Works for Viola & Piano by Women Composers

Join us for this wonderful program of works for viola and piano by women composers, including Luisa LeBeau, Dora Pejacevic, Fernande Decruck, and Rebecca Clarke.  Most of these women have been sadly neglected despite their lyrical and powerful music as male composers and musicians have left them out of the mainstream repertoire.

Hungarian-American violist Anna Pelczer has become a sought-after guest orchestral leader both in Germany and abroad. Recent performances have been with the Beethoven Orchester Bonn, the Philharmonie Baden-Baden, the Staatsorchester Mainz, and the English National Ballet, among others. A frequent collaborator for contemporary works, she is a member of the Lucerne Festival Alumni and recently premiered several new works by Kaija Saariaho. In November 2018, she premiered a new commission from Yoshiaki Onishi at the International Viola Conference in Rotterdam, Netherlands.

An active teacher, Ms. Pelczer maintains a private studio and has served as a coach at the Verbier Festival Amateur Chamber Music Week in Switzerland. She is currently Professor of Viola and Chamber Music at the European Summer Music Academy in Kosovo, and has been a part of the teaching faculty at the Goppisberger Musik Wochen in Grächen, Switzerland since July 2014. Anna Pelczer attended Yale University and the Yale School of Music, where she studied with and served as teaching assistant to Jesse Levine. She has participated in masterclasses with Zoltán Tóth, Bruno Pasquier, and Rainer Moog.

A former Fellow with the New World Symphony, she attended the International Ensemble Modern Academy, the Festival Pablo Casals, and performed as principal viola at the Verbier, Schleswig-Holstein, Luzern, and Tanglewood Music Festivals.  Ms. Pelczer lives in Karlsruhe, Germany, and performs on a viola made in 2011 by Ersen Aycan.

Jazz Sunday at One World Brewing West is a modern jazz jam held every Sunday afternoon from 1-4pm. Previously known as Jazz Monday, the jam has been running non stop since July, 2018 at the West Asheville brewery and is hosted weekly by The Fully Vaccinated Jazz Trio, consisting of Ray Ring on guitar, Jason DeCristofaro on drums, piano and vibraphone, and Connor Law on bass. Jazz Sunday typically features a guest artist for a short set and then welcomes jazz musicians of all levels to sit in for the remainder of the afternoon on One World’s spacious outdoor stage.

Whether blowing bebop over a Mingus tune or freely improvising with Anthony Braxton, Michael Rabinowitz’s contributions have changed the conception of what the bassoon can do. Since graduating with a BFA in music performance from SUNY at Purchase in the late seventies Michael’s improvisatory skills opened the door for the bassoon to enter a variety of musical environments not traditionally associated with the instrument.

He has recorded with Ira Sullivan, Red Rodney, Wynton Marsalis, John Hicks, Dave Douglas, Chris Potter and Joe Lovano. His festival appearances include Chicago, Montreal, Berlin, Tri-city, Tanglewood, San Francisco and Hollywood Bowl. Michael is a founding member of The Charles Mingus Orchestra which can be heard regularly at the Jazz Standard in NYC. His quartet Bassoon and the Wild has performed at the The Vanderbilt Planetarium, Frick Museum, JVC Jazz Festival, , Penn State, Kavehaz and other venues in NYC. Ocean Eyes is Michael’s 5th CD and documents the development of his quartet with mostly original compositions. The Buffet Group USA has been Michael’s sponsor for the past fifteen years and has supported his participation in performances and master classes at the IDRS most notably the Jazz at June Festival in Oklahoma with oboist Paul McCandless

Michael Rabinowitz is joined by the three of the top jazz musicians in western North Carolina; Michael Jefry Stevens, Zack Page, and Rick Dilling. It promises to be a rare opportunity to hear great world-class jazz music without traveling to New York or Chicago.

White Horse’s legendary Open Mic re-starts after a year off for bad behavior (COVID, really). Host Bill Altork will help us present wonderfully talented folks on their way up. The signup sheet is placed on the bar at 6:30 and the first ten to sign in are the performers for the evening. Each gets 15 minutes or three songs. It’s a lot of fun… especially since it’s free!

We’ll be following all COVID-19 protocols and we ask that you wear your mask when you’re not singing or enjoying a beverage from the bar.

Local artists and arts advocates can now reserve tickets ($45) for the inaugural 2022 State of the Arts Brunch, taking place Wednesday, November 2 from 10:30 a.m.-12 p.m. at The Orange Peel in downtown Asheville. Organized by the Asheville Area Arts Council, the brunch provides a critical snapshot of the current state of our creative sector. It also connects all members of the arts community, no matter their medium or method of participation, through celebration, education, and activation.

The brunch offers not only the opportunity to connect with area artists, but also to learn and share information essential to sustaining a thriving arts community. Asheville Area Arts Council  Executive Director Katie Cornell will share the State of the Arts update – a report on the present and future of the arts in Asheville and Buncombe County. The update will highlight topics including overall creative jobs and industry sales for 2022, the Buncombe County Creative Jobs pandemic report, a creative manufacturing study co-developed by the Arts Council  with Land of Sky and Riverbird Research, and more.

The Arts Council will also share a not-to-be-missed announcement that will shape the future of the arts in Asheville, including several exciting new contributions the organization  will make to the local arts community.

Additionally, featured speakers Mayor Esther Manheimer and Buncombe County Board of Commissioners Chair Brownie Newman will share remarks about how the City and County support arts and culture.

John Ellis, longtime arts advocate and former Executive Director of the Diana Wortham Theatre, now the Wortham Center for the Performing Arts, will be presented with the John Cram Arts Leadership Award (the “Crammy”), honoring his contribution to the arts in Asheville. Ellis will also announce his choice of local arts-based nonprofit organization or community project to receive an arts council grant of $1,000.

Attendees will enjoy a hearty, family-style brunch spread courtesy of 67 Biltmore, hosted in the spacious, lively Orange Peel (101 Biltmore Ave.), one of the premier performance venues in downtown Asheville.

“If you care about the arts in our area, this is the event for you,” said Katie Cornell, Executive Director of the Arts Council. “This is Asheville’s creative pulse check with exciting announcements, a delicious meal, and great conversation – you won’t want to miss it!”

The State of the Arts Brunch is part of the Asheville Area Arts Council’s ongoing Creative Sector Series. Malaprop’s Book Club

Enjoy a $6 glass of wine and 1/2 off bottles every Wednesday night!

Join us for a weekly mountain music JAM with players in a round, where the session is focused on regional fiddle tunes and songs! You are welcome to come and listen or to learn and join in. This event supports the Henderson County Junior Appalachian Musician (JAM) Kids Program. Free but donations are accepted. Weekly event takes place at Oklawaha Brewing Company.
