With deep ties to Houston’s influential early-’90s rap scene, Devin the Dude rolled through several generations of hip-hop, cultivating a laid-back style fixated on weed, partying, and his distinctively hazy perspective on everyday life. Producing as well as rapping, he began releasing solo albums in 1998 with The Dude. He quickly became a rapper’s rapper, collaborating with big-name talents from Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg to De La Soul, Nas, Andre 3000, and many others. Though he never rose to the mainstream success of some of his peers, albums like 2007’s stony yet intricate Waiting to Inhale were hits with critics and a dedicated cult following. He landed in the Top 20 of Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart in 2010 with Suite 420 and Gotta Be Me and hit number nine on the Top Rap Albums chart with 2013’s One for the Road. Devin the Dude has remained a left-of-center favorite with albums like 2017’s Acoustic Levitation, 2019’s Still Rollin’ Up: Somethin’ to Ride With, and 2021’s Soulful Distance.

Devin the Dude was born Devin Copeland in Pontiac, Michigan, but raised in Florida and Texas. As a child, he went back and forth from New Boston to Houston and finally settled in the latter after he graduated high school. In the late ’80s, Devin met Rob Quest, a blind rapper, and producer who was part of a Houston crew called the Coughee Brothaz. Later, the duo formed a group named the Odd Squad and recruited Devin’s longtime friend Jugg Mugg and a local DJ named DJ Screw. Screw (who was later replaced by DJ Styles) took the group’s demo tape to Rap-A-Lot Records CEO James Smith, who quickly signed the group in 1992. Their debut album, Fadanuf fa Erybody!!, was released in 1994 with “I Can’t See It” as the lead single and video.

Although hip-hop fans praised the effort put out by the Odd Squad, their album was not as commercially successful as they hoped. While the group went back to the drawing board, Rap-A-Lot franchise artist Scarface approached Devin to be a part of his new group, Facemob. Facemob released one album in 1996, The Other Side of the Law, and then broke up due to internal problems. At this time, Devin decided to work on his debut solo album, The Dude, with the help of Smith and Scarface.

The Dude was released in 1998 with virtually no video and little radio play. It was a smoothed-out, funk-laden album and an ode to wine, women, and weed. Regardless, the album built a large underground following and even caught the attention of veteran hip-hop producer Dr. Dre. He contacted Devin in 1999 and asked him to be a part of the 2001 album on the track “Fuck You.” This single appearance made Devin a hot commodity, earning him appearances on songs with De La Soul, Raphael Saadiq, veteran rap group UGK, and a solo track on the Oz soundtrack.

His anticipated sophomore LP, Just Tryin’ ta Live, was released in the summer of 2002 and featured appearances from Nas, Xzibit, and Raphael Saadiq with production from Dre, DJ Premier, and his Coughee Brothaz. To tha X-Treme arrived two years later and was followed in 2007 by Waiting to Inhale, his first album to crack the Top 40 on Billboard’s album chart. It featured guest appearances from Snoop Dogg, Lil Wayne, Bun B, and more. It would also be Devin’s last record with Rap-A-Lot after a 15-year relationship. He signed on with Razor & Tie for his 2008 album Landing Gear. Suite #420 followed in 2010 and had the honor of being released on the stoner’s holiday of April 20. His seventh LP, Gotta Be Me, arrived later that year.

In 2013, Devin issued One for the Road (eOne). His eighth full-length entered the Top 50 of the Billboard R&B/hip-hop chart. In 2017, he returned with the collaborative single “Smoke with Me,” with rapper Crim Dela Crim. He also issued the Acoustic Levitation album, which was accompanied by a tour of the same name. In 2019, he returned with his ninth studio LP, Still Rollin’ Up: Somethin’ to Ride With. The full-length Soulful Distance arrived in February 2021.

PONCÉ is a rock ’n’ roll band from Nashville, TN fronted by twin brothers, Carson and Michael Poncé. The twins have opened for musical giants such as Bomba Estéreo, PHOX, Andy Frasco, Matt Thiessen, CBDB and The Ataris and the group draws heavy influences from The Killer, Cage The Elephant and Tom Petty.

Based in Asheville, NC, the genre-fluid trio, Chilltonic, doles out groove-centric rhythms that are easy on the ears and melt the soul. An eclectic pastiche of sound influenced by pop, rock, hip hop, funk, and reggae — the engaging songwriting speaks to the human condition and the hooks stick in the head for days on end.

Led by frontman, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Chris Higdon, The Mango Furs are a psychedelic band for the modern world, swirling the vintage influences of 1960s garage rock, surf music, and other trippy sounds into contemporary records like 2021’s Passages. This is textured, transportive music, as warm and woozy as the sunbaked Gulf Coast shoreline that ran beside Higdon’s hometown.

Raised in coastal Florida, Chris first fell in love with rock & roll while sitting behind the dashboard of his father’s truck. “My dad would listen to Allman Brothers or Jimi Hendrix and play drums on the steering wheel,” he remembers. Before long, Chris was playing rock songs of his own, earning write-ups in the local paper while still a teenager. Along the way, he also spent some time living with his grandmother, an eccentric painter whose unchecked creativity inspired her grandson. “She dressed crazily and wasn’t afraid to do her own thing,” says Chris, who named Mango Furs after a brightly-colored item from his grandmother’s closet.

Passages arrives on the heels of Mango Furs’ 2019 debut, Inner Migrations. Higdon wrote more than 40 songs for the project, eventually choosing a collection of 10 tracks that mixed neo-psychedelia, shoegaze, chillwave, and rock & roll into the same track list. The result is an album grounded not only in spacey arrangements, but sharp songwriting, too. It’s a record that casts a mood while delivering a message, with Higdon writing about the various passages in his own life.

“I’d gone through some big life changes, having lost my grandmother and becoming a father,” he says of the creative process. “Time doesn’t stop, though. It just keeps moving, and it’s up to you to fulfill your dreams and chase down your goals. No one’s going to do it for us. Passages is about moving through those transitions in your life.”

Atmospheric and anthemic, Passages brims with synthesizers, electric guitar fuzz, snippets of field recordings, echoes of reverb, and plenty of melodic spark. There’s a roomy reach to songs like “Be the Wheel Not the Road” and “Heart Ghosts,” which Chris credits to the longtime influence of Pink Floyd. “I watched Live From Pompeii years ago, back when the world was still coming out of the grunge era,” he remembers. “At the time, the radio was playing a lot of in-your-face music, but Pink Floyd was different. Those guys laid back and only spoke up with their instruments when it was needed. It taught me a lot about learning to shut up, listen, and let other things happen.”

Years later, Chris Higdon is still listening. Passages is the latest chapter in a story that’s still unfolding, capturing a prolific songwriter reaching his peak as a producer, bandleader, guitarist, and musical auteur. It’s headphone music at its most compelling — evocative, ethereal, and immersive, designed to pull the listener into the album’s lush soundscape — performed by a band whose songs have been heard on MTV shows, Netflix programs, and concerts alongside headliners like Liz Cooper & the Stampede.

“Music should be about sincerity and intention,” he says. “It shouldn’t be about trying to ‘make it.’ To me, ‘making it’ is just having the ability to make music. I’ve learned that, and maybe that’s why Passages has a sunnier color to it than what I did before. It’s uplifting. It’s feel-good music.”

Throughout his 30+ year career, Dan Tyminski has left his mark in every corner of modern music. Tyminski’s voice famously accompanies George Clooney’s performance of the Stanley Brother’s classic song, “I’m A Man of Constant Sorrow,” in the film, Oh Brother, Where Art Thou and his vocal collaboration with Swedish DJ Avicii on the song “Hey, Brother” was a global smash, having been streamed over 1 billion times to date.

Dan has also contributed guitar and/or harmony to projects by Martina McBride, Reba McEntire, Brad Paisley, Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, Kenny Chesney, LeAnn Rimes, Aaron Lewis and Rob Thomas, to name a few. In addition to his highly successful solo career, Dan Tyminski has played guitar and mandolin for Alison Krauss and Union Station since 1994. His unmatched instrumental skills and burnished, soulful tenor voice have been key components of the band.

Dan has been honored with 14 Grammy Awards, was named Male Vocalist of the Year by the International Bluegrass Music Association 4x, and was recognized as 2004’s Male Vocalist of the Year by the Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music in America.

The Dan Tyminski Band will be on tour throughout 2022 in support of a forthcoming full-length album. The Dan Tyminski Band is Maddie Denton (fiddle), Jason Davis (banjo), Grace Davis (bass), and Gaven Largent (dobro).

REHEARSALS: Production Calendar. Rehearsals will be held Sundays, Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 6:30PM – 9:30PM beginning September 18th.  A printed rehearsal calendar will be available at auditions – you are able to list any conflicts you have with the rehearsal schedule at this time.

DIRECTOR SEEKS: A cast of 9 principal roles and 10+ ensemble roles. Actors of all ages, gender identities, races, ethnicities, and disabilities will be considered for any desired role indicated on their audition sheet.

AUDITION MATERIAL:
Singing: Please prepare 16 bars of music and bring your sheet music to the audition in the key in which you will be singing. We will provide an accompanist. Acapella is fine if you don’t have sheet music. The music director will also have you sing scales.

Dance: All those auditioning will learn a short routine with choreographer Rose Pillmore. Dances will be modified as needed to ensure accessibility of choreographic content. No need to prepare in advance, just wear something you can move in.

Flashback is an Asheville NC based Arena Rock Band playing classics from Boston, Bon Jovi, Van Halen, Def Leppard and many more. We can’t wait to welcome Flashback to the Orange Peel, helping to raise money for Give To The Music and promoting music education for local students.

Music Academy Asheville’s Rock Academy bands will warm up the crowd with performers ranging in age from elementary school kids to adults who are discovering their inner rock star.
