Laura Wortman and Kagey Parrish are celebrating their 9th year of touring full time as The Honey Dewdrops, having played stages and festivals far and wide in North America and Europe. With tight harmonies and an musical ensemble that includes clawhammer banjo, mandolin and guitars, the effect is to leave listeners with only what matters: the heart of the song and clarity over ornamentation.
After leaving their home base of Virginia and living on the road for 2 years, Laura and Kagey now call Baltimore, Maryland home and it’s where they wrote and recorded their fourth full-length album, Tangled Country, released May 2015. Acoustic Guitar Magazine describes the set of songs as “a handcrafted sound centered on swarming harmonies and acoustic guitars that churn like a paddlewheel and shimmer like heat waves on the highway.” And like their stage performance, these songs rock and reel, and then they console you when you come back down.
The Honey Dewdrops have a busy year ahead of them with festival appearances across the country and a new record on the horizon (slated for release Spring of 2019) along with their first UK tour in Jan/Feb 2019.

Eavesdrop is touring from Massachusetts and is teaming up with The Paper Crowns to bring you a great night of tunes and brews from UpCountry Brewing Company! Music starts at 8PM and The Paper Crowns kick off the night!
The Paper Crowns are the multi-instrument, genre crossing power duo of Spiro and Nicole Nicolopoulos. The Paper Crowns are earning their reputation as the genuine article and as a band on the cutting edge of modern roots music. Their musical chemistry is a gumbo of Appalachian folk and bluegrass, Dixieland melodies, delta blues, acid rock, murder ballads, outlaw country and Southern Gospel that they cook up into a sound all their own. As a duo they have a full band sound with drums, bass, acoustic and electric guitars and banjo as well as live looping on the spot compositions. Their mix of modern and traditional performance creates a captivating intensity yet always honors their intimacy and emotional rawness as a duo.

Eavesdrop hails from the Northeast and provide a sound all their own; a perfect combination of soulful vocals, intricate harmonies, contagious melodies and moving rhythm. Originating as a trio, friends Kara Rose Wolf, Kerrie T. Bowden and Laura Marie Picchi maintain their vocal roots and continue to shape their sound through writing and collaborative instrumentation. Eavesdrop’s debut EP, The Afterglow, showcased the trio’s vocally charged acoustic, folk, soul roots. With their latest release, TIDES, the band has expanded into a six piece ensemble incorporating some of the pioneer valley’s finest musicians; Ross Bellenoit (Amos Lee, Sweetback Sisters) on guitar, Marc Seedorf (Dinosaur Jr, Seth Glier, Heather Maloney) on bass guitar and Sturgis Cunningham (MC Frontalot, Martin Sexton, Peter Tork) on drums and percussion. Co-produced by Alan Evans (Soulive, Matador! Soul Sounds) and Ross Bellenoit, TIDES is the band’s first full length album. It brings the listener on a ride alongside the three songbirds, taking a deeper look into the life events that fostered their creativity.

In late 2011, Matt Myers, Zak Appleby, and Shane Cody started playing music together in a historic home in New Albany, Indiana dubbed “The Green House.” Its rooms were adorned with relics from times past, so it was no surprise that songs such as “Penitentiary” bounced off the walls. Nostalgic sounds from their first album seemed to serve as a welcome escape for listeners from the relentless demands of the digital age. But if you asked any one of the guys, they were “just having fun.”
Houndmouth signed with legendary indie label Rough Trade Records in 2012. From The Hills Below The City landed them on several world-famous platforms such as fellow lovable Hoosier, David Letterman’s stage. When vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter Matt Myers first spoke with big-name producer Dave Cobb prior to working together on their sophomore LP Little Neon Limelight, the two laughingly agreed to “not make another fucking boring Americana record.” A natural sounding album captured in a familiar fashion came together, except this time with a #1 adult alternative radio single in “Sedona.”“I never once thought of us as an Americana band,” says drummer Shane Cody. “The four of us were just a rock band, but some of us had Southern accents,” he laughs.
The group find themselves on their third full length album,Golden Age, set for an August 3, 2018 release via Reprise Records, now with four new touring band members (Caleb Hickman, Drew Miller, Graeme Gardiner, and Aaron Craker – after Katie Toupin’s departure). Although there is no doubt that their perceived public identity is founded on roots and Americana, Houndmouth nevertheless created a concept album around a nostalgic future – and the sound will certainly reflect its message. The credits for Golden Age only begin to hint at the lengths they went to in order to find the sound of their nostalgic future — vintage Voxes, Vocoders and Moogs, modern programming, strings, tympani, baritone sax, live drums, Linn drums, unvarnished pianos and very distorted guitars. “What’s happening with humans and technology right now was on my mind really heavily,” says Myers, “and we naturally went that way with the music too. Using synthesizers and drum pads just kind of felt right. I feel like we went into it being like, ‘Yeah, let’s do a Bruce Springsteen/Daft Punk record’.” Myers goes on to explain, “I think the human aspects are still paramount, even though it may sound a bit more bizarre. There’s some part of Tom Petty, Randy Newman and the Band that I can’t get away from, and I wanted to keep that untouched, I guess. It’s not about trying to emulate what’s on the radio, it’s combining and messing with sounds to try to make something that seems very familiar but doesn’t actually sound like anything you’ve ever heard before.”

Joe Penland was born and raised in rural Madison County in the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina. He is the proud steward of twelve generations and over 350 years of the rich oral tradition of his Scotch and English ancestors.
From his birth, he has listened to and learned the stories and “love songs” these travelers brought with them across the ocean, then southwest to the narrow coves and high meadows that many consider the richest repository of Great Britain’s folk songs in the world .
He inherited the instruments of his grandfather who died long before his birth and was taught to play by his Aunts. He learned the “love songs” from them and the great singers of Sodom Laurel. Thee singers include Lee, Berzilla, Doug and Cas Wallin and Berzilla’s sister and brother Dellie Norton and Lloyd Chandler.
Joe was content to continue this tradition in his front room, the porch or campfires of his secluded farm. His daughter Laurin along with lifelong friends Sheila Adams, Mary Eagle and David Holt convinced him to share his life and music with a broader audience. Since then, he has appeared at numerous festivals, toured Great Britain eight times, and has been awarded the coveted Bascom Lunsford Award, named for his cousin and founder of the longest running folk festival in America, for his “significant contribution to preserving our mountain music.”
Determined that folk music includes the present as well as the past, Joe writes and sings his own “love songs,” which he calls “just more stories of love and life here in the mountains.”
Whether singing the traditional ballads of the mountains of western North Carolina or performing his original and stirring folk songs, Joe Penland’s music offers an honesty and power that is a testament to both his unique character and our shared humanity.

Hannah Furgiuele’s musical education began with an old record player in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains. A steady stream of 60s folk rock and rhythm and blues, instilled a strong foundation and sense of home. Furgiuele began to explore the roots of the music originating from the mountains that surrounded her, unearthing the remnants of old time mountain music, while cutting a clear path with both fiddle and guitar. Hannah’s sweet melodies and lyrical curiosity entwine both lore and language of Appalachia’s green mountains into accessible and tightly knit tales.

The Fantastic Violinaires of Detroit MI return The Double Crown Thursday August 30th! 10 pm $10
The Violinaires have been an institution in Detroit gospel music since 1952, appearing under a variety of names — usually the Violinaires or the Fantastic Violinaires — and being led by a number of singers, including founder Willie Banks and Robert Blair, who led the group until his death in 2001, when he was replaced by pastor Danny Walker.
The first version of the Violinaires was formed by Isaiah “Lil Shot” Jones, Leo Coney, and Wilson DeShields in 1952. Not long afterward, Providence Thomas and Raymond, Mississippi native Willie Banks joined, and the group adopted the name the Violinaires. From the outset, the membership of the group changed frequently, but Jones, Coney, and DeShields were mainstays through the ’50s.
The Violinaires made their recording debut in 1953, when “Another Soldier Gone” appeared on the local Drummond imprint. The following year, it was re-released for the secular market under the name the Question Marks by Swing Time Records, and this crossover attempt led the vocal group to pursue R&B in the late ’50s. At the peak of their R&B phase, the group featured Wilson Pickett on lead; the singer appeared on the 1957 single “Sign of the Judgment.”
By the time the Violinaires signed with the Chess subsidiary Checker in 1964, the group returned to gospel music and featured Robert Blair as the lead; Jones, Coney, and DeShields all remained in the band. The group stayed with Checker throughout the ’60s and moved to Jewel in the ’70s.
In the ’80s, the Violinaires became the Fantastic Violinaires and signed to Malaco Records. This lineup featured Blair and a selection of new vocalists: Robert Arrington, David Battle, Dwight “Tito” Arthur,” David “Bunker Hill” Walker, and Dr. Frank “Daddy” Thompson, Jr. This lineup held through the late ’80s, when the group moved to Atlantic International Records to release the successful album The Pink Tornado. During the ’90s, the lineup shifted on a semi-regular basis — Danny Walker joined during this time — as did the group’s record labels; during the ’90s, they recorded for Paula, Grammercy, Gospel Jubilee, and Universal Music.
Robert Blair led the Fantastic Violinaires until his death on March 19, 2001. In the wake of his passing, the group spun off into several incarnations, including a brief spell where Rev. Charlie Brown took Blair’s spot. The Fantastic Violinaires continued under the direction of pastor Danny Walker — they were billed as Danny Walker & the Fantastic Violinaires
