Throughout the month of July, you can enjoy a great local craft beverage and help support MANNA’s mission to provide food to families across WNC.
Many of us are busy planning summer vacations, gatherings, and picnics ahead of July. But for over 100,000 Western North Carolina residents busy trying to make ends meet to provide for their most basic needs, that kind of celebration is out of the question.
That is why the nationally recognized WNC beer scene is collaborating again, and raising the stakes, to bring awareness to the issue of hunger in Western North Carolina. Over twenty local breweries are joining forces to help support MANNA FoodBank’s mission to end hunger for thousands of families across WNC through the 2nd annual Hops for Hunger campaign, July 1st – 31st.
Hops for Hunger is made possible through support from Asheville Ale Trail, and MANNA’s annual sponsors: Preserve Communities, Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Resort, Anurja Interactive, The Cantina at Historic Biltmore Village, Mast General Store, and Lamar Advertising.
By highlighting these and other works, Brevard Music Center is presenting some of Bernstein’s greatest output and showing a wonderful variety of his music that is at the core of American classical music experience. We spend so much time celebrating the works of European masters like Beethoven, Mozart, Mahler, and Dvôrak. And those works all deserve to be celebrated. But they must stand alongside Bernstein, Copland, and Gershwin—these masters gave American classical music its voice.
It’s wonderful for Brevard to be joining in with orchestras and institutions all around the world in celebrating the birth of one of the most compelling musicians of our time…or any other time.

Bastille Day: A French Baroque Celebration!

Bask in the rich sonority of 18th-century violins and violas da gamba with harpsichord while contemplating a few of the enigmas of musical life in France before and after the revolution: Why are there so few original French harpsichords in existence today? Were any musicians beheaded during the storming of the Bastille? And who murdered the famous violinist Jean-Marie Leclair?
ABCs’ artistic director, Gail Ann Schroeder, viola da gamba, will be joined by Jeanne Johnson and Margaret Humphrey, Baroque violins; Webster Williams, viola da gamba; and Barbara Weiss, harpsichord, to perform works by Leclair, Marais and Couperin le Grand.

Brevard Music Center (BMC) will screen the classic American movie musical West Side Story with a full symphony orchestra on Saturday, July 14 at 8:30 PM at Whittington-Pfohl Auditorium. Conducting the Brevard Sinfonia in Leonard Bernstein’s reverent and iconic score will be BMC alumnus Jayce Ogren. Patrons can enjoy a 7:30 PM pre-concert discussion, Bernstein & Justice, held in conjunction with Transylvania’s Project Empathy and presented by Joseph Horowitz, a former New York Times music critic, pioneer in thematic interdisciplinary classical music programming, and one of the most prominent and widely published authorities on American music. Falling, a solo exhibition of contemporary paintings by Michael Francis Reagan, opens at Grovewood Gallery on Saturday, June 9, with an artist’s reception from 2-5pm (free and open to the public). This show will feature acrylic paintings on canvas from Reagan’s popular Falling Series, inspired by a haunting memory of a childhood encounter with a mourning dove that had fallen from the sky. This exhibition will remain on view through Sunday, July 15, 2018.
Reagan received a degree in art and American literature and an MFA in painting from the University of Arkansas. Aside from his paintings, Reagan has established himself as one of American’s leading mapmakers. As a freelance illustrator, he has been employed by major publications such as National Geographic, The New Yorker, Smithsonian magazine, Travel and Leisure, and The New York Times. Reagan’s bird paintings and environmental maps continue to be commissioned by Audubon, The Nature Conservancy, The National Parks of America, and other conservation organizations.

One of the most celebrated and respected performers of her generation, Jenny Lewis got her start as the dynamic frontwoman of influential LA group Rilo Kiley in 1998. She has since released three albums under her name, most recently 2014’s The Voyager. In addition to her solo work, she was a member of The Postal Service, part of the duo, Jenny and Johnny, as well as the lead vocalist for Nice As Fuck.
Lewis has collaborated with Beck, Elvis Costello, Ryan Adams and M. Ward, among others. She has also written music for films such as the musical/drama, Song One, starring Anne Hathaway and Very Good Girls starring Dakota Fanning and Elizabeth Olsen.

Manna Food Distribution every third Tuesday at 2:30pm
Most people know that our bodies need fat for insulation, energy, and protection, but our cultural relationship with this macronutrient has been tenuous at best for over fifty years. Even cooks who have embraced putting natural fats back into their foods are often still confused about sources, uses, and safety. “Fat is making a comeback,” says Asheville-based food writer and chef Meredith Leigh, “but we still have a long way to go.” Leigh serves as Education and Outreach Coordinator at Living Web Farms, where she will teach a class all about fat as an essential element of cooking, this coming July 17 th at 6pm at the farm in Mills River. Leigh shares that there are still people who regard fat as a food to fear, and then there are people who have allowed fat back into their cooking, on a limited level. “It’s not uncommon to run into cooks who are no longer afraid, but are only using two types of fat in their kitchen, because someone told them that was the only way to eat.” It turns out, there’s a lot more to the story about fat, and a host of other reasons to let our relationship with it mature and deepen.
