The first show of the Playhouse’s 2020 season is sure to rock your world with Music on the Rock® The Music of Queen. Dustin Brayley and Ryan Guerra join forces with Nat Zegree for the first time on the Leiman Mainstage along with Music on the Rock® favorites Eric Anthony, Paul Babelay, and Ryan Dunn. The Music of Queen will feature all your favorite hits from the legendary rock group like “We Will Rock You,” “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Another One Bites The Dust,” and more!

When Kamasi Washington released his tour de force LP, The Epic, in 2015, it instantly set him on a path as our generation’s torch bearer for progressive, improvisational music that would open the door for young audiences to experience music unlike anything they had heard before. The 172-minute odyssey featuring his 10-piece band, The Next Step, was littered with elements of hip-hop, classical and R&B music, all major influences on the young saxophonist and bandleader, who exceeds any notions of what “jazz” music is. Released to critical acclaim, The Epic won numerous awards, including the inaugural American Music Prize and the Gilles Peterson Worldwide album of the year. Washington followed that work with collaborations with other influential artists such as Kendrick Lamar, John Legend, Run the Jewels, Ibeyi and the creation of “Harmony of Difference,” a standalone multimedia installation during the prestigious 2017 Biennial at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City. In June 2018, Washington released Heaven and Earth to wide praise. The album garnered “best of” awards from Pitchfork, NPR, Variety, GQ, MOJO, and Complex among others. Collaborating with cutting edge filmmakers Bradford Young, Jenn Nkiru, Terence Nance, and Marc Thomas, Washington helped direct AS TOLD TO G/D THYSELF, a film inspired by Heaven and Earth which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2019. The film has also screened at The Broad, Stony Island Arts Bank, The Apollo Theater, and 180 The Strand in London.

One of the funniest musicals ever written. Sondheim’s joyous musical romp through Rome has desperate lovers, scheming neighbors and secrets behind every toga. This unforgettable, hysterical musical allows a terrify ensemble of comedic actors to shine!

Matthew Richmond of UNC Asheville’s music faculty will perform his own original works for percussion, together with many guest artists, at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 16 in Lipinsky Auditorium. This concert is free and open to everyone.

Richmond, a percussionist, composer, recording artist, and educator who can’t stick to one genre, is perhaps best known for his work on vibes, and he will perform an extended original composition written for vibes and percussion. Joining Richmond will be guest artists Kevin “Kalimbaman” Spears, percussionists Jordan Arnold, Jason DeCristofaro, Diana Loomer, Victoria Nelson, Kari Richmond and Justin Watt, and vocalist Christine Boone.

Matthew Richmond Bio

Matthew Richmond appears most frequently with Like Mind Trio and the Asheville Symphony Orchestra and has extensive experience in classical music, rock, funk, jazz, Latin music, and marching percussion. He contributed vibraphone and percussion to Infinity Plus One by Secret Agent 23 Skidoo, which won the 2017 Grammy Award for Best Children’s Album. He has also performed and/or recorded with Jonathan Scales, Steve Reich, Gordon Stout, Lizz Wright, Jeff Sipe, Billy Jonas, Kevin Spears, Kat Williams, and many others.

Matthew loves musical theater, and has played more than 70 local and regional productions from Amélie to Zombie Prom. He served as music director of TheaterUNCA’s productions of Into the Woods and Marat/Sade, and for the latter he composed an original score. He has also composed and directed music for dance and drama performances by Asheville Ballet, Norte Marr, Black Swan Theatre, and The Road Company, and created the score for the feature film Flight of the Cardinal (Gaston Pictures).

Visitor Parking on the UNC Asheville Campus – Visitors may park in faculty/staff and non-resident lots from 5:00 p.m. until 7:30 a.m., Monday through Friday, and on weekends, holidays, and campus breaks. Visitors are not permitted to park in resident student lots at any time.

ABBA The Concert visits Brevard as part of its popular BMC Presents series, which brings a diverse range of non-classical artists to the festival stage. In 2020, the series will also host guitarist Bryan Sutton, folk legend Judy Collins, the bluegrass-inspired sounds of Woody Platt and Shannon Whitworth, and the return of award-winning banjo virtuoso Bela Fleck.

Entire towns have been engulfed in flames, and residents across several states have lost their homes. The heaviest structural damage occurred in NSW, the country’s most populated state, where 1,588 homes have been destroyed and over 650 damaged.

In total, more than 7.3 million hectares (17.9 million acres) have been burned across Australia’s six states — an area larger than the countries of Belgium and Denmark combined.

Although recent cooler conditions and rain have brought some respite, more than 50 fires are still burning in the states of New South Wales and Victoria.

At least 33 people have been killed — including four firefighters — and more than 11 million hectares (110,000 sq km or 27.2 million acres) of bush, forest and parks across Australia has burned.

Conceived in Finland in 1989, dark rockers THE 69 EYES have come a long way and shaped the genre of ‘Goth ‘n’ Roll’ like no other. With several platinum selling albums like »Blessed Be« and »Paris Kills« released around the millennium, the quintet not only reached #1 of the single and album charts in their home country of Finland, but also plunged the world into their sinful cosmos of love, death and eternal melancholy and outlived any other band emerging from the goth hype of the early 2000s. By developing their sound further into sleaze rock on »Devils« (2004) and »Angels« (2007) and not shying away from pitch black Elvis allusions in singer Jyrki 69’s majestic dark voice and unique dance moves on stage, the band established their worldwide following by relentlessly touring Europe, America, Asia and Australia.

Presenting a thrilling, percussive dance and music spectacle, Argentinian company Che Malambo excites audiences through precise footwork, rhythmic stomping, drumming bombos, and whirling boleadoras. This powerhouse all-male company celebrates the unique South American cowboy tradition of the gaucho.

The Malambo, traditionally danced by men, began in the 17^th century as competitive duels that would challenge skills of agility, strength, and dexterity. Zapateo, their fast-paced footwork, is inspired by the rhythm of galloping horses in their native Argentina. Che Malambo brings fiery Malambo traditions and virtuosic dancing to the contemporary stage for an exhilarating and entertaining show that is perfect for the whole family.

Jesse Kardon, better known as Subtronics, is a 24-year-old Philadelphia born dubstep producer specializing in all things robotic. His work is heavily influenced by the likes of Rusko, Skism, Tomba and Downlink, and the collective efforts of the underground dubstep community.Taking on a core group of followers over SoundCloud in the first few years, he has grown exponentially in the past few months, gaining support from a plethora of bass music legends. Subtronic’s signature bouncy yet mechanical sound design is matched by his incredibly recognizable flow, setting him apart from the vast sea of up and coming producers around the world.

Subtronics has recently collaborated with the likes of Uber, MurDa, Ecraze, and Samplifire, adding to his already expansive solo discography, garnering him attention from major labels. This continued growth resulted in one of his most successful collaborations to date in the form of a remix of “Thief” by Ookay which he put together with trap up and comer Bailo. The track was played out at every major festival in the summer of 2016, being supported by the likes of Adventure Club, Knife Party, 12th Planet, and many others. In 2017 Subtronics is set to release several debut EP’s on some of the biggest labels in bass music. There doesn’t seem to be any obstacle imaginable that could slow down this young computer nerds continual rise into bass music glory.

Drew and Ellie Holcomb are a husband and wife Americana duo from Nashville, TN. Shortly after their marriage in 2006, the couple began touring together with Drew Holcomb and The Neighbors. The band has supported many national touring acts including Ryan Adams, The Avett Brother, Don Henley, and Willie Nelson.

Ellie is no longer a touring member of “The Neighbors,” and has found success in a solo career as a Christian singer/songwriter. Her albums As Sure As The Sun and Red Sea Road have both topped the iTunes Christian chart.

Drew Holcomb still tours nationally with Drew Holcomb and The Neighbors and their most recent album, Dragons, is their most critically acclaimed release yet.

An Evening with Drew and Ellie Holcomb is a special engagement event, allowing the Holcombs to collaborate once again.

Eric Gales grew up in a musical family with four brothers, two of them who learned to play the guitar upside down and left handed in the same fashion that Eric does. Eric’s brother Eugene Gales played bass in the Eric Gales Band and his brother Little Jimmy King had a thriving career as a blues artist before his untimely death. Eric released his first record at Age 16 for Elektra records to an amazing response from the media and music fans around the globe. Guitar World Magazine’s Reader’s Poll named Eric as “Best New Talent,” in 1991. After recording a second record for Elektra, all three brothers teamed up for The Gales Bros. “Left Hand Brand” which was recorded for the House of Blues label in 1996.

Through the years, it would not be unusual to look out in the audience and see artists like Carlos Santana, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, B. B. King, and Eric Clapton, looking on with interest as Eric took his God-given talent and worked crowd after crowd into a frenzy. The new Millennium presented new opportunities for Eric and he was signed to a deal with Nightbird Records which was affiliated with the Hendrix family and distributed through MCA/Universal. Under this deal, Eric recorded the critically acclaimed record “That’s What I Am” in 2001 and hit the road, mesmerizing fans around the world with his uncanny connection to his guitar. In 2006 Eric recorded the critically acclaimed CD “Crystal Vision” for Blues Bureau and set the stage for his incredible Blues Bureau follow-up, “The Psychedelic Underground.” in 2007. Eric followed sharply in 2008 with “The Story of my Life” and in 2010 hit a new stride altogether with the incredibly successful album “Relentless”. That album combined with his latest studio album “Transformation” released in 2011 set the stage for his upcoming Double Live Album/DVD due in October of 2012.

As both an African-American left-handed guitarist of extraordinary ability and an expressive vocalist, it is natural for people to compare Eric to Hendrix but Eric has developed a unique hybrid blues/rock sound that also draws upon influences as diverse as Albert King and Eric Johnson. A unique amalgam of styles, Eric Gales stands head and shoulders among other guitarists in his genre.”
