batch craft beers, hard jun, ciders, wine, and non alcoholic drinks). Family, fans, friends, and leashed dogs are all welcome!

You are invited to the opening reception on Friday, March 1 from 6-8 pm for The Soil’s Gaze—a solo exhibition of watercolor paintings by Chris Jehly.
The artist presents plein-air paintings of twisting tree limbs, swirling clouds, and fuzzy pockets of vegetation. Hiking to secluded locations to feel the pulse and the thrum of the natural world, Jehly lets his surroundings guide his process, bringing an element of spontaneity and chance into his landscapes. Jehly invites you into his sacred escapades—often in the Blue Ridge Mountains—with detailed foliage and patterned negative space that form kaleidoscopic worlds. Join us for a reception with the artist on March 1, from 6-8 pm.
Carl Sandburg wrote countless words in an array of different genres, including poetry, children’s stories, journal articles, as well as a biography and autobiography! He wrote of love and nature, dreams and struggles. This year’s theme of “Memory” is echoed in much of his works. ““Under the summer roses, when the flagrant crimson, lurks in the dusk, Of the wild red leaves, Love, with little hands, comes and touches you with a thousand memories, and asks you beautiful, unanswerable questions.” Carl Sandburg
Poems submitted for the 2024 contest should reflect the theme of “Memory.” By definition, “the process or power of recallling something learned or experienced from the past” Note: Poems do NOT need to be titled Memory, as long as the poem itself relates to the theme.
Students are invited to submit a poem to Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site’s annual Student Poetry Contest. The contest encourages youth to explore writing their own poetry and is open to students nationwide!
- Submissions are accepted from grades 3-12 and must be submitted by email by Monday March 4, 2024. See below for submission rules.
- Winners will be notified by April 7, 2024, and will be invited to participate in a virtual celebration program on Sunday, April 28.
Dads, Moms, Grandparents, Cousins, Aunts, Uncles, Siblings of all ages are invited to participate in this family theatre camp style production! There are roles for kids, teenagers and adults of all ages. Current, past, and new Playground Stage Families are invited to join!

Located within the wildly-popular and botanically beautiful Southern Appalachian Mountains, The North Carolina Arboretum offers more than 10 miles of hiking trails that connect to many other area attractions such as Lake Powhatan, the Pisgah National Forest and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Visitors of all ages and abilities can enjoy their hiking experience at the Arboretum as trail options include easy, moderate, and difficult challenge levels. All trails are dog-friendly and visitors are asked to adhere to the proper waste disposing procedures for pets.

Join us again for part one of our Winter Art Series at Swannanoa Library! Local artist Nora Mosrie will lead six sessions over the winter where kids can learn about different types of art and materials. For our March sessions, we’ll learn about Anni Albers, a German abstract artist and printmaker who lived in WNC and taught at the Black Mountain College! We will learn about her style and create abstract, crisscrossing geometric patterns. This class session is for ages 5-7. Please register for this event so we can predetermine the amount of materials needed. Sponsored by the Swannanoa Valley Fine Arts League and funded by the The Black Mountain-Swannanoa Valley Endowment Fund through the Community Foundation of WNC. |
Bowl for Kids’ Sake- The most fun you’ll have in rented shoes!
Bowl for Kids’ Sake is a fun, easy and a great way to help get kids matched to a mentor!
1. Create a Team: Teams are formed with 4-5 members. Create a team with family, friends, fraternity brothers, sorority sisters, co-workers, just whoever you can round up!
2. Raise money: Each bowler is asked to donate or raise a minimum of $50 in donations. Each team raises $250.
3. Join Us at the Bowling Alley: After you have secured your donations, it’s time to have fun! You’ll receive two games of bowling with shoe rental included and lunch for your team.

Our theme this year is Support Your Sport! If you are a veteran participator in Bowl for Kids’ Sake then you already know that we LOVE our costumes. Here’s your change to dress up in your favorite sports gear, team jersey, or sports hero. The possibilities are endless and we can’t wait to see the creativity of our bowlers!

WinterWorks : An exciting evening of dance featuring Neo Classical and Contemporary
works performed by the Ballet Conservatory of Asheville’s celebrated Professional and
Pre-professional dancers.
We had a wonderful 2023 year at BCA celebrating our 15th year. Productions included
‘Winter Works’,’Giselle’, and sold out performances of ‘The Nutcracker’ at both
Western Carolina University’s Bardo Arts Center and the Wortham Theater.
We were also very proud to announce that five of our graduated BCA students started
their professional ballet careers in top ranked ballet companies in the US, American
Ballet Theater’s Studio Company, Miami City Ballet, Ballet Tucson and Carolina Ballet.
We are excited for 2024! This season we will present ‘WinterWorks’ 2024, the
beautiful ballet ‘Paquita’ in the Spring and we will return to WCU’s Bardo Arts Center
and the Wortham Theater for ‘The Nutcracker’ in December.

Our theatre camp has been extremely popular and is well-suited for any young person interested in exploring the exciting world of theatre. Our faculty represents some of the finest talent in the area, and we are thrilled to have them at Tanglewood Summer.

Students will learn all about teamwork as they work together with their classmates and a professional Teaching Artist to perform scenes and songs from a short musical. Each actor will receive their own part with lines and songs to learn. Class time will be used for rehearsal and a performance complete with costumes and props will take place on the final class day.
