From our home to yours: students and faculty share new concerts, living room recitals, and masterclasses.

Enjoy our inaugural Virtual Living Room Concert. BMC violin faculty member Benjamin Sung discusses and performs Eugène Ysaÿe’s Sonata No. 2, I. Obsession, Prelude. This movement includes quotes from Bach’s E Major Partita infused with the recognizable melody of the “Dies Irae”.

BMC trombone faculty member David Jackson joins Michael Dease, the Director of the Jazz Institute @ Brevard, who wrote this special arrangement of “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” Originally for a vocal chorus, this arrangement features eight trombone parts supported by string bass, organ, and drums.

BMC alums and 2020 students RJ McDowell and Wesley Hamilton share this special at-home performance. Written by Italian composer Alessandro Rolla, this viola duet lets both parts shine. This is the first movement, Allegro Maestoso, from the Duo in G Major. RJ holds degrees from Furman University and Belmont University, and Wesley recently graduated with her undergraduate degree from the University of Georgia.

Appalachian Ballad Singing: Singers and their Songs
Jul 13 @ 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm
Online

Ballads and unaccompanied traditional songs of Appalachia are timeless, soulful and evoke a deep sense of connection. For generations, people have kept these songs alive by teaching them to each other on porches, at gatherings and at work. In this presentation, musician Susan Pepper will sing some of her favorite ballads from the region while sharing stories and showing photos of the people and places from which she learned her songs. Pepper has spent many years collecting songs and stories from traditional singers in Western North Carolina. She has performed at the Library of Congress and teaches ballad workshops online as well as at regional and national venues such as Banjo-Fiddle Frolic, John C. Campbell Folk School and Traditional Youth Song Weekend. She has a Master of Arts in Appalachian Studies with a focus in music, and created an album of her field recordings with a grant from the North Carolina Arts Council. She is also the co-producer of the recent Appalachian music film, The Mountain Minor.

This event will take place as a webinar.

Get Started on Ukulele or Guitar! (Virtual group class for KIDS)
Jul 14 @ 11:00 am – 11:45 am
Online

Image may contain: 6 people

During this 5-week online group class, Ben Brill will cover the fundamentals of ukulele and guitar and teach kids several cool-sounding songs they can play on the instrument right away. The group will even co-create an original song by the end of the class.

*For students interested in guitar, they’ll need to have a simple $10 device called a Capo to play along with the class.

This is a FUN, low-pressure way to have some enjoy music this summer. It’s great if students can attend all 5 classes, but they still can drop in any day and learn.

The event will happen weekly on Tuesday’s at 11 AM, starting July 7th, 2020. If you don’t yet own an instrument, Ben can make some suggestions. The cost of the sessions is $20 per class and can be paid upfront (all classes), OR per session.

If you’re interested in the group, send Ben a message so that you can receive the secure Zoom links to the meetings and farther instructions.
