Julien Baker
Sep 7 @ 8:00 pm
The Orange Peel

Thao

Katie Malco

Ages 18+

‘Little Oblivions’ is Julien Baker’s third album and follow-up to 2017’s ‘Turn Out The Lights’, both on Matador Records. The New York Times said the ‘Turn Out The Lights’ is “the work of a songwriter who has resonated with an international audience (…), the rare second album that, despite new self-consciousness, stretches beyond an unspoiled debut to reach for even bigger things, with all its passion intact”. The Sunday Times said “the mix of detached vocals, lush
arrangements and laid-bare post-mortems on love, loss, dysfunction and acceptance is devastating.”

In 2018, Baker formed boygenius with Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus. The resulting eponymous EP and joint North American tour made for one of the most celebrated and talked about musical communions of that year, highlighting Baker at the forefront of a burgeoning generation of era-defining artists.

Baker shot to worldwide attention in 2015 with show-stopping debut, Sprained Ankle. Recorded in only a few days, it was a bleak yet hopeful meditation on identity, addiction, faith, resilience and redemption. An intense and immersive performer, her live shows were described by The New Yorker as “…. hushed, reverential. The only sounds you hear between songs are her fingers as she tweaks the tuning on her electric guitar, scattered whispers between friends, and the rustling as the crowd waits patiently for Baker to start strumming again”.

Baker has collaborated on studio recordings with Frightened Rabbit, Matt Berninger, Hayley Williams, Becca Mancari, Mary Lambert, and on stage with Justin Vernon, The National, Sharon Van Etten, Ben Gibbard, and others.

Halestorm

Self-doubt and depression clawed at the edges of Lzzy Hale’s mind when it came time to pen Halestorm’s fourth album, a follow-up to 2015’s Into The Wild Life. The musician didn’t feel like she was where she needed to be, both professionally and personally. When she and her bandmates, Arejay Hale, Joe Hottinger and Josh Smith, began writing, Lzzy wasn’t even sure who she was. “I kept thinking, ‘Can I still do this?’” she says. “I went down a lot of rabbit holes, and I’m my own worst critic. I needed to get over a lot of internal hurdles during this writing and recording process. This record was about overcoming inner demons.”

He was awarded a grant at the age of 12 for his musical proficiency, and was accepted at the age of 12 into his pre-college program at the University of South Carolina for cello. He went on to win first place in his youth orchestra’s concerto competition and performed with the orchestra on two separate occasions at the age of 13. Acoustic Eidolon
Sep 10 @ 7:00 pm
Isis Music Hall

Joe Scott and Hannah Alkire are a tour-de-force of acoustic music, described as “Superb Musicianship” by the News Reporter, Washington, GA!

Hannah studied with Gabriel Magyar of the Hungarian String Quartet, and was classically trained.

Hannah took the cello seriously from the start, and played in her school orchestra with her sister Sabina, bluegrass great Alison Krauss and Alison’s brother, Viktor Krauss. She decided early on to keep the cello her passion but not go to music school, although she continued to study and play seriously.

By the time Joe was 14, his dad suggested he take up the 5-string banjo. So instead of learning the latest Led Zeppelin and Beatles songs, he immersed himself in Bill Monroe, Lester Flat, and Earl Scruggs. Joe excelled on the banjo, and won many contests at regional bluegrass festivals by the age of 16. Over the next several years, he was involved in various folk, bluegrass and rock groups based in the Colorado area.

Seated Concert with Dinner – reservations highly recommended. Please call the venue for tickets and reservations. 828-575-2737

St. Paul + The Broken Bones
Sep 10 @ 7:30 pm
Peace Center

Paul Janeway, singer of the Birmingham, Alabama–based rock and roll soul band St. Paul & The Broken Bones was born and raised in America’s Deep South and has always used his music as an outlet from which to share what was in his heart and on his mind. With a powerful voice, a magnetism for connecting with people, and a gift for music, he traded in a career in ministry to start St. Paul & The Broken Bones in 2012.
In addition to Janeway on lead vocals and co-band leader Jesse Phillips on bass and guitar, the lineup is rounded out by Browan Lollar (guitars), Andrew Lee (drums), Al Gamble (keyboards), Allen Branstetter (trumpet), Chad Fisher (trombone) and Amari Ansari (saxophone).
The band’s latest project, Young Sick Camellia created a space for St. Paul & The Broken Bones to rival any forward-thinking band making music today, based on a concept all-too familiar to Janeway: family, and how we love them despite our differences.
