The Band’s Visit
Sep 1 @ 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm
Peace Center

Part of the 2019 – 2020 Broadway Season. Learn more about subscribing: http://bit.ly/2J6KMcs.

The Band’s Visit is the winner of 10 Tony Awards®, including Best Musical, making it one of the most Tony-winning musicals in history. And now it’s also a Grammy Award® winner for Best Musical Theater Album.

In this joyously offbeat story, set in a town that’s way off the beaten path, a band of musicians arrive lost, out of the blue. Under the spell of the desert sky, and with beautiful music perfuming the air, the band brings the town to life in unexpected and tantalizing ways. Even the briefest visit can stay with you forever.

With a Tony-and Grammy-winning score that seduces your soul and sweeps you off your feet, and featuring thrillingly talented onstage musicians, The Band’s Visit rejoices in the way music makes us laugh, makes us cry, and ultimately, brings us together.

Rounding Third, starring FRP favorites Scott Treadway and JP Sarro. This good-humored and sincere story about a Little League coach, his team of youngsters, and his new assistant coach, is sure to hit a home run, says Rounding Third Director, Charlie Flynn-McIver. “They say that life imitates art but what is really happening here is that the art has gotten it right about life. Arms and The Man Readers Theatre ACT
Sep 1 @ 2:30 pm
Reuter Center on UNCA’s campus

This comedy is often viewed as Shaw’s wittiest play! This is a borderline farce that will stimulate serious thinking about the nature of both romance and war. What is Raina to do when she finds that an enemy soldier has taken refuge in her room? What will her fiancée say? The plot, of course, thickens! Directed by Jim Reid and performed as Readers Theatre as a part of The Autumn Players’ Readers Theatre Showcase Series.

The Official Animal Rights March- Asheville
Sep 1 @ 7:30 pm – 9:30 pm
Vance Monument

Who’s ready to bring the vegan message to the south?

The Official Animal Rights March is an annual vegan march founded by UK animal rights organisation Surge. The march began in London in 2016 with 2,500 attendees and by 2018 TOARM succeeded in a global attendance of 28,000 vegans marching in 25 cities across the world, demanding an end to all animal oppression. In 2019 we’re bringing The Official Animal Rights March back to North Carolina to spread the message of animal liberation across the globe.

This will be the second Official Animal Rights March in Asheville! In order to make this march succeed, we need your help. Invite your friends and tell every vegan you meet. This is the day when we unite, when we stand up and rise up.

The future is vegan, but we must continue to speak out on behalf of the animals until the day that their suffering ends.

Save the date, spread the word – and let’s make history for the animals.

Noah Proudfoot and The Botanicals at NOC Bryson City!
Sep 1 @ 10:00 pm – Sep 2 @ 1:00 am
Nantahala Outdoor Center

www.noahproudfoot.com

Drawing upon ten years of experience in Asheville, Noah Proudfoot’s heartfelt songs are a direct reflection of the people and places that have impacted his time here. Studied in poetry and certified as a yoga teacher, his lyrics aim to uplift and inspire, while shining an honest light on the challenges of being human. His band, ‘Noah Proudfoot and the Botanicals,’ broadcasts these messages on a much larger scale, using elements of funk, soul, and roots/rock to deliver a dance party with a purpose. And for the past two years they’ve been doing just that- making waves in the transformational festival scene and gathering a dedicated following of like-minded fans.
Their five song EP, ‘Travel Light,’ is the first CD from the full band- melding blues guitar, steel pan drum, brother harmonies, and a driving rhythm section for a sound that is rich with color and life. Each song is a world unto itself, exploring themes of adventure, simple joys, and beauty amidst brokenness. Listeners will be excited to hear a much larger sound being presented, driven by vibrant melodies and meaningful lyrics that linger long after the song is over.

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard at New Belgium Brewing
Sep 1 @ 7:00 pm
New Belgium Brewing

Formed in 2010 in Geelong, fifty miles outside of Melbourne (where they now reside) as a jam band off-shoot of a variety of other projects, King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard released their debut album 12 Bar Bruise in 2012. Currently the most productive band on the planet, they are a once-in-generation group who play a heady combination of psychedelia, prog rock, freakbeat, jazz, heavy metal and Krautrock at a breathless punk pace; theirs is a high-velocity sound, each album a transportative diversion down a slippery worm-hole steered by seven minds sharing one on-going journey. Those who have seen them live will attest that King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard can go toe-to-toe with any of their forefathers; Aphrodite’s Child, Mahivishnu Orchestra, Hawkwind, King Crimson, The Doors, 13th Elevators, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, and Amon Duul II.

As promised at the beginning of the year, King Gizzard successfully released an unprecedented five studio albums in 2017 with the release of Gumboot Soup arriving this past New Year’s Eve. 2017’s other previous four records – February’s Flying Microtonal Banana, June’s Murder of the Universe, August’s Sketches of Brunswick East and November’s Polygondwanaland – have all received individual critical acclaim and set the stage for the next dizzying chapter in the band’s career.

In years to come King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard will be judged not by their separate albums, but by a body of work where themes, melodies, motifs, riffs and ideas resurface and recur, each album peeling back a layer of the onion to glimpse at past and future alike.
