The Book for September is: ‘Klara and the Sun’ by Kazuo Ishiguro
Sep 22 @ 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm
Citizen Vinyl

The book for September is: ‘Klara and the Sun’ by Kazuo Ishiguro

From the best-selling author of Never Let Me Go and The Remains of the Day, a stunning new novel—his first since winning the Nobel Prize in Literature—about the wondrous, mysterious nature of the human heart.

From her place in the store, Klara, an Artificial Friend with outstanding observational qualities, watches carefully the behavior of those who come in to browse, and of those who pass on the street outside. She remains hopeful that a customer will soon choose her, but when the possibility emerges that her circumstances may change forever, Klara is warned not to invest too much in the promises of humans.

In Klara and the Sun, Kazuo Ishiguro looks at our rapidly changing modern world through the eyes of an unforgettable narrator to explore a fundamental question: what does it mean to love?

Sound Journey and Guided Soul Retrieval
Sep 24 @ 10:00 am – 1:00 pm
Inner Wolf Retreat Space

We will begin by forest bathing as we bask in the beautiful natural environment at the Inner Wolf Retreat Space just 40 minutes from downtown Asheville, NC. Then, Dawn Sagonias of Sound of a New Dawn (https://www.soundofanewdawn.com/) will lead us on a Sound Journey. Relax & renew with gentle sound healing with gongs, singing bowls, and other soothing sounds to calm your nervous system and clear energy. Grounding gongs, timeless & soaring singing bowls, refreshing chimes, a relaxing ocean drum, amongst other instruments help us to re-imagine life and bring fresh air to the intensity that life naturally brings.

Why sound healing? Most of us are stuck in fight or flight these days and have trouble quieting the mind, soothing anxieties, and calming the body. These instruments and the way Dawn plays them allows the mind to relax so your body can activate the parasympathetic nervous system & rest, digest, and heal itself.

She has curated a method to lift and transmute emotions, experiences, and beliefs using the instruments and energetics. Participants report dramatic effects and say over many approaches they have tried, sound healing with Dawn helps the most. Dawn utilizes her sense as an empath, has worked weekly with grief counseling groups, and acts as a conduit bringing new perspective with your highest good in mind.

After this grounding and beautiful experience, we will be prepared to take a Shamanic Journey for a Soul Retrieval with Kim Robinson of The Venus Studio AVL (www.venusstudioavl.com)

Learn the basics of Shamanic Journeying and do a Soul Retrieval!

We will learn how to practice shamanic journeying on your own, where you will meet your guide for shamanic journeys. Then we will do a journey together in group to go to the Chamber of Grace to receive a gift – a soul retrieval.

What is Soul Retrieval? As our souls journey through time and space, we may lose parts of our soul along the way. If you feel like there is just something missing in your life, you feel confused or lost, or are having mental fog or have an unexplained sadness then you may be ready to retrieve a lost soul part. Soul parts can go missing for a variety of reasons, but here are a few ideas: when we are holding on to heavy belief systems that no longer serve us, have had unresolved emotional healing or trauma, ancestral trauma, soul contracts, or birth trauma. We will receive and integrate this beautiful new soul part and share in a sacred space group.

How will this Sound Journey and Soul Retrieval Workshop benefit me?

-You will have a deep sense of relaxation, which allows the mind to relax so your body can activate the parasympathetic nervous system & rest, digest, and heal itself.

-You will walk away with the tools to practice a shamanic journey on your own

-You will gain insight into what soul part is calling out to you to be recognized and integrated

-You will leave feeling renewed and joyful

-You will feel empowered after learning new soul gifts

What should I bring?

-You can bring a yoga mat or picnic blanket to lie down on, but we will have them to provide as well. Just in case you wanted your own.

-You may bring a picnic lunch to stay after and enjoy a picnic lunch on the beautiful grounds

ReadWNC Series: The Ballad of Frankie Silver
Oct 4 @ 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm
online w/ Western North Carolina Historical Association

ReadWNC Series: The Ballad of Frankie Silver

Our ReadWNC series concludes Tuesday, October 4 with author Sharyn McCrumb discussing the true events behind her novel The Ballad of Frankie Silver. In this series, authors and historians explore the facts behind the fiction in books centered in WNC. We encourage you to read the books in advance and bring your own questions to the discussion. You can find all three books at Malaprop’s Bookstore here in Asheville. This event airs live via Zoom, and will be recorded for later viewing.

The Ballad of Frankie Silver is one of McCrumb’s Ballad novels – “set in the Southern mountains, weaving together the legends, natural wonders and contemporary issues of Appalachia. Each story is built around a theme, intended to express an overall idea” according to the author. This novel, set in Burke County, tells the story of the young Frankie Silver, hanged for a murder she may not have committed in 1833. McCrumb notes that this tale involves mountain justice, frontier families, and a contrast between the mountain and lowland South.

About the Presenter:

Sharyn McCrumb is an award-winning Southern writer, best known for her Appalachian “Ballad” novels, set in the North Carolina/Tennessee mountains, including the New York Times Best Sellers She Walks These Hills and The Rosewood Casket, which deal with the issue of the vanishing wilderness; The Ballad of Frankie Silver and The Ballad of Tom Dooley, exploring the true stories behind two Appalachian murder balladsand The Songcatcher, a genealogy in music, tracing the author‘s family from 18th century Scotland to the present by following a Scots Ballad through the generations. Ghost Riders, an account of the Civil War in the mountains of western North Carolina, won the Wilma Dykeman Award for Literature given by the East Tennessee Historical Society and the national Audie Award for Best Recorded Novel. Her books have been named New York Times and Los Angeles Times Notable Books.
