Come check out one of our favorites!!! Matt Walsh is back at Sanctuary Brewing Company! His last show in June was the talk of the town. Matt showcases a blend of rock, blues, soul, country, and about anything else you can thing of and brings it to you with an energy that will get you up out of your seat! Matt’s new album, ‘The Midnight Strain’, is available on Full Bloom Records November 10th and we’re hoping to get a sneak peak of some of the new songs!
Bio:
Matt Walsh is a singer, guitarist and songwriter from Statesville NC who performs solo or with his backup band around 200 shows a year throughout the southeast and beyond. His sound is influenced by anyone from Link Wray, Howlin’ Wolf, Prince, Black Sabbath or Pete Rock among many other musicians and styles of music. His primary focus is making original music and mixing his roots with new ideas rather than replicating them. The result reflects an exciting blend of many genres of music – early electric and hill country Blues, Rock, Rockabilly, Soul, Country, Garage Rock, Hip-Hop and Psychedelia among others. His exposure to music came first came from his mother through her love of Motown. In his youth, he was fascinated with various types of music and was always anxious when he heard a sound that was different or foreign to his ear. When he was 9 his mother took him to a Prince concert and Matt knew he wanted to be a musician.

From the heart of Mali’s Niger Delta, in his teenage years Kelly ventured to Niafunke seeking to study music with the legendary master, Ali Farka Toure. Over the past 30 years he has played beside Ali Farka Toure, accompanied Afel Bocoum as a key member of the band, Alkibar and performed with many great musicians. With an encyclopedic knowledge of Mali’s music, Kelly represents the link from great traditions to the new sophistication of Mali. Heading his own band for the past over 6 years, Kelly’s charm belies a determined professional. His song style is deceptively simple and yet subtly layered with meaning. A rich, historical awareness supports his composition and delivery, gently prodding his audiences with parables and life’s lessons learned.
What critics have said about his recent recordings and concerts:
• “At one level this is simple, quite lovely, rural-sounding music, but it is also layered and its complexity is only thinly disguised.” fROOTS #407
• “classy, at times gently hypnotic” Robin Denselow – Songlines #127
• “you’re released, flying without wings, infused with a sense of having momentarily left the planet” Dennis Rozanski, Blues Rag 2017
• “hypnotic desert blues” Bastiaan Springer, Lust for Life 2017
• “Profoundly moving music” Martin Sinnock, SONGLINES #112
• “A warm unaffected spontaneity” Mark Hudson, SONGLINES March 2014
• “Guitar lines roll so effortlessly and virtuosically that one nearly becomes immune to its brilliant elegance.” Ian Nagoski, WIRE 2014
• “The real roots of American blues and jazz” George W. Harris, Jazz Weekly

Muscadine Bloodline at The Grey Eagle
https://www.facebook.com/events/344767416270526/
Unapologetically Alabama. There’s a new force making major waves in country music. Natives of Mobile Alabama, Gary Stanton and Charlie Muncaster came together to form Muscadine Bloodline in early 2016. With three single releases under their belt and a schedule full of shows spanning from coast to coast, they’ve hit the ground running from day 1. Nashville took notice the first time these two stepped on the stage and it’s no surprise the rest of the music world is quickly catching on. Charlie’s [contemporary] vocals complimented by Gary’s harmonies and masterful guitar licks, MB is a powerfully refreshing mix of talent, passion and unfiltered authenticity. Infamously undaunted by the big stage, their sound intertwines the brash irreverence of early southern rockers with the seductive quality of 90s country love songs. Captivating hooks heard in songs like “Porch Swing Angel” and the aggressively anthemic “Shut Your Mouth” stand as a testament to MB’s wide ranging music-making capability. Every song and every show is a moving experience but at the same time, unmistakably Muscadine Bloodline.

Patrick Sweany
Nashville vocalist/guitarist Patrick Sweany doesn’t hold back on his latest studio album, Ancient Noise.
Sweany recorded the new tunes with GRAMMY® Award-winning engineer/producer Matt Ross-Spang after Ross-Spang invited Sweany to check out his new homebase at legendary Sam Phillips Recording in Memphis. The studio that Phillips had custom built in the 70s has been meticulously refurbished by the Phillips family.
“Sam Phillips Recording is the best place on earth to record a rock ‘n’ roll album,” says Sweany. “I live for going into the sessions with no pre-production rehearsals with the band, we just cut the album on the floor of Studio A song-by-song.”
For the sessions, Sweany recruited longtime collaborator Ted Pecchio on bass (Doyle Bramhall II, Col. Bruce Hampton) and ex-Wilco drummer Ken Coomer both from Nashville. When Sweany needed some organ on a song, Ross-Spang got in touch with Charles Hodges, a veteran Memphis session player best known for playing with Al Green on all of his seminal records.
Hodges fit in so well, he ended up on nearly every track on Ancient Noise. “Charles truly elevated the entire experience,” says Sweany. “In fact, when we met on the first day of recording, Charles led us through a prayer before we had even played a single note together. I’m not particularly religious, but I have to say that was quite the experience and really set the tone of the album. The music is refined, emotional, and I was taken out of my comfort zone many times, which leads to the magic you’re looking for when the tape is rolling.”
The record opens with two tracks (“Old Time Ways” and “Up & Down”) that recall the howling vocals and raw guitar work that first put Sweany on the map over a decade ago.
However, getting out of his comfort zone meant reimagining a lot of the songs Sweany had penned for Ancient Noise, none more so that the third track “Country Loving.” With Hodges’ grand piano front and center, Sweany croons like a young Tom Waits about long-term relationships, the stresses, the simple pleasures, the building of memories. It’s the most vulnerable song he’s ever recorded – and it heralds a new confidence in taking risks.
That confidence pushes through the rest of the record, where Sweany and the band delve deep into Allen Toussaint-style funk on “No Way No How,” the organ fueled “Get Along,” and “Cry Of Amédé,” which touches on the life of Amédé Ardoin, a brilliant, pioneering Creole musician who was brutally beaten in 1934 for accepting a hankerchief from a white woman.
Other tracks recall even wider influences: “Outcast Blues” has a bluesy lurch that recalls The Stones’ Exile On Main Street; “Play Around” has an early 60s do wop feel, and album closer “Victory Lap” ends with a raving coda that would make Bob Seger proud.
Ancient Noise is Patrick Sweany’s eigth full-length album, and it finds Sweany in top form, willing to push himself stylistically to great effect. The record comes out on Nine Mile Records on May 11, 2018.

Not many cover or tribute bands out there ever attempt to engage in the raw talent, mysticism, and magic that is TOOL. But if you talk to four brave souls from New York City (Angelo Rivera- Vocals; Sean Murray- Bass; Donald Pusateri- Drums; Keith Williams- Guitar). Their love and passion for this music led them to form SCHISM. The world’s first and longest touring tribute to TOOL! The ONLY Tool tribute endorsed on Tool’s websites!
“We started this back in 2001, after seeing a TOOL show at Madison Square Garden. We simply loved the music and wanted to share it live with other TOOL minded fans” says SCHISM guitarist Keith Williams. “We’ve been a national touring act for over 17 years now. This isn’t something you tap your foot to, this is more of an interactive experience for listener. These songs are compositional masterpieces, which will be studied for years. If you’ve never had the chance to see TOOL live, here’s your local opportunity”; and truly a job well done. We invite you of the collective unconscious, to share with us, the experience of TOOL.

How many artists can claim being praised a “punk rock provocateur,” “jazz vibraphone visionary” and “percussion virtuoso” in the same sentence? There’s only one: Mike Dillon. Whether through his affiliation with artists like Les Claypool, Brave Combo and Ani DiFranco, collaborations such as Garage A Trois, The Dead Kenny Gs and Critters Buggin or bands he’s fronted, including Billy Goat and Hairy Apes BMX, the Texas-native has set his own standard for 25 years now.
Pulling from an arsenal of musicians Dillon has played with and known over the years, he will be touring with some of the “baddest” musicians on the planet including Claude Coleman Jr. (Ween), Norwood Fisher (Fishbone), Doug Belote (Ernie K. Doe), Andre Chomondeley (Project Object), James SIngleton (James Booker) , Patrick McDevitt (Band Of Outsiders), Johnny Vidacovich (Professor Longhair), JJ Jungle (The Coup), David Butler (American Babies), Brad Houser (Critters Buggin), Robb Kidd (Papa Mali), and many more.
Dillon’s most recent recording Band of Outsiders was crafted at Studio Center in Miami with the help of co-producers Gary Vandy and Richard Maloney Jr. Vandy is an old school engineer whose work includes over 200 platinum records predominantly in the disco and dance genres. His love of Zappa is what attracted him to Dillon’s work. In the age of pro-tools chicanery, the production is straightforward, capturing Dillon and his band playing live in a room.
“Two tours of Mexico and a steady dose of Brazilian music was the jumping off point for these new songs,” explains Dillon. “Add our love for The Melvins, Deerhoof, Bad Brains, Dead Kennedys, Trouble Funk and all things New Orleans and this album surpasses our intention to make the freakiest, most vibrant dance music on the planet.”
Lyrically speaking, Mike Dillon draws from his love of Miguel de Cervantes, William Burroughs, Kurt Vonnegut and Robert Anton Wilson to tell stories of New Orleans debauchery mixed with age-old themes of travel, love, self-destruction and greed. Delivered with Dillon’s trademark vocal rasp, the record has the intensity of a Tom Waits-meets-Frank Zappa black comedy. Rumor has it that Dillon lived in the same apartment that Waits shared with Rickie Lee Jones for the past seven years. However, Dillon discounts those rumors: “This apartment has housed dudes from Morning 40 Federation, Ani DiFranco, an old Conga player and a bunch of heroin addicts.”
Taken in its entirety, Mike Dillon’s Band of Outsiders is a snapshot of four musicians hitting full stride. Having relentlessly toured the country in 2013—both headlining and opening for artists like Fishbone, Clutch, Primus and Galactic—its 13 songs bristle with a group mind, spill over the sides with the visions invoked during countless dead-of-night drives crisscrossing the country in a van and hit their target with a sonic assault only possible from a band that’s played 400-plus shows over the last two years.
“People are always trying to figure out how to describe our music. Maybe we should call it New Orleans punk jazz Brazilian math rock? It’s a gumbo of tribal percussion, The Meters, old school hardcore, Brazil, hard bop and anything else that might move us,” concludes Dillon. “But you know, I really don’t care what you call it. We kick out the jams harder than anyone, and we also know when to heed the lessons of The Minutemen’s Double Nickels On The Dime and keep things straight to the point. There’s a reason we called the record what we did. We’re the living, breathing definition of a band of outsiders, but together we deliver simple majestic beauty, let’s leave it at that.”

Common Center
Common Center is a 7-piece ensemble of 12-string guitar, violin, saxophone, keyboards, bass, and drums. Their compositions intermingle soft, mellifluous tones with punchy, driving rhythms—a balance between meditativeness and ferocity. The goal is transcendence.
The band writes and records in Covington, Kentucky (across the river from Cincinnati). Their influences range from progressive rock and folk roots to classical music, gypsy grooves, and avant-garde groups from around the world. The lyrics explore themes of consciousness, friendship, and inter-dimensional travel. Poetry intertwines with operatic swells and occasional, dream-like overtones. Multi-part vocal and instrumental harmonies have the power to both lull and invigorate listeners.
2018 brings the release of the five-track EP, “To Swallow Something Half Your Size”, with a second EP due in December. They are bonded by their collective ambition to create original music and share it with audiences everywhere.

Italian-born Valerio D’Ospina, widely considered one of America’s foremost contemporary artists, is the subject of a one-man exhibition at The Haen Gallery in downtown Asheville, NC. The exhibit will run through October 15.
Since July 2009, D’Ospina has been established in the US where he lives and works in Philadelphia. He is ranked by both national and international distinguished art magazines as one of the most significant painters of cityscapes and industrial scenarios in America. “Valerio D’Ospina: Patina of Energy” will open with more that than a dozen paintings that capture the pulse of the city, the energy of industry, and the patina of metropolitan life.
