Jeff Michels (Rhythm guitar, vocals) began songwriting as soon as he strummed his first guitar at age 16 and hasn’t stopped. With influences as diverse as the Beatles, Dylan, David Bowie and Neil Young, Jeff’s brew of socially conscious Folk Rock originals and cover tunes offer a wide spectrum of listening experiences.
Paired with Steve Kirkland (electric guitar) and Jim Robertson (percussion, vocals), Jeff’s music lends itself to sonic re-interpretation of Rock and Roll.

Matt Walsh is a singer, guitarist and songwriter from Statesville NC who performs solo or with his backup band around 200 shows a year throughout the southeast and beyond. His sound is influenced by anyone from Link Wray, Howlin’ Wolf, Prince, Black Sabbath or Pete Rock among many other musicians and styles of music. His primary focus is making original music and mixing his roots with new ideas rather than replicating them. The result reflects an exciting blend of many genres of music – early electric and hill country Blues, Rock, Rockabilly, Soul, Country, Garage Rock, Hip-Hop and Psychedelia among others. His exposure to music came first came from his mother through her love of Motown. In his youth, he was fascinated with various types of music and was always anxious when he heard a sound that was different or foreign to his ear. When he was 9 his mother took him to a Prince concert and Matt knew he wanted to be a musician.

Fifty years in music! Yes, it seems like quite an accomplishment. But if you look a little closer, you’ll find a boy fairly unconcerned with issues and events that most people think of as the future. You’ll see a guy who’s wondering what he did wrong to have to spend his high school years marching to English class in a military school uniform. Picture him putting down the rifle he was issued and picking up a guitar for the first time, and the look on his face when, at last, something made sense. And then, you might peer into the psyche of a young fella who loved the music of words enough to postpone the last stages of an art degree to follow his cellular desire to learn about that love and begin to understand. He understood that he was of an age to be sent against his will to southeast Asia to become a soldier. He had a different idea. Songs and the need to write them… Concerts made up of those songs and the joy of performing them in front of listening, responsive people.

These are the endeavors that propelled this young fella to follow his heart and refine his focus. Bigger and bigger audiences were soon to take notice and embrace this artist who so selflessly engaged with them. 250 shows a year in those early years. 19 albums and collaborations as evidence of his commitment. A little broadway, a touch of acting, some producing and “50 years goes.” Formative times with the horses in Nova Scotia, a decade or so in the Caribbean with the Rastas, a stubborn adherence to the sound of bronze strings on rosewood, an abiding love of the earth and all her daily miracles; these are a few of the colors on his palette that inform the man he has now become. You will discover a certain reverence and a sardonic humor in equal measure. You will now find an outward maturity and an inner, youthful exuberance combined in an intense and contagious love of life. When asked if he ever gets weary of singing “Sunshine” or “Shanty” or any of his earlier compositions, he replies, “Every night is a new night, every crowd is a different context and every performance feels like the first time.”

So, whether it’s a “Toys For Tots” Christmas Show for forty thousand people or a house concert down the street for 25 friends and neighbors and a couple of dogs, you receive the best from this man–every time he takes the stage. These are honest emotions to which wings are attached. An authentic story of art for the sake of art. This is original music based in history and tradition. Pianos, mandolins and fiddles…harmonicas, stand-up bass and lots of guitars; the recordings and the concerts both create an environment and an atmosphere that make his singing seem effortless and a spontaneous natural occurrence. And all of this without much concern for the future.

Peace, Love and Understanding through the gift of Music.

Andy Frasco & the U.N.

It felt like time to switch gears.

In 2017, Andy Frasco reached a fork in the road. Renowned for a jubilant jambalaya of rule-breaking rock n roll his career kept rolling ahead at full steam. To date, he had released three independent albums, chronicled a German gig in front of 15,000 screaming fans on the recent live opus Songs from the Road, made jaws drop at festivals such as Grandoozy, Firefly, Mountain Jam, Summer Camp, Rock Am Ring, Rock Im Park and Electric Forest, generated millions of streams, launched Andy Frasco’s World Saving Podcast, and performed at festivals alongside icons such as Peter Frampton, Gary Clark Jr., The Revivalists, Snoop Dog, Dr. Dog, Joe Walsh and Kendrick Lamar, to name a few.

After a string of wild shows (and wilder nights) on tour somewhere in the heart of America, one morning sounded a very loud wakeup call for the singer, songwriter, performer, and namesake of Andy Frasco & The U.N.

“I woke up after a five-day bender on cocaine,” he recalls. “This relationship I was in didn’t work out. I bought a house in the Midwest to be close to a girl, but she didn’t trust me. I wouldn’t trust me either, because I was fucking chicks and doing drugs every night on the road. I would take ecstasy just to get out of bed. I was sleep deprived, losing all of my friendships, and fucking overworked. I decided to make a change in my life. I realized that I’m getting older; I couldn’t only be the party guy. I wanted to chronicle my life. I wanted to capture my feelings. I wanted substance in my life and music. I decided to take a step back from this wild life for a second and reevaluate, so I could genuinely enjoy the ride I’m on for the long haul.”

The ride ramps up on his third full-length album, the aptly titled Change of Pace. Andy approached recording from a new vantage point encouraged by iconic Widespread Panic bassist and producer Dave Schools.

At sessions in a remote Sonoma County mountain studio in a converted chicken coop of all places, Schools challenged him as a songwriter and lyricist.

“Dave sat me down and asked, ‘Who do you want to be? What do you want to be remembered by?’,” recalls Andy. “I never really thought of it that way. He dialed things back for me. He’s become a huge inspiration to me as a musician and a friend. The album began there.”

Cutting six songs with Dave, he embarked on something of a “studio tour” to finish Change of Pace. He tapped the talents of Ben Ellman in New Orleans, Charles Goodan in Los Angeles, and Caleb Hawley in New York at Lady Gaga’s Atomic Studios.

As a result, the songs reflect the respective regions.

“There’s a grungy Bourbon street feel, hard-working and moody New York energy, and that indie California vibe,” he goes on. “I’m a traveler at the end of the day. I became a musician to travel and give people therapy through music. As part of this revelation, I realized I don’t need to stay at home when I’m off tour. I decided since I’m most comfortable on the road, so I might as well make this record on the road.”

The first single “Up/Down” slips from a simmering beat and bass line into a horn-driven swoon. Produced by Goodan, its undeniable refrain proves immediately irresistible as he sings, “Your love is up and down.”

“I was just getting through my relationship with that girl from Arkansas,” Andy goes on. “One day, she was happy. The next day, she wasn’t. I speak on the bipolar nature of a relationship. This was the first time I felt that. Normally, I’d be in the next town before things got any further. The song came from an outside point-of-a-view by a guy who never had a real relationship before this in his life!”

Meanwhile, the boisterous “Waiting Game” features Schools’ touch and thrives on delightful proclamations such as “I wanna be the man you can tell your momma about!” The theatrical piano chords, cinematic accordion, and barroom chant delivery on “Don’t let the Haters get you down” takes dead aim at “online trolls talking shit from their parents basements.”

The title track “Change of Pace” gallops ahead on tambourine and organ as Andy’s voice stretches to the heavens and back on the admission, “I’m looking for change of pace. Then, I’ll be on my way.”

“Everyone has an idea of how you should live your life,” he states. “If you’re dealing with something that you’re not into, try something the complete opposite. Instead of always pondering what you could do tomorrow, do it today.”

In the end, this change elevates Andy to a new level.

“I’d love for people to connect to the songs in addition to the live show,” he leaves off. “I’m a philosopher and a musician at the end of the day. I want to emulate those aspects in my work. I’m also just a guy trying to find happiness like everyone else is. It’s about being okay with the lows, not getting too high with the highs, and being comfortable in your own skin.”

The Trongone Band

Hailing from Richmond, VA, The Trongone Band is touring in support of their 2017 debut album, “Keys to the House”, released on Harmonized Records. With a sound that Paste Magazine likens to the “freak-outs of My Morning Jacket with the Muscle Shoals-inspired Leslie speakers and The Band’s narrative storytelling”, The Trongone Band is turning heads and making an impact on the Southern Rock ‘n’ Soul and Americana scenes.

Formed by brothers Andrew and Johnny Trongone with father John Sr on bass, The Trongone Band (tron-GO-knee) has grown from a family affair to a full on touring machine with the addition of keyboardist Ben “Wolfe” White and bassist Chip Hale. In the words of Live for Live Music, “the quartet has come together to create an old-school and all-in-the-family sound reminiscent of The Allman Brothers while still keeping it fresh with their cutting edge original compositions that also infuse funk and blues into the mix.”

Keeping with the homegrown vibe, the band nestled into the woods outside of RVA, tapping into Montrose Recording’s Flickinger console, one of only seven remaining in the world. Known as the console that revolutionized the recording industry in the 60s & 70s, the Flickinger provided the warm sounds that turned into “Keys to the House” and brought to life what MusicFestNews described as “imagery of boxcar drifters, rolling hills and dirt roads that are easy to close your eyes and get lost in”.

Summer and Fall of 2017 saw The Trongone Band taking “Keys to the House” on the road while touring in support of stalwarts including Umphrey’s McGee, Reckless Kelly, American Aquarium and Cris Jacobs, Having graced the stages of Virginia’s Roosterwalk and FloydFest, Tennessee’s Riverbend Music Festival, The Allman Brothers’ Peach Festival in Pennsylvania, Atlanta’s Sweetwater 420 Fest and Macon’s “Big House Presents Summer Jam”, the band took the show abroad and completed their first full European Tour to close out 2018. This four-piece ensemble may not all be related, but with a chemistry so emphatically discernible, it’s fair to call them brothers.

Hustle Souls

Hustle Souls is an Asheville, NC based groove-centric but emotionally driven soul/rock band with a lust for songwriting and fervid live performance. With years of relentless touring, sold out shows and major festival appearances, the band’s infectious modern meets vintage sound has earned them a reputation as one of the East Coast’s most promising acts. After releasing a live video series in 2017, the band was approached by gold and platinum mixer and producer Eric “Mixerman” Sarafin (Ben Harper, Pharcyde etc.) about making a record. In February 2018 Hustle Souls released their debut full-length album “Color” to a sold out crowd and are currently touring from Atlanta to Boston in support of the 10 song LP.

“Their blend of jazz, pop, and rock is inventive and captivating. Their lines are on point and their sound is tight, creating space for Billy Litz’s rabbit hole musicianship. And you can ******* dance to it. Friday night was a revelation, I’m already looking forward to the next one.” – Caleb Calhoun

Domestic Blissss 2019 Exhibit opening at Flood Gallery
Apr 27 all-day
Flood Gallery Fine Art Center

Featuring the artwork of Western North Carolina artists Connie Bostic, Brenda Coates, Linda Larsen, Marya Roland and Alice Sebrell, AKA The Faux Book Club.

The Faux Book Club was loosely formed some twenty years ago. Yet to this day, the artists haven’t been able to agree upon a single book to read together. Instead they’ve pivoted their attention to their top priority: making art. They concentrate especially on contemporary art that is more engaged in asking questions than having answers, more concerned with process than product, and that hopefully challenges their own thinking along the way. When they do have an exhibition, they seem to be able to agree on a theme, but beyond that, the work expresses the explicit individuality of its maker. The Faux also eventually agree on a show’s title as, over the years, their work has been exhibited in venues as far-reaching as the Meadows Museum in Shreveport, LA to a local tattoo parlor.

Their irreverent curiosity takes their work into a variety of cross-disciplines that includes painting, sculpture, installation, mixed media, the written word and always kitsch. The current show, Domestic Bliss 2019 has it all.
Through May 26.

It was a little army and a little battle, but it was of mighty portent.

In 1780, atop Kings Mountain the Patriot Militia toppled the Royal Loyalists in the Revolutionary War. When the smoke cleared on the mountain’s steep western ridge, the Patriot Militia stood victorious.
“This is a place of inspiring memories. Here less than a thousand men, inspired by the urge of freedom, defeated a superior force entrenched in this strategic position.”

– President Herbert Hoover, October 7, 1930, atop Kings Mountain.
President Teddy Roosevelt once called this small but strategic victory the “turning point of the American Revolution.”

And to this day, the battle’s spirit lives on in the inhabitants of York County, South Carolina. Folks here carry a certain dignity because of their home’s unique place in history. And why shouldn’t they? It’s beautiful and rugged land they live on!
Which is why it won’t surprise you to hear that 230 years after the famous triumph, a small band of runners came directly to Kings Mountain for their own “battle.” A freak snowstorm and a last-minute marathon race cancellation had left them with little choice.

You see, just like the Patriot militia, they had something to prove. And if they could just get a race organizer to meet a few simple demands, they were going to fight for it.

So, they got in touch with Adventure Geek Productions, and inside an hour, the new Kings Mountain Militia was formed, and the battle was on!
Only this time the enemy wasn’t a red coated army. It was the terrain itself. Specifically, 26.2 miles of it. They called the challenge Kings Mountain Marathon.

Brevard | 2-Day Adventure Camp
Apr 27 @ 8:45 am – Apr 28 @ 4:15 pm
Oskar Blues REEB Ranch

Ninjas are coming to Brevard!

Our 2-day camp gives you a chance to build up and clean up your ‘toolbox’ of mountain bike skills; from the fundamentals to mastering wheels lifts, high-speed cornering, drops, riding technical features and so much more! Join us for a full weekend of skills that will equip you to better handle a variety of terrain with speed and efficiency.

We will blend an in-depth version of our traditional Intermediate / Advanced skills training with coached riding sessions. After camp, you will see an immediate improvement in your riding and a boost in confidence on technical trails. You will be able to tackle rougher terrain and corners with greater control and flow through singletrack, switchbacks, and berms with more speed and efficiency.

You can think of our camps as an awesome opportunity for what we like to call a “traincation”—a fun-filled vacation in which you get to spend most of your time doing what you like to do most— riding your bike!
