Recipient of a 2018 Avery Fisher Career Grant and a 2017 Lincoln Center Award for Emerging Artists, the Calidore String Quartet first made international headlines as winner of the $100,000 Grand Prize of the 2016 M-Prize Chamber Arts Competition. The quartet was the first North American ensemble to win the Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship, a BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist, and is currently in residence with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center’s Bowers Program (formerly CMS Two).

LEAF International Saint Vincent’s Elite Steel Pan Orchestra is getting creative with ways to keep the world connected to their culture. They are creating videos that demonstrate drum rhythms and patterns as part of their cultural exchange series. Led by culture keeper Kesslon Wilson, the orchestra is exploring tunes that relate to youth as young as 18 months.

Haiti has been experiencing immense turmoil for the past few years and the climate of violence is worsening. At LEAF, we stand in solidarity with Haiti. Despite the climate, young people have found hope in creating music as a positive outlet. These young people have been part of Prosjekt Haiti (LEAF partner) for the past 20 years. Their perseverance and strong foundation of faith is impeccable.
Isis Music Hall and Kitchen, a family-owned and operated business, is housed in a historic renovated theater in the heart of West Asheville. In this interview we learn how they have pivoted to safely provide dinner and a show in midst of 2020 craziness.
While we’ve all had to adjust to the “new normal” (whatever that is), our local business owners and managers have their own stories to tell about how they’ve been affected and what they are doing during these unprecedented times. Dig Local is proud to interview some of the awesome folks who make Asheville, Asheville.

Since 1980, the 4 or 5 or 6 (or more) Floptops known as Negativland, a multimedia
collective originally from the San Francisco Bay Area, have been creating records,
CDs, video, fine art, books, radio and live performance using appropriated sounds,
images, objects, and text. Mixing original materials and original music with things
taken from corporately owned mass culture and the world around them, Negativland
surreally re-arrange these found bits and pieces to make them say and suggest
things that they never intended to. In doing this kind of cultural archaeology and
“culture jamming” (a term they coined way back in 1984), Negativland have been
sued twice for copyright infringement.
