Sigal Music Museum’s current special exhibition, Worlds Apart: Musical Instruments from Secular to Sacred, highlights items from the JoAnn and Frank Edwinn Collection, which hails from all over the world. Showing November 2023 – May 2024, Worlds Apart uses a diverse range of historical instruments, objects, and visuals to bring together musical narratives from seemingly disparate parts of the globe.

Worlds Apart: Musical Instruments from Secular to Sacred aims to increase public access to historical instruments from around the world and improve visitors’ understanding of musical traditions at the global level. Expanding beyond the typical parameters of the Western musical canon, Worlds Apart seeks to expose audiences to musical instruments and customs that are often overlooked or exotified. The instruments and other exhibit materials will offer visitors new perspectives on global music and a chance to consider how music is used for prayer and leisure in cultures around the world. By celebrating these stories, the museum intends to further its mission to collect and preserve historical musical instruments, objects, and information, which engage and enrich people of all ages through exhibits, performances, and experiential programs.

Displaying various objects from the JoAnn and Frank Edwinn Collection, Worlds Apart: Musical Instruments from Secular to Sacred focuses on international musical instruments and cultures, celebrating rites and traditions with ancient histories and contemporary legacies. Frank Edwinn, a successful basso in the mid-20th century, studied and toured internationally, eventually settling in North Carolina, where he taught music at the University of North Carolina Asheville. Throughout his life, he purchased various objects from around the world, aiming to expose students, and himself, to the wide and wonderful world of musical instruments. This impressive collection occupies a unique position for educating audiences unfamiliar with the vast scope of global music.

And, UNCA’s Ramsey Library Special Collections is now processing the Edwinn’s papers and a few recordings that will be accessible next semester!

Guests will meet at Dssolvr Asheville (63 N. Lexington Ave, Asheville, NC 28801) and then depart with their treasure map on a walking team scavenger hunt where they will use their minds and feet to follow Valentine’s Day themed clues, solve puzzles, and crack codes to find and unlock the treasure chest for a grand prize!

The hunt involves walking a distance of up to 2.0 miles in total and will take place rain or shine, so long as the weather does not become dangerous. The hunt typically takes about 60 minutes to complete.

Children under 10 years old are welcome to participate for free with the purchase of an Adult ticket.

A candlelight meditation on war and peace, featuring reflective masterworks by Shostakovich and Vaughan-Williams, and the world premiere of Frederic Glesser’s “An Illusion of Presence.”

Hendersonville, Sunday, February 11, 2024 : The 4SCO returns to the stage with a meditative and reflective program. This thought-provoking concert is titled “To Victims of War” and will feature a candlelight component. The concert will be held in Hendersonville at Grace Lutheran Church, 1245 6th Ave W, Hendersonville, NC on February 11, 2024, at 3:00 pm. Concert tickets are a $10 donation at the door.

The program features evocative compositions including; Glesser’s An Illusion of Presence, the Shostakovich Chamber Symphony in C minor To Victims of Facism and the War, and Vaughan-Williams’ Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis. This contemplative experience will leave audience members rapt and optimistic for the future of humanity.

As the Four Seasons Chamber Orchestra continues with the mission of connecting music with philanthropic opportunities, this concert will support the United Nations Global Crisis Emergency Relief Fund (CERF). The UN CERF provides direct relief to organizations that are supplying life-saving aid in the world’s most intense crises. This includes the provision of food, clean water, medication, shelter, and additional resources.

Just in time for Valentine’s Day, Friends of Music of The Episcopal
Church of St. John in the Wilderness presents Do You Love Me? The program features songs
that chart the lifecycle of a romantic relationship, from those first smitten moments through
loss and finally reconciliation.

Soprano Jacquelyn Culpepper and bass-baritone Dan Boye take the stage together for this
upcoming performance and their chemistry promises to be powerful. The Davidson College
professors have been performing together for 30 years, including appearances as featured
guest artists at the Breckenridge Music Festival for more than 15 years.
Jacquelyn Culpepper’s career highlights include concerts on almost every continent, including
those at Washington's John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and Atlanta’s
Symphony Hall. The Professor of Voice has also appeared on PBS; her national broadcasts
include An Evening with Cole Porter and Salute to Masterpiece Theatre.
As Professor of Physics, Dan Boye’s varied course offerings include one for non-science
majors entitled & ;Musical Technology. Along with his busy schedule of professional singing,
he also maintains an active research program in the development of new optical materials.

Everyone is invited to our monthly game night. I bring a group of games each month but feel free to bring your own as well. No specific games are set up for the night, we just bring a bunch of stuff from our collections and play some pick-up games. We have the tables and chairs. NOTE: This event is held at a church but it is not a church event, it is a community event. Everyone is welcome, everyone should feel comfortable attending, and while I’m always happy to privately answer questions about my faith or the church if asked, proselytizing is not the purpose of these gatherings. Guitar in hand and mic turned up loud, the tunes do the talking for Tanner Usrey. The Texas-born singer, songwriter, and guitarist pairs straight shooting storytelling with country grit, rock ‘n’ roll energy, and Americana eloquence. As such, he channels a classic spirit from a personal perspective. After piling up tens of millions of streams, packing hundreds of shows, and landing syncs on the likes of Yellowstone, he bares it all on a series of 2023 singles for Atlantic Records and much more to come.

“I let the songs be what they’re going to be, and I pride myself on that,” he notes. “Musically, it ranges from southern rock to country to Americana. When it comes to songwriting, I want to focus on what’s real – I don’t shy away from saying the hard things.”

Growing up in the small town of Prosper, TX, he gravitated towards music as a little kid. By five-years-old, he constantly belted out Alan Jackson songs around the house much to his family’s chagrin. “Everyone used to tell me to shut up,” he laughs. “I was the kid who sang all the time.”

Inspired by everyone from George Strait, Tom Petty, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Rolling Stones to his favorite band Whiskey Myers, he wrote countless songs and cut his teeth at gigs anywhere with a stage. In between holding down a job as a skip tracer, he carefully honed his signature style. Quitting his job in 2019, he unveiled the Medicine Man EP. “Come Back Down” generated 19.1 million Spotify streams followed by “Beautiful Lies” with 18 million Spotify streams. During 2021, he tirelessly gigged in between releasing the SÕL Sessions EP. “The Light” also notably soundtracked the finale of Yellowstone Season 4. Along the way, he cemented himself as an electrifying and energetic live presence with over 180 shows in 2022.

“When we’re on stage, our goal is to have the audience clinging to the edge of their seats,” he shares. “I get to play with a bunch of badasses, and I don’t take it for granted. We pounded the pavement and put at least 100K miles on the van in a year-and-a-half.”

Signing to Atlantic Records, he kickstarted 2023 with “Take Me Home,” cracking 10 million streams and counting. On its heels, the single “Give It Some Time” threads together dusty acoustic guitar and unfiltered lyrics as he pleads, “Give me something to believe in, baby, because I’ve been losing my mind.” Against an organ-laden beat, it builds towards an emotionally charged guitar solo that’s as scorching as his delivery is.

Ultimately, Tanner’s music might just say everything you need.

“I hope you hear what you want to hear, enjoy it, resonate with it, and know it’s real,” he leaves off. “It’s been a wild ride. I’ve busted my ass. I started off doing all of this on my own, so it’s crazy to see how this and the team around me have grown. People are going after real music right now, and that’s great. I’m looking forward to seeing where it goes next.”

Buncombe County Environmental Health is hosting a FREE course for pool operators, owners, and any others who are involved in the day-to-day operation of a public pool, spa, or other body of water or are tasked with filling out the paperwork annually.

Topics that will be covered:

• How to avoid getting your annual application sent back.
• How to avoid a revisit fee and permit-action items specific to North Carolina.
• Common permit conditions.
• Industry changes and what they mean for you.
• How to properly fill out your safety data sheet:
  • How to properly measure your sump.
  • How to determine a flow reduction, if needed.
  • How to determine that your drain covers work with your pool.

The training will be in person at 200 College St. Asheville, NC 28801. It will be broken up into two sections with the latter to work on your individual datasheet with in-person help from an Environmental Health staff member. Please note that this course is NOT a Certified Pool Operator (CPO) training course.

Rehearsals on Wednesday’s, 3:30-4:45

Beginning & Intermediate youth music classes on traditional and ol’ time instruments including but not limited to, fiddle, mandolin, banjo and guitar. Students will attend 40 minutes of music enrichment, including multiple flat-footing sessions led by Alice Kexel, story-telling, visits from guest musicians, as well as learn about the heritage of the music and the region. They will have 40 minutes of group music classes, and 40 minutes of singing or JAM rehearsal.

Advanced students will have 40 minutes of group instrument lessons, followed by 30 minutes of advanced singing including harmony and shape-note singing, and finish with 50 minutes of coached, small-ensemble rehearsal.

Classes are $15/session, for a total of $210 for the first student, and a 20% discount of $168 for each additional sibling. Parents may choose to split payments when registering. Inquire with Julie Moore at [email protected] or 864-420-6407 about scholarships.

Drew and Ellie Holcomb are a husband and wife Americana duo from Nashville, TN. Shortly after their marriage in 2006, the couple began touring together with Drew Holcomb & The Neighbors. The band has supported many national touring acts including, The Avett Brothers, NEEDTOBREATHE, Don Henley, Willie Nelson, Amos Lee, and Darius Rucker.

Ellie is no longer a touring member of “The Neighbors,” and has found success in a solo career as a Christian singer/songwriter and bestselling author, winning two Dove Awards and topping the Billboard charts. Her most recent album, CANYON, was released in June of 2021 to much fanfare.

Drew Holcomb still tours nationally with Drew Holcomb and The Neighbors and their most recent album, Dragons, is their most critically acclaimed release yet.

An Evening with Drew and Ellie Holcomb is a special engagement event, allowing the Holcombs to collaborate once again.
