“Infinite Possibilities”
Asheville Gallery of Art’s July show, “Infinite Possibilities,” is a multi-member show highlighting the insights artists gained during increased time in their home studios during the COVID-19 pandemic. The show runs July 1-31 during gallery hours.
Change can be good! As members of a cooperative, the 31 artists of Asheville Gallery of Art are used to being and working together to keep the gallery functioning. With COVID-19, everyone is working in their home studios and finding that they have the chance to do what they might not have tried before. Many say they have found infinite possibilities within their work as well as new ways to sell work they’ve been creating.

- Submissions will be accepted June 15, 2020 through July 31, 2020.
- Top 10 designs will be selected July 31, 2020 – August 31, 2020 on Facebook.
- We will select the winning artist based on portfolio/resume submissions to be announced on Labor Day Weekend.
A Note to the Artists Regarding the Final Mural:
Once the final artist has been selected, the mural artwork will need to include 2 of the following elements: The Toyota brand symbol, Fred Anderson Toyota of Asheville logo, OR 1 Toyota vehicle.
In alignment with the community’s commitment to uplift racial healing and communal reconciliation, Councilwoman Sheneika Smith, along with other community groups and leaders, will be coordinating a public art installation in Asheville’s central business district. The purpose of this installation is to galvanize solidarity and celebrate our collective movement towards addressing systemic issues locally.
Upon final approval from the City of Asheville, the proposal envisions a street mural located at Pack Square Park on N. Pack and S. Pack Square – an area previously planned as part of the city’s public space initiative.
We need financial support to help make this happen! Our goal is to raise $24,000 for supplies, documentation, maintenance, removal, and most importantly to make sure the artists get paid. The Asheville Area Arts Council is the fiscal agent for this project. Please donate what you can and help us spread the word!
One of the main purposes of the Black Lives Matter mural is to elevate the voices of black artists and make sure they are paid for their work. But, it is much more than that. “The artists who will put their hands to this street mural represent many untold stories,” said Councilwoman Smith. “It is my hope that all eyes that connect with this piece will experience and appreciate the bloody truths released from our collective memory onto a hard canvas. Yet, this is more than a painting or bold expression. It’s an altar that observes the most sacred social movement of my lifetime.”

The coronavirus pandemic halted spay and neuter surgeries as communities were forced to suspend non-emergency veterinary services. This has resulted in a huge backlog of unaltered animals. The Humane Society of the United States estimates that the current backlog is over 260,000 animals nationwide. Brother Wolf currently has a waiting list of over 500 animals that are in need of spay and neuter services.
Even prior to this pandemic, we couldn’t meet the existing need with our original clinic. A second clinic will enable us to double our capacity and serve an average of 180 animals each week! Spaying and neutering is so critical because it saves lives by reducing pet overpopulation. Our Second Spay and Neuter Mobile Clinic will travel around Western NC, providing low-cost services to under-resourced communities.

“The goal of Hungry Paws is to provide pet food for homes that are having to choose between feeding themselves or their pets. We don’t want people to surrender their animals to shelters because they cannot afford them right now.” says Derek Fox. “The fund is intended to cover the needed window until people can go back to work or who need the support to get by. Until then, it’s up to us to provide for these wonderful animals.”
Derek got to work, contacting area rescues and finding other partners. Pet Source, a local Hendersonville pet supply store, jumped on board, contacting their suppliers to setup a discounted purchasing program that will make the donated funds go even further.
The fund partners with Blue Ridge Humane Society, as both a recipient and as distributer of funds and food to other rescues in the area with food support programs or that have a need in their community.
“The fund will help to set pet owners up for success and bridge the gap until folks are employed again or able to get ahead again.” shares Angela Prodrick, Executive Director of Blue Ridge Humane. “This is even more vital during this time as there is an increased need as people are finding themselves in the new situation of needing help when they haven’t before, and we are here to help.”
There are several ways to donate to the fund. The Hungry Paws Initiative can be found on Facebook with an easy donation process, or on www.refinedpup.com/. Donations can also be made to Blue Ridge Humane with a note designating it for Hungry Paws online at www.blueridgehumane.org or by mail to 14 Towne Place Drive, Suite 130, Hendersonville, NC 28792.
The Blue Ridge Humane Society, Inc., is a 501(c)3 animal welfare organization started in 1950 dedicated to ensuring the highest quality of life for animals in Henderson County and our neighboring communities. BRHS cares for pets awaiting adoption at the Adoption Center; offers low-cost vaccine clinics, animal education programs, pet training classes, and youth education and projects; coordinates community pet food assistance, emergency vet assistance, and the Spay Neuter Incentive Program (SNIP), which is a collaboration with Henderson County, the City of Hendersonville, and the Henderson County Animal Services Center.

Inspired by the national trend of porch portraits, Suzanne of The Gallery at Flat Rock, will be offering portrait sessions and donating a portion of the session cost to Flat Rock Playhouse. A fifteen-minute porch portrait session is $65 (cash or check) of which $15 will be donated to the Flat Rock Playhouse, a friend and neighbor to the gallery which made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 season. |
Voted WNC’s favorite art event for more than a decade, The Big Crafty returns for a heart-swelling day of art & craft on Sunday, July 12 from 12-6pm at Pack Square Park.
Join us for a free-and-fun-for-all trip through the creative landscape, with 150 creative venturers and total art stars, craft-infused good times, hugs and high fives.

Asheville Art Scene Re-energized
After 4 months of mandated closure due to Covid-19, the Asheville Gallery of Art (AGA) proudly re-opens its doors at 82 Patton Avenue, across from Pritchard Park. Now open to limited hours, Fridays and Saturdays noon to 5 pm and by private appointments via its Facebook page, the Gallery emerges from shutdown with a spectacular all-member exhibit titled “Infinite Possibilities.” The show runs now through July 31.
AGA’s president, Sue Dolamore says, “With the many difficult challenges in the world today, it’s a good time to redirect our attention to something that makes us feel good and art is just that! ” Dolamore says the co-op’s 31 member artists have been busy in their home studios creating fresh new artworks that now fill the landmark gallery’s walls. AGA prides itself on displaying a wide range of works created by WNC’s best local artists.
Dolamore adds, “Asheville’s vibrant art scene is coming back! Our team of artists also have been working hard preparing for a safe and beautiful gallery environment for our visitors, collectors and artists.”
Gallery artist, Sahar Fakhoury, also announces the debut of AGA’s brand new online store, https://asheville-gallery-of-art.square.site/. “With over 500 original paintings on the walls, in the Original Art Case and our Online Store, there’s something for everyone.”

THE YEAR 2020 While we aren’t able to do our live demos so far this year, we have another idea! Nancy Dillingham is one of our local writers and Nancy is a poet. She has written at least 10 books of poetry because we have them at Mountain Made. She has probably written more. “In Fred Chappell’s introduction to Dillingham’s book, Like Headlines: New and Selected Poems, he says: “Poetry is news that stays news” and that, in Dillingham’s poetry, “we wait both for the future to appear and for the past to subside.” Nancy is going to be our feature demo artist for the year and sharing her writing experiences. We are doing a book of poetry or thoughts on “The Year 2020”. They could be funny or serious. So our demo this year is going to be writing. Email it to us, bring it by Mountain Made, or use our demo table to put your thoughts down on paper and leave it with us. We are then, around the middle of Nov., going to put it all together into a book! It won’t be fancy but it will be for sale. We will take donations and it will all go to charity. We haven’t decided if it will be one or several but “The Year 2020” will let us know where it is most needed! We have a lot to think about this year so put it on paper and share your thoughts! Be sure to put your name on it, city and state but if you want to remain anonymous that is fine too.

Due to the covid, we will have limited seating and reservations will be required to paint in store.
Masks or face coverings must be worn upon entering and while you are in the store. We have hand sanitizer at the front door for your use, and throughout the shop. The store has been rearranged to accommodate a 6 foot distance between tables and customers, and to accommodate a touch less environment. The claying around staff will pull and handle all pottery until it is placed on your table, and the paints will be poured for you. We will have lots of employee only areas, so be mindful of the floor markers.
We are also wearing face masks, sanitizing and disinfecting after every customer and throughout the day while following CDC guidelines.
We want to make this a safe environment as well as a relaxing outing for you and your family.
So, if you or one of your family members are not feeling well, we urge you to stay at home and reschedule your reservation for another day.
Reservations are to hold your table and time, your fee will be returned at checkout.
Together, we’ll explore the creative freedom and mental relaxation that comes from practicing hand embroidery without a preset pattern or design. We’ll set up our projects and free our minds to relax and wander while our hands create meandering designs. No sketching is involved, no hand sewing experience is required, and best of all, there’s no way to do it wrong!

~ a hand sewing needle
~ embroidery floss (in several colors, if you like)
~ snips or scissors
~ reading glasses (if you’ve reached that age)
~ needle threader (ditto)
(If you have a hand sewing project in progress and would just like some company, you’re welcome to work on that instead.)
Ages 17+. No hand sewing experience required.
Suggested donation: $1 – $5 per session

Registration Information
Admission to the Camera Clinic is free for working photojournalists and active members of the N.C. Press Photographers Association. Admission to the Camera Clinic for photography enthusiasts who are not currently working photojournalists is $55 per person. Anyone wanting to secure a spot for the Camera Clinic (non-media or media) must purchase a $55 pass online beginning Wednesday, July 17. The $55 will be refunded to those who show active press credentials or a current NCPPA membership card at check-in.
A special two-day admission ticket is available for guests who do not plan to attend the clinic. Guests may also purchase extra tickets for the Saturday night buffet dinner. If you have a meal preference, e.g. vegetarian or vegan, or particular food allergies, please let us know when registering or by emailing [email protected].
On the day of the event, we ask registered participants to check in at MacRae Meadows gate 3 (about 10 yards on the Linville side of the driveway to the Grandfather Mountain Office and 30 yards on the Linville side of the attraction Entrance Gate) to pick up a gate admission pass. This will allow you to identify yourself when coming and going from the park. Visitors who do not have valid Camera Clinic admission will be expected to pay regular park admission and will not be admitted to the auditorium.

Virtually enjoy the process of marbling, the antique process of floating paint on a thickened water surface. Watch as Pam Granger Gale drops paint onto the surface and each drop expands. More and more paint drops push others around without mixing. Then combs and rakes are used to create both historical and freeform patterns. Paper is placed on the surface and captures this monoprint forever.

In its 73rd year, the Craft Fair of the Southern Highlands returns to downtown at the Harrah’s Cherokee Center – Asheville. Filling both the concourse and arena levels of the venue, makers exhibit a variety of craft ranging from contemporary to traditional in works of clay, wood, metal, glass, fiber, natural materials, paper, leather, mixed media, and jewelry.

Artists Collective | Spartanburg 2020 Juried Exhibition4 state exhibit – SC, NC, TN, GA We have struggled with whether to cancel this exhibit or not. We know that artists need this type of exhibit more than ever so we are continuing as planned. The dates are Sept. 15 – Oct. 17. There will not be an awards reception this year, but we will make the awards announcements online at a given time. The exhibit can be viewed during normal business hours. Last year this was a very successful event and prizes totaled $4500. We plan the same this year. |
