Donor Turnout Hits Historic Low

The Blood Connection extends collection hours in response to urgent need

The Blood Connection, the community blood center, is seeing historically low blood donor turnout and has extended its center hours in response to this urgent need. According to the latest TBC data, local hospitals have consumed twice as much blood as the community has donated. If this trend continues, it could cause a blood rationing event or blood shortage for hospitals in this community. Donation centers are now open earlier and later to accommodate more blood donors.

Kids Fishing Tournament at Charles D. Owen Park
Apr 17 @ 8:30 am
Charles D. Owen Park

It’s a sport, a hobby, a profession, a skill! Fishing crosses all gender, cultural, and economic lines. For some, it’s about catching the biggest fish, for others it’s the quantity. The adrenaline rush and pride when a line is pulled in is the same either way.

Buncombe County Recreation Services spring kids fishing tournament at Charles D. Owen Park (875 Warren Wilson Rd. in Swannanoa) on Saturday, Apr. 17. The tournament is open to anyone 15 years-old or younger. Competitors are divided into age groups with prizes in each for Biggest Fish, Smallest Fish, Most Fish Caught, and Most Accurate Casting Skills.

Current North Carolina guidelines to slow the spread of COVID-19 and save lives will be enforced.

“Fishing builds confidence, improves coordination, teaches patience, and encourages an appreciation of nature,” said Mac Stanley, Outdoors Coordinator for Buncombe County Recreation Services. “This tournament is a great way to introduce our younger residents to healthier lifestyles and decrease screen time – at least for a little while.”

As a catch and release tournament, fish are released back into the lake after they have been weighed and measured. Registration is $10 per competitor and includes a bucket, bait, snacks and drinks, and an I Heart Parks sports bottle. Participants bring their own poles.

Preregistration is available and recommended. On-site registration will begin at 8 a.m. the day of the tournament. Fishing commences at 8:30 a.m. and ends promptly at 11:30 a.m. No fishing license is required for North Carolina residents under 16 years old. No boat fishing is allowed during the tournaments.

Competitors are also encouraged to bring non-perishable healthy grains, protein, fruits, and vegetables from MANNA FoodBank’s Most Needed Food List.

American Rescue Plan Act Impacts to COBRA Health Insurance
Apr 17 @ 6:29 pm – 7:29 pm
Online w/ Henderson County Chamber of Commerce
Constangy, Brooks, Smith & Prophete has shared guidance on the impacts to COBRA resulting from the American Rescue Plan Act through their Legal Bulletin #876.
According to the bulletin: if an individual became or becomes eligible for COBRA because of an involuntary change in status, and if the individual has any eligibility left between April 1 and September 30, 2021, and if the individual doesn’t have other coverage available through a spouse’s employment or the individual’s new employment, then he or she will get “free” COBRA coverage. The employer then can recoup the costs with a credit on payroll taxes. The plan sponsor will have to do a great deal of administrative work figuring out how to send which notice to which individuals.
Employer-sponsored health plans will be required to provide six months of “free” COBRA coverage to most plan participants who
  • Are eligible for COBRA continuation coverage, and
  • Lose coverage because of involuntary employment termination or reduction in hours.
The Plan must inform the eligible individual about the new benefit and provide the option to sign up for what amounts to a premium waiver for the six-month period. An employee or former employee will be eligible for this “free” coverage benefit if any of the following apply during the April 1-September 30 time period:
  • The individual becomes eligible for COBRA coverage
  • The individual currently has COBRA coverage,
  • The individual would have been eligible for COBRA coverage but declined it
  • And the individual is not eligible for other coverage, including through new employment or a spouse’s plan.

Johnson + Johnson COVID Vaccine Update from Pardee UNC Health Care
Apr 18 all-day
Blue Ridge Community College
Out of an abundance of caution and in light of recent calls by the US FDA and CDC to pause the use of Johnson & Johnson (J&J) COVID-19 vaccine, Pardee will not be scheduling any new appointments for this vaccine until further information is available and the few instances of serious side effects among those who have received the vaccine can be investigated.
The FDA made the decision to pause dosing after 6 women from across the US developed a rare type of blood clot involving the brain within days of receiving the vaccine. Although these events were very rare and it is still unclear if the clots were related to the vaccine, dosing with the J&J vaccine is being stopped while they are fully investigated.
If you have received the J&J vaccine and develop severe headache, abdominal pain, leg pain, or shortness of breath within three weeks after vaccination, please contact your health care provider.
Pardee UNC Health Care is able to offer vaccination appointments for the Pfizer vaccine at Blue Ridge Community College. The Pfizer vaccine has not been linked to blood clots and has been given to many more people. If you would like a Pfizer vaccine, please visit yourshot.org/ or call Call (828) 694-8222 to schedule that appointment.
