“Shine and Dine” on the railway! We cordially invite you to hop on board The Carolina Shine, GSMR’s All-Adult First Class Moonshine Car! We will be proudly serving hand crafted, triple-distilled, craft moonshine. Some of the smoothest tasting moonshine in the Carolinas!
Offered on the Nantahala Gorge excursion, this shine and dine experience begins in a renovated First Class train fleet car, The Carolina Shine. The interior features copper lined walls filled with the history of moonshining in North Carolina. Learn about the proud tradition that the Appalachians established when bootlegging was an acceptable way of life and local home brews were the best in town. Read about Swain County’s very own Major Redmond, the most famous mountain moonshine outlaw of the 19th century.
Once your appetite for knowledge is satisfied, enjoy sample tastings of flavors like Apple Pie, Blackberry, Blueberry, Cherry, Peach, and Strawberry moonshine. If the samples are not enough, there will be plenty of Moonshine infused cocktails like Copper Cola or Moonshiner’s Mimosa available for purchase. GSMR is excited to feature multiple craft NC based distilleries to serve our guests only the best! Each jar is handcrafted and authentically infused with real fruit, the way moonshine was meant to be made. Ride in style on the historic Great Smoky Mountains Railroad aboard your very own restored Caboose. These are great for family reunions, birthday parties, private meetings, corporate field trips or just any time!
Our cabooses accommodate up to 15 people with seating on the main level and in the cupola. (And, remember, babies are people, too!) The cabooses feature heat, private bathrooms, windows that can be opened, and open air vestibules at each end for unobstructed views. Advanced reservations are required and availability of caboose rentals are limited.
A platter of cheese and crackers, and an assortment of 15 bottled Coca-Cola products are included. Plus, the caboose is the only place where you can bring your own food and drink (please, no alcohol) in picnic baskets or coolers.

The community—which included the Smith-McDowell House and Fernihurst mansion—originally incorporated into a town to prevent unwanted development (particularly from the Vanderbilts). |
This district was where it was happening in the Gilded Age of Hendersonville. Starting in 1879, the train depot brought steam engines and hordes of summer visitors, which in turn attracted drays, hustle, handsome hotels and overnight boarding houses, shoot-outs, candy stores, a lively livestock yard, and a thriving neighborhood.

Join the Swannanoa Valley Museum for an evening of haunted history in Black Mountain! In these outdoor walking tours through Black Mountain’s downtown historic district, visitors will learn about the humorous, haunting and harrowing history of the Swannanoa Valley while being visited by some of its most famous spirits. This event, which is a fundraiser for the museum, will highlight the town’s many tragedies and triumphs- and the many ghosts, friendly and frustrated, born from these events.

Dog owners and pet lovers are invited to bring their pups and friends to tour the businesses of the Historic 7th Avenue as they participate in the 2nd Annual Historic 7th Avenue District Pup Crawl presented by Hunter Subaru. The event will be held on Saturday, October 23, 2021 and benefits Blue Ridge Humane Society. Hosted by Guidon Brewing, the Brandy Bar, Southern Appalachian Brewing, Triskelion Brewing Company, and White Duck Taco Shop, each stop will feature a pet giveaway or treat as well as an interactive activity hosted by a local pet-centric business, such as paw print painting, paw reading, agility course, ask a trainer, and more! Crawlers may also enjoy specials just for the Pup Crawl at the host venues.
To see all the activities and to participate, purchase your “Pupport” online at www.blueridgehumane.org/pup. As crawlers travel around 7th Avenue they’ll receive a stamp at each location as they participate in each activity. When their pupport is full they’ll be entered into a grand prize drawing for a basket of merchandise and gift certificates from the host locations and more. Pupports purchased by October 10 are only $15. Last minute and onsite purchases are $20. Each pupport includes most activities and giveaways at each stop for participating pets, with some activities offered by donation. Proceeds from the event, as well as a portion of sales from the host locations, will provide rescue services for animals in Henderson County.
