Mast General Store – Land Trust Day/Week
We are so grateful to Mast General Store in Asheville and Waynesville for continuing to support SAHC’s land, water, and farmland conservation as a Land Trust Day sponsor! These two Mast General Store locations will donate 20% of proceeds from sales on Saturday, June 5 to Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy.
PLUS – this year they are running a special “Round-Up” campaign for conservation from June 1st through 6th. Shoppers have the opportunity to ’round up’ their purchase total to the dollar when checking out, and the Asheville and Waynesville locations of Mast General Store will donate those ’round up’ proceeds to SAHC, too!

Second Gear in Asheville, NC is donating 1% of proceeds from all sales during the month of June to Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy – their Nonprofit Partner of the Month. PLUS – as Land Trust Day sponsors, Second Gear will donate 10% of proceeds from sales on Saturday, June 5. Get the outdoor gear you need at a great price, and help support local conservation efforts while you do it – it’s a win-win for everyone!
We’re kicking off our Spring Annual Fund Campaign! With your help, we’ve been able to do some amazing things this past year, from hosting major traveling exhibitions like Across the Atlantic to delivering 1,600 Art Kits for Kids to local students and fostering in-depth conversations about art and artists through virtual programs. Your gift to the Annual Fund supports all of this and more.
KEY FACTS:
- In the past few days, hospital partners are reporting they are using blood at a much higher rate than normal. When demand is high, and the supply is critically low – that is a dangerous equation for the community.
- Because of the critically low supply, The Blood Connection (TBC) is now having to back-order blood products. This has affected 12 hospital partners so far.
- 48% of days this month, TBC DID NOT collect enough blood to cover hospitals’ needs. For comparison, in May of 2020 (during the pandemic) TBC collected enough to cover those needs 84% of the days.
- There is a high likelihood that TBC will have to start rationing blood by the end of the weekend.
- Heading into a holiday weekend – hospitals are stocking up their blood supply. TBC has already not been able to provide those products.
- The community is the ONLY solution to this dangerous problem. The blood supply for local hospitals is in the community’s hands.

- Pick a Volunteer Assignment! Decide what volunteer position works best for you! Some assignments can get started right away and some require prior orientation and training such as animal handling training that you can get started on.
- Start Volunteering! Get started in your position. Our volunteers make a huge impact in Henderson County to ensure both pets and their people are happy, healthy, and thriving. We wouldn’t be able to accomplish all we do without them.
Sunny summer days make the perfect backdrop for outdoor adventures in the mountains you love. National Trails Day falls on the first Saturday in June – along with Land Trust Day! Conservation land trusts like Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy play a critical role in protecting and managing land and water resources that benefit you and millions of people in the Southeast. Highland Brewing Company – Seasonal Release June 26
This month Highland Brewing Company is releasing the NEW seasonal brew “Peachful Picnic”. The seasonal release party will be held in the Meadow on Saturday, June 26 from 3 to 7 pm. For each pint of Peachful Picnic sold during the release party, Highland Brewing Co. will donate $1 to Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy to support land and water conservation.

Looking to get involved, stay active, and meet some new friends? Sand Hill Community Garden workdays take place on Wednesdays (6-8 p.m.) and Saturdays (10 a.m.-noon) from Feb. 27-Oct. 30, 2021, at Buncombe County Sports Park. The garden is located on 16 Apac Dr. in West Asheville/Enka-Candler.
Join friends and neighbors as they come together on common ground to raise fresh, organic vegetables and fruits for the Enka community.
Expect to wear a mask and maintain social distance throughout. Tools and hand sanitizer are available, but any gloves, loppers, pruners, or gardening tools you can bring will decrease the amount of contact between volunteers. Please wear work clothes to get dirty and closed-toe shoes. Sunscreen, water, and a hat are also handy items to have on hand.
Sand Hill Community Garden has been growing fresh produce since 2011 and raised over 1,200 lbs. of organic produce last year.

The Playhouse Gardeners are in need of 8 volunteers to support the WNC Flyer bike ride on the morning of June 6th. In return, for this support, the race organizers thank not-for-profit organizations with a donation. For the last 5-6 years the Playhouse Gardeners have received an impactful donation which has been fed directly into continuing the upkeep of our beautiful gardens at Flat Rock Playhouse. Volunteers will be helping to direct riders at intersections to complete their major ride as well as greet and offer riders sustenance at rest stops. This is a great opportunity to dust away COVID-19 cobwebs and enjoy our beautiful landscape without needing to get on a bicycle.
