WHAT: Movie Screening – FIVE SEASONS: The Gardens of Piet Oudolf
DATE: Thursday, October 25
TIME: 7 p.m.
WHERE: 36 Montford Avenue – Lenoir-Rhyne University, just off I-240 near downtown Asheville.
Doors open at 6:30, Program starts at 7 p.m., Discussion follows movie
Revolutionary landscape designer Piet Oudolf is known for designing public works like New York City’s popular High Line and the Lurie Garden in Chicago’s Millennium Park that redefine our conception of gardens as works of art in themselves. This gorgeous, meditative documentary immerses viewers in his work, taking us inside Oudolf’s creative process. From his aesthetic theories to his strikingly abstract sketches to the ecological implications of his ideas, the film poetically reveals how Oudolf upends conventional notions of nature, public space, and, ultimately, beauty itself.
Piet Oudolf’s unique vision has influenced contemporary landscape designers and gardeners, contemporary plant palettes, and led us to perceive many native American plants through a different lens. Reems Creek Nursery is thrilled to share this inspirational movie with our gardening community! Please pass the word along to your gardener friends, garden designers, landscape architects, architects and all interested parties. We already have folks traveling from Winston-Salem for this screening.

Todd Hoke returns to Sanctuary Brewing Company on the 1st Day of November for a Thursday Night Special! We love Todd Hoke and know you will too!
Todd Hoke was born in Conroe, Texas (just north of Houston), lived in Austin for a dozen years, and currently pays his utility bills on time in Hendersonville, North Carolina. Todd Hoke has 2 dogs and a wife. Todd Hoke has recorded & released 3 albums of music covering a wide array of topics, styles, and moods in the process. Todd Hoke has played a lot of shows. Some were utterly fantastic and some landed somewhere south of that. Blah blah blah…This is dull. How about this:
Todd Hoke has never been in a barfight but he has provided music for one. Seriously.
Todd Hoke is charmed by shiny objects.
Todd Hoke very much enjoys wearing his flipflops in situations where close-toed shoes are the expectation. Weddings, funerals, courthearings, whatever.
Todd Hoke very much wants to live in a world where strangers spontaneously burst into song. In harmony.
Todd Hoke is puzzled by pleated trousers.
Todd Hoke thinks the Blue Jays really have a shot at going all the way this year. Unless they face off against the Bears and/or Pirates. Blue Jays have no defense against Bears and/or Pirates.
Todd Hoke was kicked out of the green room at Austin City Limits shortly after saying “Excuse me.” to Eric Clapton. Todd Hoke has been exceedingly rude to rockstars ever since.
Todd Hoke is learning Bruce Springsteen’s “Nebraska” on ukulele.
Todd Hoke wears a size 13.
Todd Hoke may someday learn to tapdance. Or Todd Hoke may not. That’s how Todd Hoke is.
Todd Hoke had one grandmother named Jewel, another named Pearl, and still has an uncle named Punky who wishes everyone would call him Walter instead.
Todd Hoke earns his rent and beer money as a hospice nurse.
Todd Hoke probably couldn’t live off guacamole, but he would be willing to participate in a study to find out. For serious.
Todd Hoke very much likes Townes Van Zandt, Leon Redbone, Guy Clark, Tom Waits, and Louis Armstrong. Todd Hoke is also quite fond of his mother. And fried chicken.
Todd Hoke does not sing songs about rainbows, unicorns, or dolphins. Elves nor fairies neither. It’s good to know this up front about Todd Hoke.
Todd Hoke has a peculiar fondness for his denim jacket.
Todd Hoke (the one we’re discussing here) may or may not be the Todd Hoke doing flips on a wakeboard on Youtube.
Todd Hoke finds brussels sprouts most loathsome among vegetables.
Todd Hoke donates 100% of money from his CD sales to charity. Because Todd Hoke is a very nice person. Just like his mother says.

Guitarist Shane Parish is a composer, improviser, and educator residing in Asheville, North Carolina. He founded the avant-rock band Ahleuchatistas in 2002, which has released eight studio albums to date on esteemed creative music labels such as Tzadik Records, International Anthem, and Cuneiform Records. The band’s critically acclaimed 2004 album The Same and the Other was hailed by legendary NYC saxophonist and composer John Zorn as “one of the most intense documents of compositional rock complexity ever recorded.” Pitchfork gave it an 8.0.
In late 2016, Parish released an instrumental solo acoustic album called Undertaker Please Drive Slow, on Tzadik Records. The music for this album was conceived in a single night of inspiration in February 2016 when Parish freely interpreted several Appalachian, folk, blues, gospel, and old English tunes into his tape recorder, allowing all of his background in classical guitar, country blues, jazz, and free improvisation to blend into a seamless and effortless flow. This demo caught the ears of Zorn, who immediately offered to produce the album. When guitar maestro Marc Ribot heard these recordings he proclaimed, “Shane Parish is one of the most interesting new guitar voices to come out of the country blues tradition of Mississippi John Hurt, Lightin’ Hopkins…” Having long established his creative voice as a radical and creative electric guitarist in the long-running Ahleuchatistas, Parish now reveals a more elaborate and intimate inner world with his solo acoustic performances of whimsy, passion and virtuosity.
Join OM Sanctuary this fall for an intimate Sanctuary Concert Series. Music to uplift the spirit and warm the soul will be presented Thursday evenings, from 7:30-9:00pm, on the Sanctuary Pavilion stage located in the Multipurpose room. Experience an intriguing array of local Asheville talent offering an assortment of musical approaches, from atmospheric electronica to Appalachian folk to singer-songwriter to Kirtan. Musical groups have been hand selected to blend with the beauty and harmony of the Sanctuary nestled next to the Serenity Garden and Waterfall, creating a seamless environment conducive to relaxation and evocative of mystery.
OM Sanctuary is a non profit educational center with a mission to introduce healthy lifestyle practices through holistic education and connection to nature. The intrepid actors of WVL Radio Theatre are back, this time with a series of classic American horror stories, including one by Edgar Allen Poe, a creative retelling of the Lizzie Borden axe murders, and of course a re-imagining of Washington Irving’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Four actors, live sounds effects, and original music transport you back to 1946 when the imagination created horrors far more vivid than any that might actually be lurking in your living room… or your radio station!

The Nude Party congealed as one unit in the southern mountain town of Boone, NC in 2013 and gained their namesake very literally. Bonded by isolation, house party debauchery, a religion based on pushing the limits of bad taste, and a precocious predisposition towards the Kinks, the Animals and the Velvets, they have burgeoned into a rock and roll act to be reckoned with. As the hysteria at their local shows steadily increases, so does their reputation with local law enforcement, forcing them daily more to seek employment anywhere but home. While snooping cops seeking to stamp out indiscriminate behavior scour the borders of their homestead the Nude Ranch, the group has prodigally exiled themselves and are staying scarce with a string of self booked tours and one night stands which have linked them up with with such likes as The Growlers, The Oblivians, La Luz, Night Beats, and King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard.
Their stripped down and bare bone sound, akin to the British Invasion being transplanted back into the Carolina mountains, has so far proven to have been unrecordable… until now. The secret? Sticking to the obvious and going down into a sweaty basement with a few mics, fewer clothes and a revolving door of comrades and goddesses falling by for as long as they can take the heat. Lately the Nudes have even gotten good at playing with their clothes on. However if any audience member feels the need to participate in the spirit of exhibitionism the stakes at the Party will unblinkingly be called and raised.

Infected Mushroom
After two decades of making waves in the scene, Infected Mushroom has earned their reputation as a groundbreaking legend within electronic dance music.
Twice ranked amongst the world’s “10 Best DJ’s” by DJ Magazine, with streaming numbers in the tens of millions and a cult following of die-hard fans, the LA-based, Israeli-bred duo has created one of the most powerful kingdoms in the world of electronic music.
The combined force of Israeli producers Amit “Duvdev” Duvdevani and Erez Eisen, Infected is world renowned for their sonic innovations, genre-defying sound, and unrivaled production quality. This unique, trademark sound is created by hypnotic arrangements, complex layered melodies, and their willingness to experiment with multiple genres.
While widely recognized as pioneers of psytrance music, over the years Infected has demonstrated their ability to not only break the rules – but create their own rulebook entirely, and inspire other artists to do the same. Since 1999, they have been on a non-stop worldwide tour, selling out shows and headlining festivals around the globe.
In 2012, Erez and Duvdev delivered their most multi-faceted electronic album to date with “Army of Mushrooms” on Dim Mak Records. More recently, the duo released “CVII”, a long-awaited sequel to their critically acclaimed 2003 album “Converting Vegetarians”, followed by “Return To The Sauce”, a heavy return to their old-school psytrance roots.
Infected Mushroom’s new single “Walking On The Moon” is out now on Monstercat and is featured exclusively on the upcoming Rocket League.

Kri Samadhi
As a performer, Kri weaves a musical spell that indulges listeners into easily merging with and being uplifted by positive tracks. The sound he creates is being heralded around the planet and is breathing simmering new life into the world as if the music is propelled by a dragon high on Kundalini yoga. Kri’s superb intuition for playing to the human element produces a dance floor experience of complete immersion, of carnal union with the velvety flow of the beat, the body, the bass, the boom. Kri brings us music that forces us to remember why we are alive and to give thanks for every nuance of that sacred gift.

British talk-show host David Frost has become a lowbrow laughingstock. Richard M. Nixon has just resigned the United States presidency in total disgrace over Vietnam and the Watergate scandal. Determined to resurrect his career, Frost risks everything on a series of in-depth interviews in order to extract an apology from Nixon. The cagey Nixon, however, is equally bent on redeeming himself in his nation’s eyes. In the television age, image is king, and both men are desperate to out-talk and upstage each other as the cameras roll. The result is the interview that sealed a president’s legacy.
“Structured as a prize fight between two starkly ambitious men in professional crisis, FROST/NIXON makes it clear that the competitor who controls the camera reaps the spoils.” —NY Times.

Reclaimed Creations is a unique sculpture exhibit created by renowned artist Sayaka Ganz. Utilizing reclaimed plastic objects, such as discarded utensils, Ganz creates amazing sculptures that visually appear unified at a distance, but are in fact separated when examined up close. Described as using a “3D impressionistic” style, Ganz’s exhibit includes installations of animals in motion, which are in rich in color and energy, to create an illusion of form.
About the Artist
Born in Yokohama, Japan, Sayaka Ganz grew up living in Japan, Brazil and Hong Kong. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Indiana University, Bloomington, and a Master of Fine Arts degree in sculpture from Bowling Green State University in Ohio. A lecturer and teacher, Ganz’s work has been displayed at various institutions around the globe, including the Hermann Geiger Foundation in Cecina, Italy, the Isle Gallery in Isle of Man, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium in California.
My work is about perceiving harmony, even in situations that appear chaotic from the inside. When observing my sculptures up close, one might see gaps, holes and items being held on only by small points; step away, however, and the sculptures reveal the harmony created when the objects are aligned to the same general (but not identical) direction. Similarly, it is important to gain perspective by stepping back from current problems and look at the larger picture. Then one can perceive the beauty and patterns that exist.”
