Mission Health is accepting applications from throughout the community for the Kesha Young Health
Careers Scholarship , with the aim of supporting the education goals for high school seniors and college
students of color from Western North Carolina who are pursuing careers in healthcare.
For more than 25 years, Mission Health has been awarding the Kesha Young Health Careers Scholarship,
with more than $1 million given to make college more affordable for high school seniors and college
students of color from Western North Carolina who are pursuing careers in healthcare. The scholarship
is named in honor of Kesha Young, a 22-year-old, bi-racial woman who was born with mental and
physical disabilities and underwent multiple surgeries at Mission Hospital. Kesha died just months
before she was scheduled to earn her high school diploma. Despite her health struggles, Kesha was
described by her adoptive parents as embodying the characteristics that are vital to how healthcare
team members engage with patients, families and visitors, with a strong spirit, warm smile and positive
encouragement.
At Mission Health, we recognize that having a diverse workforce, especially in healthcare, is very
important to provide the best possible care to our patients and communities. This is integral to who we
are as a company. Our mission statement is based around recognizing and affirming the unique and
intrinsic worth of each individual: “Above all else, we are committed to the care and improvement of
human life.”
The completed application, along with all additional materials, must be received by 5 p.m. on Friday,
April 14th, 2023 for consideration. Recipients will be notified in early May and invited to a reception at
Mission Hospital on Wednesday June 7th.

A Walk Down the Point Lookout Greenway (2 miles on pavement) – Dan Pierce
Join a Park naturalist on a moderate hike and see Hickory Nut Gorge come alive as spring wildflowers emerge along the trails. The journey will take you along the Hickory Nut Falls Trail and down the Four Seasons Trail as you learn to identify some of our gorgeous spring blooms. Transportation will be provided back to the top lot.
Join us in the Museum’s Windgate Foundation Atrium for a Gentle Flow Yoga class, followed by a social time with free coffee or tea and a fresh-baked pastry in the rooptop Perspective Café. This class features gentle stretching and strengthening aimed to restore the body and mind, with a special focus on breathing, body awareness, and mindset care. All-levels are welcome. Please bring your own mat. Reserve your spot soon; there is only capacity for 20 per class. Registration is required.

About the Instructor: Alaina has been teaching regular yoga and meditation classes since 2016. She was certified at the 200-hour level at the Asheville Yoga Center and then, at the 300-level at The Breathing Space in Blacksburg, Virginia. Alaina is passionate about sharing a different approach focused on grounding, breathing, and spinal health. Alaina prioritizes making her classes accessible and friendly to all.
Need to unwind after a long, stressful work week? Then join us in the Museum’s atrium on Saturday mornings for Yoga for All Bodies | Yoga for Mental Health, followed by social time with free coffee, tea, and a fresh-baked pastry at the rooftop Perspective Café.

Yoga with goats…it is just as ridiculous and amazing as it sounds. You can expect to grin, giggle, move, and flow alongside the sweetest little snuggly socialites. The goats may pull your attention away from your movement practice from time to time but they are the most adorable anchors to the present moment and can spark pure joy.
Disconnect with stress and connect with loving, social & adorable goats! This is a unique opportunity to spend time in a cozy, open-air barn and let the busyness of the world melt away for a moment. You can expect a beginner-friendly yoga class that is easy to follow…and rejoin if you find yourself distracted throughout.
Wear loose fitting clothing, long pants, shirts with sleeves, and clothes that you don’t mind getting a bit dirty. Please plan on bringing your own yoga mat or you may rent a mat in advance for $5. These events will be held rain or shine. In the case of inclement weather, we’ll move under the cover of the open air milking barn. Don’t forget to bring an open mind and adventurous spirit! It is sure to be an experience to remember!
Join us for the final installment of our Spring Gardening Series with Laura Ruby, Summer Garden Management at Reems Creek Nursery!
Our final workshop will close with a session to discuss succession plantings for summer, summer weed, pest management, and preserving the harvest (what to do with all those tomatoes, and more!) We’ll share some tips for keeping your body and energy up throughout the season to make the best of your garden and have ample time to answer any questions as you start the gardens back up for the season.

Kae Mance has terminal cancer. After receiving her diagnosis, she chose to take control of her care. She also made a conscious decision to be completely open and honest with family and friends about her prognosis. She has captured important aspects of her experience in her book entitled Living Well to Die Well – A Guide for Terminally Ill People and Their Loved Ones.
Death is a phenomenon we will all experience. In her presentation, as in her book, Kae demonstrates that impending death need not be an uncomfortable topic.
Everyone, including doctors, nurses, health care professionals, hospice workers, family, friends, anyone interacting with people who are facing death (which is all of us), can benefit from learning how to be genuinely supportive and how to interact in ways that empower those with terminal diagnoses or serious illnesses to find the joy and peace to be had near the end of life.
Kae will discuss:
● The best advice for enabling choices for ourselves.
● Taking control of our own care and how to support a loved one to do the same• Staying connected and how to best do that.
● The difference between actively living and actively dying.
● To-do lists for everyone, including choosing how we want to die, things to be done before death, and ideas for passing down memories.
● How to support caregivers.
● Dealing with grief from both sides.
● What to do and what not to do regarding people with cancer and/or terminal illness.
Kae’s book is available on Amazon.com and has been listed as the #1 New Release in Hospice Care. Feel free to bring your copy of her book for Kae to sign after the presentation.

We are seeking volunteers to assist us in our small after school program for children in West Asheville in low-income housing. We provide a safe and nourishing environment, healthy snacks, and creative activities. Our program currently meets during the school year on most Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 3:00-5:00pm. You may volunteer for one or two days a week.
Volunteer Responsibilities:
- Assist with serving snacks
- Interact with children during activity time
- Supervise games and outdoor free time
- For people with background in education, there is also an opportunity to assist with curriculum development and program planning and administration
Requirements:
- Background check
- Orientation booklets will be provided
- Masks are required if unvaccinated

According to Google My Business: -Makes it easy for your business to be in one, easy-to-use location. -Puts your business info on Search, Maps and Google+ so that customers can find you, no matter what device they’re using. -Gives customers the right info at the right time, whether that be driving directions to your business in Maps, hours of operations in Search or a phone number they can click to call you on mobile phones. -Helps build a loyal fan base. Customers can show their appreciation with ratings and reviews, use the +1 button to endorse your content, and re-share your Google+ posts across the web. This seminar is good for creating your Google My Business site and for those that “already” have Google My Business that want to move up in Google.

Elaine Auyoung, associate professor of English at Univeristy of Minnesota College of Liberal Arts, will present a lecture, “Literary Study and Learning to Notice,” at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 4 in UNC Asheville’s Laurel Forum, Karpen Hall.
Auyoung is the author of “When Fiction Feels Real,” which examines the relationship between novelistic technique and literary experience. She is working on two other book projects currently.
Her talk will engage psychological research on learning to offer fresh accounts of how literary critics can reduce barriers to learning, of the distinctive forms of knowledge that literature and literary study provide, and of how psychological perspectives can help critics move beyond our disciplinary blind spots.

Mission Health is accepting applications from throughout the community for the Kesha Young Health
Careers Scholarship , with the aim of supporting the education goals for high school seniors and college
students of color from Western North Carolina who are pursuing careers in healthcare.
For more than 25 years, Mission Health has been awarding the Kesha Young Health Careers Scholarship,
with more than $1 million given to make college more affordable for high school seniors and college
students of color from Western North Carolina who are pursuing careers in healthcare. The scholarship
is named in honor of Kesha Young, a 22-year-old, bi-racial woman who was born with mental and
physical disabilities and underwent multiple surgeries at Mission Hospital. Kesha died just months
before she was scheduled to earn her high school diploma. Despite her health struggles, Kesha was
described by her adoptive parents as embodying the characteristics that are vital to how healthcare
team members engage with patients, families and visitors, with a strong spirit, warm smile and positive
encouragement.
At Mission Health, we recognize that having a diverse workforce, especially in healthcare, is very
important to provide the best possible care to our patients and communities. This is integral to who we
are as a company. Our mission statement is based around recognizing and affirming the unique and
intrinsic worth of each individual: “Above all else, we are committed to the care and improvement of
human life.”
The completed application, along with all additional materials, must be received by 5 p.m. on Friday,
April 14th, 2023 for consideration. Recipients will be notified in early May and invited to a reception at
Mission Hospital on Wednesday June 7th.
