Three misfit teenagers come together to start a Speech & Debate team at school, protest the school’s production of Once Upon a Mattress, and take down a possibly predatory teacher. Loyalties shift and secrets are revealed in this dark comedy by Tony-winner Stephen Karam.
At 75 years young, Jeanne Robertson continues to charm audiences with humorous observations about life around her. Standing tall at six-foot-two, this former Miss North Carolina has a vivacious personality, heart, and sense of humor.
Robertson tours nationally and appears regularly at the Grand ‘Ole Opry. She has eight nationally released DVDs, three books, hundreds of hours on SiriusXM satellite radio, and over 56 million YouTube views. The demand for Robertson’s family-friendly and engaging brand of comedy has grown exponentially. Some of her most popular anecdotes include “Don’t Go to Vegas Without A Baptist,” “Don’t Bungee Jump Naked,” and “Don’t Send a Man to the Grocery Store.”
A truly funny lady, Robertson’s witty depiction of everyday situations never fails to have audiences of all ages rolling with laughter.

The Mystery of the Seahorse
Asheville Contemporary Dance Theatre and the students of The New Studio of Dance present The Mystery of the Seahorse, a thrilling tale of love and bravery. Set in an endangered underwater reef with cartoon-type characters, this story explores the themes of ecology and pollution. A vibrant and colorful performance, The Mystery of the Seahorse will not only be entertaining and beautiful, but will also teach the lesson of why we need to keep our oceans clean.
Giles Collards giant puppet head creations and colorful sets compliment the inventive and original choreography of Susan Collard, the staff of New Studio of Dance and even some of the students themselves. Audiences are in for a treat as they are transported underwater for this lively and entertaining full-length dance theater spectacular.
The New Studio of Dance was established in 1970 and offers a comprehensive and wide-ranging dance education to young students of the community. Not only are there the usual classes in ballet, tap, and modern; but there are also classes in composition, swing, belly dance, and more. As the students become older and more experienced, they help to design their own dance program and are given a lot of creative freedom to discover who they are as dance artists.
Dont miss The Mystery of the Seahorse for a colorful, underwater treat. With two weeks of performances, this show will be a great way for children of all ages to spring into summer!

Rock & Roll will NEVER die!!!
Vocalists Bobby, Kris and Joe Dandy lead the band through a 2+ hour, mind-blowing, and drop-dead accurate homage to some of the biggest arena acts in the world. Van Halen, KISS, Motley Crue, Queen, Journey, Prince and Aerosmith are but a few of the acts fans will see brought to life. The Hairball stage becomes an entirely new rock concert before your very eyes countless times throughout the night.
The motor that drives the Hairball dragster consists of Freaky on the electric bass, Billy on the drums, and Happy on the lead guitar. Hearts Gone South Album Release Show at The Grey Eagle, Vaden Landers band opening!
Asheville’s honky tonk darlins, Hearts Gone South, play original classic-style country and honky tonk full of heart and soul, laced with wit and woe.
Hearts Gone South’s sound has been described as “ the sweet spot between vintage country and modern production values — that make the band’s original tunes sound and feel warmly familiar.” – Bill Kopp, author, music journalist, historian, collector, and musician.
Led by vocalist Tricia Tripp, this cast and crew of all star players (JP Parsons,-tele, Casey Saulpaugh – pedal steel, Scott Thomas- drums, and Landon George- bass) bring fire and feeling to the age-old stories of heartbreak, love, and victory for the underdog. From tear-soaked ballads, to heartfelt dance tunes, to twangy barn burners, Hearts Gone South shoots straight from the hip with impassioned vocals, a tight rhythm section, and smoking leads, to hit their target dead on.
A band rooted in a love of old country, and branching out into their own firebrand of the genre, Hearts Gone South will win your heart over with their original country, shining like diamonds in a rhinestone world.

Join Asheville Friends of Astrology in the community room at Earth Fare Westgate at 7pm on Friday, May 17 to hear David Leskowitz speak on Lifecycle Patterns and Centaur Planets. We’ll see how the eccentric movements of Chiron and Chariklo interact with the regular cycles of planets like Saturn over a lifetime. Depending on the sign your Centaur planets tenanted at birth, you experience the patterns Steven Forrest calls the “bio-psychic script” differently. We can learn a whole lot about how our life unfolds based on these interlocking cycles alone. Bring your birth chart and be prepared to learn how to plug in these helpful new elements to your astrological picture!
David will share some of his magical methods to work with Chiron more closely, too.

TV Girl w/ Yohuna
at The Mothlight
Friday, May 17th
Doors 8pm
Tickets: $14adv, https://www.ticketfly.com/purchase/event/1834033
“On the surface, TV Girl is a sunny, throwback splash of ‘60s French pop and southern California soul. Yet, under that shiny veneer lays a dark heart, beating with sharp wit and cynical alienation, and the music is all the more alluring for it. TV Girl, comprised of Brad Petering, Jason Wyman, and Wyatt Harmon, was formed in 2010 by Petering as an outlet to blend the love of Spector-esque girl-group pop with an emerging interest in hip-hop. Featuring shimmering vocals and sampled beats, the self-titled debut EP of the same year turned heads online immediately; the group’s lush vintage rhythms and timeless pop hooks were even making waves on the BBC. They continued to release increasingly popular EPs and mixtapes between tours.
In 2014, TV Girl unveiled their first full-length, the critically acclaimed French Exit. The album keeps true to the TV Girl charm with a bevy of electronic samplings infused throughout light and airy guitars, whirring organs, and ethereal vocals. However, this record is not all summer nostalgia, and there are plenty of times where French Exit reads like disaffected fiction. The moody characters in these songs are fueled by revenge as often as love, underpinned by desperation and a deep yearning to connect.
Their 2016 follow up, Who Really Cares, finds the band doubling down on their heavy use of samples. Combining the aesthetic of 90’s hip hop with modern psychedelic pop, Who Really Cares offers a glimpse into the psyche of a love scorned twenty-something.”
TV Girl’s latest album, Death Of A Party Girl, sustains the dream pop, neo-psychedelic feel of previous work. Petering delivers prosaic storytelling in third-person narration, recounting tales of wistful, romantic flings and mini-dramas starring various shades of the archetypal manic pixie dream girl. The songs are echoing and surreal, cut with samples of dialogue from movies and radio shows that convey a grainy, vintage feel. Standouts include “King of Echo Park,” its beachy vibe conjuring images of skinny palm trees, graffitied skateparks, and humming lowriders; “7 Days Til Sunday”, a swaying, upbeat bop where the narrator reminisces of rooftop parties and one night stands in Manhattan; and the intoxicating “Every Stupid Actress”.”

Defenders is excited to announce the launch of our 2019 seasonal series: Wildlife Workshops & Walkabouts!
In this fun and educational series, you’ll have a chance to learn about your local wildlife and the habitat on which they depend. These lectures and hands-on activities will get you out into the great outdoors to discover the amazing world around you.
Our first event celebrates the salamanders of Southern Appalachia. Join us and special guest presenter, herpetologist and salamander expert R. Graham Reynolds, PhD on Thursday, May 16th to learn about the salamanders of our area – including rare and imperiled species such as the hellbender and green salamander – why they’re important and how we’re addressing conservation challenges they face.
Dr. Reynolds is an Assistant Professor of Biology at UNC Asheville and an Associate at Harvard’s Museum of Comparative Zoology in Cambridge, MA. Following his presentation, we will learn how to create backyard salamander sanctuaries of our own. Then, join us on Saturday, May 18th for a walkabout in Rocky Fork State Park, TN. We’ll look for salamanders and explore this important area that supports an array of wildlife.
