator, and musician who was the catalyst and the co-collaborator on the development of Moog synthesizer in 1964, will talk about his very early days forging new sonic pathways with Bob. Woven into his insights will be listening sessions of the rare “Abominatron Tape“, the 84-minute tape that Bob sent Herb with the prototype in 1964, in which he describes and demonstrates every single parameter of this new sonic creature. - 9pm: The Story of Bob and i – Legendary keyboardist Patrick Moraz (YES, Refugee, The Moody Blues), in conversation with Larry Fast, shares a one-of-a kind synthesis of performance and interview during which he will perform on Bob Moog’s personal piano and on various synthesizers, interspersed with sharing unique insights about the extensive time he spent working closely with Bob in the mid-1970s, and about their decades-long friendship. Rarely seen photos will be woven throughout the concert, as will audio and video from Patrick’s long career. Historian, technologist, and musician Larry Fast will guide the discussion with Patrick. On Thursday, August 15th, multi-instrumentalist, composer, modular synthesist, and clinician Lisa Bella Donna will dazzle the Moogentum attendees, and Larry Fast will offer a Keynote Message at the Asheville Music Hall.
- 11:30am: Synthesizer Alchemy, a Workshop with Lisa Bella Donna Explore the sonic landscape with dynamic synthesist Lisa Bella Donna in this insightful workshop as she shares the vast possibilities of using a variety of contemporary and vintage synthesizers with various unique effect pedals. Lisa will lend her decades of experience to share insights into musical and sound design, and take questions throughout the session. A CD signing will follow. - 4pm: Moogseum Ribbon Cutting – The Asheville Chamber of Commerce celebrates the grand opening of the Moogseum with a champagne toast and tour of the Moogseum with Michelle Moog-Koussa. This event is free and open to the public.
- 8pm: Sonic Explorations, a Concert with Lisa Bella Donna –Synthesist Lisa Bella Donna will electrify the stage at the Asheville Music Hall by bringing contemporary and vintage synthesizers together for an evening of sound sculpting and sequencing, mixed with improvisational explorations. Buncombe County Libraries is excited to announce its Strolling Through History program focused on getting you moving while taking in some experiential history. “Each one of the strolls is a little different. We’ll talk about the evolution of the architecture, famous (or not quite so famous) residents, important events, and more,” explains Pack Memorial Librarian Katherine Calhoun Cutshall. “On our Haywood Street stroll, we talked about how the street has seen two major rebirths and discussed the careers of two WWI nurses who grew up on the street while it was mostly residential.”
Pack Librarians are always looking for innovative ways to showcase the library’s portfolio of initiatives and resources. “The North Carolina Room is a hidden gem in our library system, so programs like Strolling Through History bring the collection to the streets of downtown while showing off resources and programs in a fun new way,” notes Katherine. And of course, exercising your muscles and social skills are important at any age
So, how can you get involved with the monthly Strolling Through History? There are two versions: one for elder adults and one for babies and their caregivers. If you’re interested in participating, the elder adults strolls are the third Friday of every month, and the babies and caretakers strolls are the third Wednesday of every month (except July). All strolls will meet at Pack Memorial Library at 10:30 a.m., and participants should wear comfortable shoes and bring water to stay hydrated. Registration is required.
