The award-winning Celtic duo of harpist Sue Richards and guitarist Robin Bullock, present CAROLINA CELTIC, a monthly concert series at White Horse. Carolina Celtic showcases Irish and Scottish musical traditions and explores their commonality with the Appalachian ballads and stories of the Carolina mountains.

Tonight’s Guest Performers are CAROLYN SURRICK and RONN McFARLANE

One would be hard pressed to find two musicians whose musical journeys have been more parallel (and hail from Maryland.) Both of these distinguished artists have been champions of their respective instruments for decades – McFarlane on lute and Surrick on viola da gamba. Both are compelling performers, consummate musicians, and both have immersed themselves in music from the Renaissance and Baroque, music from Ireland and Scotland, and also compose new works.

Individually, they have been awarded, acclaimed, celebrated, and now finally, they have become musical partners in an extraordinary journey. While it is true that they toured for decades, traveled thousands of miles, slept in hundreds of hotels rooms, have been on stage in some of the most prestigious concert halls in this country, and recorded dozens of CDs, this new and unexpected partnership has been remarkable in every way. Their musicianship is impeccable, the ease with which they play together is stunning, and their music making is a joy to behold.

They’ve just released a new holiday album featuring reimagined traditional Christmas favorites alongside new works

It is alchemy. While Ronn McFarlane, and Carolyn Surrick, have both had significant and brilliant careers, their remarkable partnership has led them to this newfound musical life —and that has led to a rethinking and recasting of what a holiday concert can be. Yes, there are favorite Christmas carols. Yes, there is virtuosity, and yes, there are unexpected musical surprises. But there is a journey here. There is wistful memory, there is shared history, there are new stories to tell, and there is joy—joy in the making of the music, joy in the celebration of the season, and joy in the sharing of it. The unspoken communication between these two master musicians is beautiful and deep.

The partnership of Ronn McFarlane, lute, and Carolyn Surrick, viola da gamba, is one of a shared musical passion. They are both well established in their fields, have toured extensively, and recorded numerous CDs. But most importantly, they compose, arrange, and are always available to think about old music in new ways. As musicians, they are eternally productive and irrepressibly imaginative. As performers, they are luminous.

Americana artist Julia Sanders’ new album Morning Star—produced by John James Tourville of The Deslondes—unfolds a meticulously arranged musical landscape anchored by transfixing vocals and a compact but thoughtful narrative style that calls to mind forebearers like Gillian Welch and Emmylou Harris. On Morning Star, Sanders explores the complexities of transitions: from woman to mother, partners to parents, and free-wheelin’ musician to an adult with roots and responsibilities. The album is a poetic, often dark, yet silver-lined portrait of transformation and growth. With each track, Sanders explores a different facet—a career, a partner, a child—and the range of emotions they carry with them, from joy and pleasure to struggle, loneliness and self-doubt. Imagine a solid trivia stack with a magnetic host in an outdoor intimate setting.  Then add the excitement of BYOB and pedaling around the City on a one-of-a-kind contraption.

Kinda like if Willy Wonka did Trivia… you will be completely entertained, with no sense left unfulfilled.

And come back for more as we have several questions sets available with a good ole just for locals option!

Trivia tours seat up to 15 people, 1.5 or 40 mins hours long.  Bring your own beer in cans or wine and your thinking while drinking caps on let’s do this thing!

We will have some space set aside inside (if it is cold) or on the covered patio behind the main tap room (they have outdoor heaters but dress warm). Look for the AVL International Connections’ sign on the table. Grab a beverage and then join us on the deck! A local Food Truck will also be out front if anyone wants a bite to eat!

As a growing group, if you have friends that you would like to bring along, please do! Also encourage them to sign up on Meetup!

We will also be planning World Cup get-togethers and dining experiences at local restaurants, so keep an eye open for those invitations.

White Horse’s legendary Open Mic re-starts after a year off for bad behavior (COVID, really). Host Bill Altork will help us present wonderfully talented folks on their way up. The signup sheet is placed on the bar at 6:30 and the first ten to sign in are the performers for the evening. Each gets 15 minutes or three songs. It’s a lot of fun… especially since it’s free!

We’ll be following all COVID-19 protocols and we ask that you wear your mask when you’re not singing or enjoying a beverage from the bar.

Famed musician and actor Corey Feldman has announced the Love Retours (22 + A Few In 22) concert tour, his first US tour in five years. Featuring an all-new band, Feldman is hitting the road in support of his new album Love Left 2: Arm Me With Love which features the viral hit “Comeback King” ft. Curtis Young, as well as his new box set Love Left 2.1.

“After five long years of dealing with the pandemic, being locked out of America for a year, stopping my last tour to produce a documentary, and then diving right into the production of my new album Love Left 2, as well as putting together this amazing box set, nothing sounds better to me than getting out of my studio and back on the road in front of live audiences where I’ve always felt most comfortable,” said Feldman.

He continued, “We have a brand-new band and a brand-new album with 18 new songs to perform. This show will revisit much of my first Love Left album, making the show a combination of new and greatest hits, along with a potpourri of classics from my film catalogue. In short, it will be a spectacular theatrical extravaganza you won’t want to miss.”

Join us at Bottle Riot for a fun evening in their beautiful wine bar. They also have beer and cocktails, free parking, and are dog friendly!

This will be a chill event for socializing with other members of the group.

@ 7:00 pm they will have Riot Squad vinyl spinning.

Management has agreed to reserve a large table and the back area for our group. I’ll have a sign with the name of the group and name tags if you’d like to wear one. We had a great time at the last event and would love for more people to join the next one and bring a friend or two! I’ll use the event messaging to keep any attendees informed of any changes.

Join us for a weekly mountain music JAM with players in a round, where the session is focused on regional fiddle tunes and songs! You are welcome to come and listen or to learn and join in. This event supports the Henderson County Junior Appalachian Musician (JAM) Kids Program. Free but donations are accepted. Weekly event takes place at Oklawaha Brewing Company.

Ryan Cox is a comedian’s comedian. He is also a comedian for people who aren’t comedians. Ryan has been performing stand-up around the Southeast since 2016, with jokes ranging from crafted one-liners to twisted parenting tales to the ghost of Kmart. He has opened for Late Night TV comics like Sean Patton, Pete Lee and Sean Finnerty but he doesn’t like to brag about it.

The WTF (Women to the Front) band was formed this past summer as part of the inaugural WTF Music Festival that hosted women singers, musicians, sound techs, women owned businesses, and nonprofits serving women. Featuring a cast of Asheville women who love the blues, this group features Melissa McKinney – co-founder of WTF Music festival, Ashley Heath, Peggy Ratusz, Anne Combs, Kim Butler, Melissa Hyman, Kim Jade, Sarah Kohrs, Nina Singh, SG Hammond, Lynn Beach Smith, Aryan Graham, Derian Blane, McKinney and more! Dani Cox, the co-founder of WTF music festival will be the host of the evening.
