When reflecting on the current state of the environment, it seems that we have entered into times of seismic sorrows. Carbon emissions, water pollution, fracking, and changing climate patterns all point to a troubling reality with serious consequences for human and non-human populations. Through weavings, installations, sculpture, and print, artists Rena Detrixhe and Tali Weinberg (Tulsa, OK) explore the complex relationship between humans and the planet, offering insights, expressing grief, and creating space for resilience and change.
In Time of Seismic Sorrows is curated by Marilyn Zapf and organized by the Center for Craft. The Center for Craft is supported in part by the N.C. Arts Council, a division of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.

Local Live returns to Whitehorse with another evening filled with world class local original music. Host Jay Brown welcomes the one and only Angie Heimann, along with the soulful stylings of Carolina man JQ Vay
Angie Heimann, front woman of the Mendocino County, CA born band the Blushin’ Roulettes, and more recent member of the newly formed North Carolina band The Appalucians, pens earthy, old-time tunes with a modern twist. “Her songs are stripped down, sexy little jewel boxes stuffed with ancient mountain magic,” says the San Francisco Free Folk Festival. Angie belts her stirring songs of damsels in their bliss and distress in a clarion vibrato often likened to Iris Dement.

Canton’s Labor Day festival began in 1906 as a celebration of the Western North Carolina worker whose grit and fierce determination led to the construction of the Champion Fibre Company paper mill that would persevere through a great depression, two world wars, and two buy outs. Today, Canton’s mill is going strong. It is one of longest-operating mills in the United States and is uniquley positioned adjacent to a downtown. Like the mill, the Canton Labor Day Festival has not missed a beat. In 2018 the mill workers and wider community will celebrate the 113th festival, continuing Canton’s bragging rights of hosting the longest running Labor Day festival in the south.
Come to downtown Canton on September 2nd-3rd and experience a living, breathing manufacturing town with unmatched authenticity and pride. Celebrate Canton’s unique manufacturing legacy and all things made in Western North Carolina.
