Elemental Chakra Awakening Series
Oct 31 @ 7:15 pm – 9:15 pm
Violet Owl Wellness

“Everything is energy and that’s all there is to it. Match the frequency of the reality you want and you cannot help but get that reality. It can be no other way. This is not philosophy. This is physics.” –Albert Einstein

This series will guide us to clear, activate and connect with the main chakras or energetic centers of the body creating space to understand yoga deeper as a holistic medicine. On 120 min classes we will explore the energetic yoga alignment, connect with the lines and centers of energy and clear the pranic flow in body-mind-spirit compound. The series is an infusion of asana or other movement, meditation, mudras, breathwork, voice activation, journaling, pair exercises and techniques to help us to access the unconscious body wisdom connected to each chakra.

The series empowers you to create a conversation with the subtle layers of consciousness and discover tools to integrate it all into your daily interactions with the world. Embodied awareness of yoga energetics truly deepens sadhana, the personal practice for Self-growth, and empowers you to step up as an alchemist of your own life.

Oct 31st: Root chakra, earth element, energy stagnation in physical body, grounding and centering yin yoga practice

Nov 7th: Sacral chakra, water element, moving meditation and somatic dance inspired yoga, emotional body practices

Nov 14th: Solar Plexus chakra, fire element, mental “stories” or samskaras, ceremonial detoxifying and releasing yoga practice

Nov 21st: Heart chakra, air element, empowerment and unconditional love, pranayama and heart opening yoga practice

Nov 28th: Throat chakra, ether element, pure communication and power of choice, voice-activating yoga practice

Dec 5th: Third Eye and Crown chakras, higher mind, visions and aura awareness, yoga practice and a drum journey to activate pineal and pituitary glands.

After every class, you will receive an optional and personalized home practice suggestion to deepen the connection with each chakra and support the natural process of purification and balancing. The energetic yoga practice never really ends, thus, the series holds container for both experienced practitioners and those who are in the beginning of their yoga path.

The series is shared by Sanni, with a deep practice of yoga (E-RYT 500), meditation, Reiki energy- and bodywork, cleansing techniques, core-shamanism and intuitive dance. With humble heart, she carries the medicine of elemental initiations, rituals and ceremony to allow the deeper wisdom of Self to unfold. Sanni holds space for internal and external transformation at retreats, facilitates Yoga Teacher Trainings at the Kula Collective and works with several projects to empower local communities in different countries.

“With all my heart, I welcome you to share the practice with me and allow the ancient, yet so present wisdom of yoga energetics to flow through for the highest benefit of all.”

DWEEZIL ZAPPA “CHOICE CUTS!” WORLD TOUR 2018

There’s no stopping Dweezil Zappa from continuing his mission to unlock the mysteries held within the superabundance of Frank Zappa’s iconic music. For over a decade, the renowned guitarist has been honoring his father by touring the world with his Grammy-winning project, now named Dweezil Zappa.

Dweezil’s 13th annual tour is called “Choice Cuts!” and he has curated an all new show filled with some of Frank Zappa’s boldest compositions or as Dweezil says, “A collection of the meatiest tracks,” with which he plans to satiate the appetite of Zappa fans, old and new.

Hitting the US hard, with blistering instrumental compositions spanning as many decades as time signatures, Zappa and his band will whip up doo-wop and dada accented with funk and blues then scramble back and forth through late 60’s, on through mid-70’s fan favorites, then pulsate forward into the vortex of Frank Zappa’s classical oeuvre, for a “protein enriched program designed to create new awareness of the depth and variety of my dad’s music.”

The Orb are an English electronic music group known for spawning the genre of ambient house. Founded in 1988 by Alex Paterson and KLF member Jimmy Cauty, The Orb began as ambient and dub DJs in London. Its early performances were inspired by ambient and electronic artists of the 1970s and 1980s, most notably Brian Eno and Kraftwerk. Because of its trippy sound, the Orb developed a cult following among clubbers “coming down” from drug-induced highs. The Orb has maintained its drug-related and science fiction themes despite personnel changes including the departure of Cauty and other Orb members Kris Weston, Andy Falconer, Simon Phillips, and Andy Hughes. Paterson has been the only permanent member, continuing to work as the Orb with the Swiss-German producer Thomas Fehlmann and, later, with Killing Joke’s Martin “Youth” Glover and Tim Bran of Dreadzone.

Alex Paterson prides the Orb on manipulating obscure samples beyond recognition on its albums and during its concerts; however, his unauthorised use of other artists’ works has led to disputes with musicians, most notably with Rickie Lee Jones and Steve Reich. During its live shows of the 1990s, the Orb performed using digital audio tape machines optimised for live mixing and sampling before switching to laptops and digital media. Despite changes in performance method, the Orb maintained its colourful light shows and psychedelic imagery in concert. These visually intensive performances prompted critics to compare the group to Pink Floyd.

The Orb’s critical and commercial success in the United Kingdom peaked in the early 1990s with the albums The Orb’s Adventures Beyond The Ultraworld and U.F.Orb, the latter of which reached #1 on the British album charts in 1992. This success led to its infamous appearance on Top of the Pops, where the group showcased its quirky style by playing chess (an interest of Paterson’s since his early youth) while the group’s single “Blue Room” ran in the background. The Orb’s mid-1990s albums were met with mixed reactions from British critics; however, its work received praise from American publications such as Rolling Stone. The group experimented with vocalists on its next two albums, which critics generally described as bland and uninspired. The Orb then shifted gears to a minimal techno style spearheaded by member Thomas Fehlmann, releasing its new material on the record label Kompakt.

FROST/NIXON
Nov 1 all-day
North Carolina Stage Company

Wednesdays – Saturdays at 7:30pm and Sunday Matinees at 2:00pm
Additional Saturday Matinees on October 27 and November 3, 2018
British talk-show host David Frost has become a lowbrow laughingstock. Richard M. Nixon has just resigned the United States presidency in total disgrace over Vietnam and the Watergate scandal. Determined to resurrect his career, Frost risks everything on a series of in-depth interviews in order to extract an apology from Nixon. The cagey Nixon, however, is equally bent on redeeming himself in his nation’s eyes. In the television age, image is king, and both men are desperate to out-talk and upstage each other as the cameras roll. The result is the interview that sealed a president’s legacy.

“Structured as a prize fight between two starkly ambitious men in professional crisis, FROST/NIXON makes it clear that the competitor who controls the camera reaps the spoils.” —NY Times.

Reclaimed Creations
Nov 1 @ 8:00 am – 6:00 pm
NC Arboretum

Reclaimed Creations is a unique sculpture exhibit created by renowned artist Sayaka Ganz. Utilizing reclaimed plastic objects, such as discarded utensils, Ganz creates amazing sculptures that visually appear unified at a distance, but are in fact separated when examined up close. Described as using a “3D impressionistic” style, Ganz’s exhibit includes installations of animals in motion, which are in rich in color and energy, to create an illusion of form.

About the Artist

Born in Yokohama, Japan, Sayaka Ganz grew up living in Japan, Brazil and Hong Kong. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Indiana University, Bloomington, and a Master of Fine Arts degree in sculpture from Bowling Green State University in Ohio. A lecturer and teacher, Ganz’s work has been displayed at various institutions around the globe, including the Hermann Geiger Foundation in Cecina, Italy, the Isle Gallery in Isle of Man, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium in California.

My work is about perceiving harmony, even in situations that appear chaotic from the inside. When observing my sculptures up close, one might see gaps, holes and items being held on only by small points; step away, however, and the sculptures reveal the harmony created when the objects are aligned to the same general (but not identical) direction. Similarly, it is important to gain perspective by stepping back from current problems and look at the larger picture. Then one can perceive the beauty and patterns that exist.”

A Sense of Place: Interpretations by Kari Morton and Lauren Rutten
Nov 1 @ 10:00 am – 4:00 pm
Flow Gallery

Show runs through November 7
Hours: Tuesday through Saturday, 10am – 4pm

This beautiful exhibit celebrates the works of photographer Lauren Rutten and quilter Kari Morton. What these two artists share in common are a partnership in the five-woman, artist-owned Flow Gallery in historic downtown Marshall, and a deep love of Madison County, their newly chosen home.

In 2015, Lauren and her husband Andy, traveled the US for one year searching for a home. “From the very moment I arrived in Marshall while on this journey, I had a sense of having dreamt of this place since childhood – I knew this was where I wanted to be.

I have found that my life here is not confined within four walls, so I’m very interested in reflections, when the light shines through a structure, or a barn begins to dilapidate so the outside and inside merge.

Marshall finds itself in a season of change. Many families who are moving here to homestead live alongside families who have farmed here for generations. This collection hopes to show the range of those who have come to call Marshall home, as well as the hard reality of homesteading and its immense beauty, which are in direct relationship with each other here. In this land I dig my hands in the earth and muddy my feet on the ground, while at the same time experiencing the transcendence of being and connecting to so much beyond my body. I hope those who view these photos might experience this too.”

Kari and her husband, Mike, moved to Madison County in 2012, after having lived a fairly nomadic life. They decided Madison County was the place to put down roots and call home.

“This collection is inspired by my immediate world, the things I live with and the things I see – the garden in my front yard, the chickens in the back yard, the buildings in downtown Marshall, where I spend many hours working at Flow and serving as a guardian ad litem in the county courthouse. Each of my pieces tell a story of connection, to my community, to my world. I love sharing this part of myself with others.”

Flow Gallery is located on Main Street in the historic, picturesque town of Marshall, which lies along the French Broad River, just 25 minutes north of Asheville, NC. The gallery is in its 8th year of business and showcases the work of over 65 talented, regional artists.

Food for Kids with Merrell at Mast Store Hendersonville
Nov 1 @ 10:00 am – 6:00 pm

Bullying is part of many conversations today when we talk about kids, but have you ever thought about the biggest bully around? It’s not the kid that’s taller or meaner than the rest; it’s hunger.

Mast Store and Merrell are teaming up with food security partners in all of our communities to take on that bully by providing Food for Kids. From October 22 until November 4, when you purchase a pair of Merrell Footwear at Mast Store, Merrell will make a donation to our local partner to fill backpacks with kid-friendly food for the weekend, a time when kids don’t have access to food or a means of feeding themselves.

At the Mast Store in Hendersonville, as well as Asheville and Waynesville, we are partnering with the MANNA FoodBank. With its help, teachers discretely give backpacks to students on Friday that are returned for refilling on Mondays.

It’s easy to help — just purchase a pair of Merrell shoes, and they’ll make a donation on your behalf. AND you can also contribute to the change jars at the register. Let’s stand up to the hunger bully!

In Times of Seismic Sorrows
Nov 1 @ 10:00 am – 6:00 pm

When reflecting on the current state of the environment, it seems that we have entered into times of seismic sorrows. Carbon emissions, water pollution, fracking, and changing climate patterns all point to a troubling reality with serious consequences for human and non-human populations. Through weavings, installations, sculpture, and print, artists Rena Detrixhe and Tali Weinberg (Tulsa, OK) explore the complex relationship between humans and the planet, offering insights, expressing grief, and creating space for resilience and change.

In Time of Seismic Sorrows is curated by Marilyn Zapf and organized by the Center for Craft. The Center for Craft is supported in part by the N.C. Arts Council, a division of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.
