We spend so much time celebrating the works of European masters like Beethoven, Mozart, Mahler, and Dvôrak. And those works all deserve to be celebrated. But they must stand alongside Bernstein, Copland, and Gershwin—these masters gave American classical music its voice.

Presented in collaboration with the Asheville Percussion Festival, 51’15.657″ for a Speaking Percussionist is Bonnie Whiting’s realization of a solo simultaneous performance of John Cage’s 45′ for a Speaker and 27’10.554″ for a Percussionist. These are vintage pieces: music from the mid-50’s and part of a series of timed works that Cage enjoyed mixing together and referred to in notes and letters as “the ten thousand things.” A culmination of 14 months of work and study, Whiting is the first performer to execute both pieces in their entirety.

Presented in collaboration with the Asheville Percussion Festival, 51’15.657″ for a speaking percussionist is Bonnie Whiting’s realization of a solo simultaneous performance of John Cage’s 45′ for a speaker and 27’10.554″ for a percussionist. These are vintage pieces: music from the mid-50’s and part of a series of timed works that Cage enjoyed mixing together and referred to in notes and letters as “the ten thousand things.” A culmination of 14 months of work and study, Whiting’s version is the first to feature one performer executing both pieces in their entirety. Cage subjected several of his lectures to chance procedures, and the result is his quirky and imaginative 45′ for a speaker. This particular version of the percussion score is a fusion of traditional percussion instruments and found-objects. The Asheville Downtown Association will host the Ingles Independence Day Celebration on Wednesday, July 4 from 2-10pm at Pack Square Park in downtown Asheville. This event is produced in partnership with the City of Asheville.
The free event features family activities throughout the day, with a fireworks extravaganza capping off the event at 9:30pm.
The Ultimate Air Dogs return to Asheville for the 4th of July event. Competitions will take place at 2pm, 4pm and 6pm, with the finals at 7:30pm. Learn more about the Ultimate Air Dogs and how to register your dog to compete at ultimateairdogs.com. Pets are only allowed in the Air Dogs area and not throughout the rest of the event.
Two giant slides, an obstacle course, a toddler bouncy house and a slack-line area will be part of a $3 wristband allowing kids to jump, bounce, balance and race as many times as they’d like. There will also be free children’s crafts provided by LEAF Easel Rider and lawn games provided by the Girl Scouts.
The Splashville Fountain will be on until 6pm as well for kids to cool off and splash about.
Stage entertainment kicks off at 5pm with local outfit, The Moon and You. This husband-and-wife team’s vocal blend and heartfelt lyrics form a sound that is warm and inviting with songs ranging from folk to bluegrass, country to jazzy.
Up next at 6:30pm is Redleg Husky, a country and bluegrass group hailing from right here in Asheville. The duo pushes musical boundaries in their impassioned live show.
Headlining the Ingles Independence Day Celebration is The Larry Keel Experience. Described by music critics and reviewers as the most powerful, innovative and all-out exhilarating acoustic flatpicking guitarist performing today, Keel has shared the stage with legends like Del McCoury, Bill Monroe and John Hartford. The Larry Keel Experience combines a multitude of musical influences, instrumental dexterity, and original songs to create an explosive acoustic sound. The Larry Keel Experience will hit the stage at 8pm.
Beer and wine will be available for purchase including local, regional and national brews. Water and other drinks will also be available for purchase.
Food vendors include: Cecilia’s Kitchen, D.O.G.S., El Kimchi, The Grubbery Food Truck, Gypsy Queen Cuisine, The Hop, Kernal Mike’s Famous Kettle Corn, Mac Daddy’s Organic Lemonade, Paris Festival Bakery, Sugar and Snow Gelato and Sunshine Sammies.
No outside alcohol, pets or vending will be permitted. Parking is available in City of Asheville parking decks, on the street or in private lots.

Folkmoot USA, The State International Festival of North Carolina, is a two-week celebration of the world’s cultural heritage through folk music and dance. Held each summer across the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina, Folkmoot features performers demonstrating cultural heritage through colorful, authentic, and original reproduction costumes, lively dance, and traditional music.

Premier outdoor art and craft fair hosts 114 artists from across the country exhibiting arts and crafts of original design in a variety of mediums. The Fair draws thousand of eager shoppers to the beautiful tree covered grounds of the Cathedral of All Souls in charming Historic Biltmore Village.
By highlighting these and other works, Brevard Music Center is presenting some of Bernstein’s greatest output and showing a wonderful variety of his music that is at the core of American classical music experience. We spend so much time celebrating the works of European masters like Beethoven, Mozart, Mahler, and Dvôrak. And those works all deserve to be celebrated. But they must stand alongside Bernstein, Copland, and Gershwin—these masters gave American classical music its voice.
It’s wonderful for Brevard to be joining in with orchestras and institutions all around the world in celebrating the birth of one of the most compelling musicians of our time…or any other time.

Our weekend gathering is held in Canton, North Carolina less than one hour West of Asheville. Camp Daniel Boone is a summer Boy Scout Camp that has opened it’s facilities and camp to us after it’s closed for the season. The camp sits nestled at the base of Cold Mountain, bordering the Pisgah National Forest and Shining Rock Wilderness Area with thousands of acres and endless hiking trails.
Earth Based Skills are the heart of what we offer in our workshops, while also cultivating the opportunity for deeper connection to each other and nature. Fire, Fiber Arts and Stone Tools are where we begin, with Core Skills Sessions on Thursday morning, as these help weave the rest of the skills together. Thursday afternoon through Sunday morning will have a variety of morning and afternoon classes you can choose to take, or you may prefer to visit our Healing Arts area and sign up for a massage or body work.
Since we are gathering to further our growth, knowledge and experience with mother nature, we also feel it is important to support local, natural, healthy, humane food. We will be working with local farmers and producers to acquire as much of the food we use for our meals as possible. We will enjoy two all natural, local, omnivorous and gluten free meals per day to nourish our bodies in the large Dining Hall, complete with a front porch and rocking chairs overlooking the lake and valley!
We have some special “creature comforts” with this site as well. There are sizable 8’x8′ platform tents and tiny cabins with camping cots available for your use and everyone gets their own tent. There are many drinking water spigots, showers, flush and latrine style toilets available for your needs located throughout camp.
