Frostbite 5K, 10K and 1 Mile Fun Run

Join us for the 31st Annual Frostbite, the oldest and largest footrace in Henderson County! This in-person running event (with a virtual option) offers a 5K, 10K, and 1 Mile Fun Run, so there’s something for the entire family. The Frostbite races begin and finish at the Lelia Patterson Center in Fletcher, North Carolina. Both the 10k and 5k courses provide views of Hutch Mountain and are on hilly to challenging terrain, with some moderate inclines. The flat and fast 1-mile course, makes this premier racing event an opportunity for all running levels and ages to participate together.

Greenville Swamp Rabbits  vs.  Savannah Ghost Pirates

 

The Greenville Swamp Rabbits are much more than a professional hockey franchise playing in Upstate South Carolina; it is truly Greenville’s hockey team. Formerly known as the Road Warriors, the club rebranded to the Swamp Rabbits on August 26, 2015 in an effort to really ingrain itself in the fabric of the community. The name is inherently Greenville – specific to the city and unique in the sports world.

It’s the electrifying energy and unstoppable passion of Swamp Rabbits fans inside The Well combined with the award-winning game presentation that make attending a Swamp Rabbits game the BEST fan experience in the ECHL! From the moment you step inside the arena, you’ll find FREE concourse activities for the whole family, including sign-making, temporary tattoos, interactive games, music and there’s always a good chance you’ll run into the Swamp Rabbits mascot Stomper! Throughout the season, fans can also expect a lineup of special theme nights and exciting giveaways.

Beginner Youth Tennis Classes

Hendersonville Racquet Club

Registration is now open for the next session of youth tennis classes starting March 3rd at Hendersonville Racquet Club.  Kids are put in groups based on age and ability with seven levels available.  The session is six weeks long and is $79 for members or $99 for non-members for one class a week.  Two days a week (12 sessions) is $139/169.

“Our youth tennis program has something for any child who wants to play.  From beginner to high performance player, we put them into situations where they will be challenged and can succeed while having a fun time doing it.” stated HRC Junior Tennis Academy Tennis Pro Cre Still.

Hendersonville Racquet Club is a six acre complex that includes 6 outdoor tennis courts, 3 arena tennis courts, four racquetball courts, 7 pickleball courts, an outdoor swimming pool, fitness center, group fitness room and outdoor leisure area by Shaw’s Creek and pond.

Experience some of the best road running in Asheville with The Flying Squirrel Ten Miler, Asheville’s premier 10 Mile road race. Enjoy the ease and convenience of a road race with the spectacular views and seclusion of a mountain race. The race starts and finishes just blocks from downtown Asheville and then promptly takes runners on the winding roads of Town Mountain. Participants will enjoy shaded mountain roads typically only used by locals, such as the beautiful Sunset Drive and Patton Mountain Road. One thing about The Flying Squirrel Ten Miler is sure: you’ve got to “earn” those views. The Southern Appalachians are hilly and so is The Flying Squirrel Ten Miler.

Course

The course features five miles of gradual uphill and five miles of gradual downhill with a bit of flat at the beginning and end. Runners will gain over 1,400′ and lose over 1,400′ throughout the 10 mile long course. Check out our Course Description for a course map, elevation profile, and turn-by-turn instructions.

Wildlife

Asheville is home to an amazing diversity of wildlife, including white squirrels, black bears, and fox. Yes, there are white squirrels that live on the course that sometimes make an appearance. A portion of race proceeds to go towards conserving the endangered Carolina Flying Squirrel.

Post-Race: Once you catch your breath you’ll enjoy post-race refreshments.

There are several great places to grab a late breakfast or early lunch within a short walk of the Finish Zone including Liberty Coffee (fresh and healthy seasonal plates and full coffee bar – all Ten Mile participants get one free coffee!), City Bakery (classic Asheville bakery and cafe serving up sandwiches and soups), and Pulp + Sprout (juice bar and vegan cafe).

Hendersonville Racquet Club is offering several levels of pickleball training starting February 22nd.  Try Pickleball is a five week series of classes for adult beginner pickleball players. Pickleball 201 is a four week class for 2.5 to 3.0 level players who want to improve.  Pickleball 301 is a four week class for 3.0 to 3.5 level players.

All classes are taught by HRC Pickleball Pros.  Try Pickleball starts February 28th on either Tuesdays 2-3 or Fridays 6-7. The cost is $120 for the five weeks and includes five hours of instruction, a Paddletek pickleball paddle and a pickleball.  Pickleball 201 and 301 start February 22nd Wednesdays at 1pm and 2:30pm, respectively.  The cost is $80 for HRC members and $120 for nonmembers.

“Pickleball is the latest racquet sport craze. It combines elements of several racquet sports including: tennis, ping pong and badminton. It intensifies hand coordination and increases volley abilities. ALL WHILE HAVING FUN!” stated Certified Pickleball Professional Cre Still.

HRC Adult Pickleball Training

Hendersonville Racquet Club is offering several levels of pickleball training starting February 22nd.  Try Pickleball is a five week series of classes for adult beginner pickleball players. Pickleball 201 is a four week class for 2.5 to 3.0 level players who want to improve.  Pickleball 301 is a four week class for 3.0 to 3.5 level players.

All classes are taught by HRC Pickleball Pros.  Try Pickleball starts February 28th on either Tuesdays 2-3 or Fridays 6-7. The cost is $120 for the five weeks and includes five hours of instruction, a Paddletek pickleball paddle and a pickleball.  Pickleball 201 and 301 start February 22nd Wednesdays at 1pm and 2:30pm, respectively.  The cost is $80 for HRC members and $120 for nonmembers.

“Pickleball is the latest racquet sport craze. It combines elements of several racquet sports including: tennis, ping pong and badminton. It intensifies hand coordination and increases volley abilities. ALL WHILE HAVING FUN!” stated Certified Pickleball Professional Cre Still.

Hendersonville Racquet Club is a six acre complex that includes 5 dedicated outdoor pickleball courts, 6 outdoor tennis courts, 3 indoor tennis courts, four racquetball courts, an outdoor swimming pool, fitness center, group fitness room and outdoor leisure area by Shaw’s Creek and pond.

Blue Ridge Roller Derby’s Home Team Championships: The Wreckoning

Blue Ridge Roller Derby is pumped to have all of their incredible fans join them for their inaugural Home Team Championships on Saturday, Feb 25th at the Smoky Mountain Event Center. Come see the Black Balsam Batties and Copperhead Outlaws battle for the champs for a full hour game. And they’re thrilled to have their guest, the Hard Knox All Stars, from Knoxville, TN, join them and play their home team The Swarm! Remember you get your tickets at the door so get them before the first whistle. Spread the word! All are welcome, this is a family friendly event.

Tickets at the door (3pm): $10 for Adults; $5 for ages 12-18; FREE for kids 11 and under.

Boxing at the Depot will host the 2023 South Carolina Golden Gloves Boxing State Championship on February 23-25 at The Memorial Arena at Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium (385 North Church Street, Spartanburg, SC 29303). Golden Gloves has been contested in the Carolinas since 1934 and nationally since 1928. Boxers will compete for State Championship belts, All-State certificates signed by South Carolina Governor Henry Mc Master, and spots on South Carolina’s Elite High Performance Boxing Team. There will be three competition divisions for men and women: Elite Open (18-40 years old; 11+ prior USA Boxing bouts); Novice (18-40 years old; 0-10 prior USA Boxing bouts); and Masters (40+ years old). Winners of the Elite Open Division will join Team South Carolina and travel to Birmingham, Alabama to compete in the Southeast Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions against the champions from Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, and Tennessee. The winner of the Southeast Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions will then compete in the Golden Gloves National Championship. The following Olympic weight classes will be contested at this year’s tournament:

Flyweight (112 lbs.), Featherweight (125 lbs.), Light Welterweight (139 lbs.), Welterweight (147 lbs.), Light Middleweight (156 lbs.), Middle-weight (165 lbs.), Light Heavyweight (176 lbs.), Cruiserweight (189 lbs.), Heavyweight (203 lbs.), and Super Heavyweight (203+ lbs.).
