Join the Green Riverkeeper on Thursday, July 27th for our Green Clean Series! This event continues the 4th Thursday of every month June-September from 5:30-8ish. You do not have to kayak to be a part of the monthly cleans. We absolutely welcome road-side helpers too!

We are gearing up for a youth talent showcase to be held at Burial Beer (South Slope location) at our August 13 event: LEAF Famtastic Sunday. The Talent Showcase will kick off at Burial starting at 1 p.m. Want to be part of it? Auditions are on Saturdays in July at LEAF Global Arts. The talent showcase is free to enter and the August 13 event is free as well.

In partnership with Riding In Color WNC, who create intersectional affinity spaces for BIPOC of all genders, body sizes, and abilities to build skills and community within cycling in WNC, we’re co-hosting a BIPOC Affinity Summer Cycle experience as well as our traditional event in an effort to create a more inclusive space for people to enjoy riding in their community. Join us for weekly workdays in the Sand Hill native tree nursery. Tasks vary and often include repotting, weeding, mulching, and other special projects to improve infrastructure and function.

Volunteer with United Way to Stuff Backpacks for School Supply Drive
I’m excited to share with you today an Alexis de Tocqueville Society volunteer event that is just around the corner! We know that all too many students arrive on the first day of a new school year with the desire to learn but without all the necessary school supplies needed. UWABC is coordinating with local nonprofits, who directly work with Buncombe County students, to gauge the need of our students. We aim to provide 2,350 backpacks to grade school children across Buncombe County, and we need the Tocqueville Society’s help in stuffing backpacks. Come on out and volunteer with fellow Alexis de Tocqueville Society members on August 1st!

Do you have a boundary-pushing, innovative performance piece, short film or installation that you’re ready to share?
We will open applications for the film portion of the festival in fall 2023. Films must be submitted via FilmFreeway. Our application fee for films is $5.
NOW CONSIDERING WORKS OF ALL KINDS
We accept live performances from 5 to 60 minutes in length, plus installations and films. We’re open to other types of performance as well – let’s talk! Depending on its length, your piece may be grouped with another show, or scheduled as a Random Act of Fringe. RAFs are free and open to the public, and artists receive a stipend for their performance, rather than relying on door sales.
Typically each artist with a ticketed show gets 2 performances. But in 2024, we’re exploring the option of giving a few shows 3 performances, at select venues only. Our venues range from 20-80 person capacity.

3. THE ASHEVILLE FRINGE ARTS FESTIVAL IS A JURIED FESTIVAL.
We carefully review each and every submission. You’ll know by late October if your piece is selected. Should your piece get selected, there is a $35 participation fee.
In partnership with Riding In Color WNC, who create intersectional affinity spaces for BIPOC of all genders, body sizes, and abilities to build skills and community within cycling in WNC, we’re co-hosting a BIPOC Affinity Summer Cycle experience as well as our traditional event in an effort to create a more inclusive space for people to enjoy riding in their community. Preview the schedule below because there are many moving parts to Summer Cycle ‘23.
Support the Summer Cycle experience by volunteering to support the AoB kiosk, host the bike park, pedal patrol the routes, and/or breakdown or set up.

Calling all singers, songbirds, crooners, and chanteuses! Interested in joining WNC’s premier vocal ensemble and performing with Asheville Symphony?
The Asheville Symphony Chorus invites you to audition for the 2023-2024 season.
Auditions will take place August 8th and 15th, from 5:30pm to 8:00pm at First Congregational United Church of Asheville. Please use the form on the Auditions page of our website (ashevillesymphonychorus.com) to request a slot, and be sure to read up on what to prepare and what forms to bring.

Literacy Together (formerly Literacy Council of Buncombe County) hosts two monthly orientation meetings. Everyone is welcome to join us, from community members willing to learn more about Literacy Together’s work to prospective volunteer tutors.
We have a determined group of students waiting for volunteer tutors so they can move forward on their goals for a better future. Tutor training is via distance learning, and all tutoring sessions are online. We have programs teaching English to immigrants, adult literacy for folks working on a GED, and youth literacy for kids struggling to learn to read.
