Nature Across the Carolinas: Fiber Art with Quilts
Aug 31 all-day
NC Arboretum

This exhibit showcases the work of three leading fiber artists who explore Western North Carolina’s mountains, meadows and marshes using fabrics and fibers. Their quilted wall art offers a link to familiar images of this region, echoing the Arboretum’s role of connecting people with plants. Through their diverse styles, construction methods and subject matter, artists Mary Stori, Judy Simmons and Kate Weston add a contemporary twist to the area’s rich and storied quilt-making tradition. Their exhibit features  pieces of varying sizes, from large focal-point wall hangings to medium-sized wall art to small work suitable for tabletop display. All pieces are for sale, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting The North Carolina Arboretum Society.

About the Artists

Mary Stori

From her home in Clyde, N.C., Mary creates botanical and organic themed art quilts using artisian-made, hand-dyed cotton, linen, silk and rayon fabrics. She also utilizes hand-felted and hand-dyed wool as rich backdrops, offering texture and depth to her work. Bead embellishment is another one of her trademarks. Learn more on her website.

Judy Simmons

Judy creates her own fabric in her Fletcher, N.C. studio using surface design techniques, including fabric marbling, dyeing, color lifting and silk screening. Much of the imagery in her work utilizes her own photography printed on fabric. To learn more about Judy, please click here.

Kate Weston

From her home in Statesville, N.C., Kate focuses on the creation of complex cloth through the application of dye, paint and embellishment, such as fabric overlay or manipulation and the application of non-fiber materials.  Coupled with skillful machine quilting, Kate’s works create and stunning interplay of color and texture. Please visit Kate’s website to learn more.

In Times of Seismic Sorrows

Carbon emissions, water pollution, fracking, and changing climate patterns all point to a troubling reality with serious consequences for human and non-human populations. Through weavings, installations, sculpture, and print, artists Rena Detrixhe and Tali Weinberg (Tulsa, OK) explore the complex relationship between humans and the planet, offering insights, expressing grief, and creating space for resilience and change.

In Time of Seismic Sorrows is curated by Marilyn Zapf and organized by the Center for Craft. The Center for Craft is supported in part by the N.C. Arts Council, a division of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.

SAHC works to conserve the unique plant and animal habitat, clean water, farmland, scenic beauty, and places for people to enjoy outdoor recreation in the mountains of North Carolina and Tennessee for the benefit of present and future generations. We achieve this by forging and maintaining long-term conservation relationships with private landowners and public agencies, owning and managing land and encouraging healthy local communities. Every year, we lose thousands of lives to drug overdose across the globe, and hundreds right here in Buncombe County. International Overdose Awareness day is an annual event aimed at honoring those lost, as well as a call to action. Join your local Asheville community on August 31st as we recognize the devastating impact of the opioid epidemic and learn about services that are available to help put an end to this crisis.

The Asheville event will take place from 5-8pm at Pack Square Park and will include:

Speakers from our partners at Buncombe County Public Health, North Carolina Harm Reduction Coalition, SeekHealing, The Steady Collective, Local Policy Makers, and more
Personal Testimonials
Public call for names to honor
Naloxone Training and distribution
Candleligt Vigil
Music by local artist Asher Leigh

Through education, community outreach, and support, we can make a difference.

A huge thank you to our organizers at The Steady Collective, North Carolina Harm Reduction Coalition, Western North Carolina AIDS Project, and SeekHealing

PATIO SHOW :: Paul Edelman at The Grey Eagle
Aug 31 @ 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm
The Grey Eagle

FREE PATIO SHOW :: Paul Edelman at The Grey Eagle

Almost born on the airplane from Columbus, Ohio, where his family lived, to Philadelphia, because his mom, a native of Philly, only trusted one doctor. Then the infant Edelman was flown right back to Columbus. “I was a very serious kid, and I think that’s why. That’s a lot of stress for a baby.” His best friend in Columbus was a weeping willow tree. From there Paul’s family moved to the north shore of Long Island, one of the natural habitats to the privileged dirtbag.” There was a lot of money in that town, we stood out like sore thumbs.” His family was always musical. Paul’s uncle narrowly avoided success when he refused to sell one of his songs to Joe Cocker.” Everyone in the family had talent, my mom had a beautiful voice.”

Paul spent a year at Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh before settling into Philly. Paul spent years hosting open mics all through town, meeting folks and drawing influence from his peers. ” My strongest asset is the ability to surround myself with people that are better than me.” Eventually, Paul began connecting with some serious players with real ambition and talent. Paul found himself being a sought after player in town. “One of my first bandmates insists that I invented the term Grunge as a musical genre.” He learned how to give other songwriters what their songs needed, and in so doing, was learning how to craft his own music with unique vision.

Paul was a Boxcar, a Butcher Holler Boy and lead guitar for Naked Omaha, three of the hottest tickets in town, simultaneously. It was no surprise then when Paul broke out on his own with the Jangling Sparrows, he was selling out the World Cafe and sharing bills with James McMurtry, Robert Earl Keen and Langhorn Slim.

Tough and tender, from a holler to a whisper. from timeless, original, Soul, Folk and Country to ferocious twang rock.

Paul has also shared stages with: The Drive By Truckers, Neko Case, Scott Miller, Big Sandy and his Flyrite Boys, Slim Cessna, Marah, The Bottlerockets, The Sadies, and if you include stage crashing, Sarah Mclaughlin, Chrissie Hind, Cheryl Crow and the Dixie Chicks.

“Edelman makes short work of simple but effective lyrics, driving percussion, searing guitars and hooky melodies….Hints of Springsteen and Mellencamp are balanced with Edelman’s original sound; an imperfect but comfortable voice and addictive narrative songs” —Alli Marshal-Mountain Xpress
