An only child with OCD, Paul Hooper channels his dysfunction into a cathartic harangue. That’s a real flowery and obnoxious way of saying he complains in a funny way. Anyway, this native of Charlotte, North Carolina, now residing in New York City, has been featured on Gotham Comedy Live on AXS TV, Red Eye with Tom Shillue, at the HBO Comedy Festival in Vegas, Bridgetown Comedy Festival in Portland, Oregon, the Boston Comedy Festival, Michael Moore and Jeff Garlin’s Traverse City Comedy Arts Festival, the Vancouver Comedy Fest and was a finalist in the 30th Annual Seattle International Comedy Competition. A seasoned headliner, Paul has performed in forty two states and ten countries, including two armed forces tours. HIs debut solo album, “Tense and Uncomfortable” is available on Stand Up! Records, and iTunes.

She’s been seen on HBO, Showtime, IFC, Freeform, Hulu and The World Famous Comedy Store in Los Angeles regularly. She’s been heard on Netflix is a Joke on Sirius XM radio, on The Church of What’s Happening Now with Joey Diaz, Getting Doug with High, & on her own hit podcast, “No Sir I Don’t Like it.” She’s also headlined the San Diego Comedy Festival, Altercation Comedy Festival, Scruffy City Comedy Festival, and been featured in the New York Times. She has produced her own traveling comedy show, as well as performed in comedy clubs, colleges, military bases, strip malls, indie shows, dive bars, towns no one has ever heard of across the country.

This workshop is for anyone who wants to bring their real-life stories to the page, whether for publication or simply to record stories for family and friends. Through focused prompts, we will revisit and write about important moments from our lives. Our session will include timed writing exercises, group discussions, and an opportunity to read one’s work aloud in a supportive setting. Please bring paper and a writing implement and come ready to write!

Space is limited, so registration is required.

Lori Horvitz’ first collection of memoir-essays, The Girls of Usually, won the 2016 Gold Medal IPPY Book Award in Autobiography/Memoir. Her creative nonfiction has appeared in a variety of journals including Hobart, South Dakota Review, The New York Times, The Guardian, and Hotel Amerika. Professor of English at UNC Asheville, Horvitz has been awarded fellowships from Yaddo, Cottages at Hedgebrook, VCCA, Ragdale, Blue Mountain Center, and Brush Creek. She holds a Ph.D. in English from SUNY Albany, and an MFA in Creative Writing from Brooklyn College.
