Volunteers for the National Bicycle + Pedestrian Documentation Project

Haywood Rd and Brevard Rd

Volunteers from the Asheville Bicycle and Pedestrian Task Force, Asheville on Bikes, the Blue Ridge Bicycle Club, and more have worked with representatives of the City of Asheville for 10 years to find out how many people are walking and bicycling in various locations around the city. You can help!

This year, in coordination with the National Bicycle and Pedestrian Documentation Project, we will count non-motorized users of our streets at a number of specific sites from 5-7 p.m. on one of the following dates:

*Tuesday, September 15th, OR

*Wednesday, September 16th, OR

*Thursday, September 17th.

There are also a few sites available from 7-9 a.m. on those days, and a few sites that are counted on Saturday, September 19th from 9-11 a.m. Volunteer hours are extremely valuable in this effort.  No special skills are required, but we will make sure you know how to do the count before we send you out there.  Sign up at Bike/Ped Site Registration or if you have questions, email [email protected].

To start, we will be holding fast to safety precautions listed below. As the CDC and NC governmental regulations soften, we will follow suit. Please know that we are making every effort to keep both our vendors and our community safe and well.

*No-contact payment: Tap’n’Pay , Venmo, Paypal payments only. No cash payments or card swipes will be accepted.
*Handwashing station upon entering Market
*Limited shopper numbers (car queue will be used, if necessary)
*1 customer at vendor table at a time
*Only touch what you are purchasing
*6ft Social Distancing required
*Masks highly encouraged. All vendors and Market staff will wear masks.
*No Music or Kids tent (yet)
*No craft/artisan vendors until non-essential businesses are allowed to open. We are hopeful this will be by June, or earlier.

Guided Walk in Historic Oakdale Cemetery

Join a guided tour of Historic Oakdale Cemetery, Hendersonville’s municipal cemetery which whispers stories of the town’s early days. The famous Italian marble monument which inspired the title of Thomas Wolfe’s novel Look Homeward, Angel is in Oakdale, along with both marked and unmarked graves of historic figures. The heritage of the local African-American community is told in the Black section of the cemetery, while the designated Jewish cemetery reveals how the town grew to embrace ethnic and religious groups through the years. How and why the cemetery was created, names of those who helped build the town and where they were laid to rest, where the Sunshine Lady is buried, and more questions will be answered. The walk will begin at 10 a.m. in the cemetery, two miles west of downtown on U.S. 64 at Valley St. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, space is limited and reservations are required. Participants should wear a cloth face covering. Phone history walk leader Mary Jo Padgett at 828-545-3179 to make a reservation. Private tours for small groups can be arranged anytime.

Equity underlies everything we do. We serve immigrants, low-wealth, and disadvantaged individuals of every age. We know that literacy is the primary determinant of health, employment, income levels, and constructive self-expression. In 2017, the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) found that sixty percent of children nationwide are not reading proficiently. Without intervention children who do not read proficiently become adults with low literacy and the cycle continues. Our one-on-one and small group tutoring is free and based on students’ schedules, making it accessible to those who would otherwise be unable to afford or attend traditional classroom settings.

Guided History Walk in 7th Ave./Historic Depot District

Hendersonville City Hall

Meander through this historic part of town encircling the old Railroad Depot. When the first steam locomotive arrived in Hendersonville on July 4, 1879, crammed with tourists and visitors from the low country of South Carolina, it was the beginning of an exciting era of big-band music, dancing, numerous inns and hotels, much real estate trading, and huge agricultural growth. Money was made and lost, famous musicians and sports figures came calling, delicious food was enjoyed at every inn and boarding house … Hendersonville was in its hey-day from that moment until the financial crash of 1929. This neighborhood boasted many businesses run by Black and white owners. Let’s hear about it. The walk will start at 10 a.m. at the front steps of City Hall, corner of Fifth Avenue E. and King St. . Due to COVID-19 restrictions, space is limited and reservations are required. Participants should wear a cloth face covering.
