Celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the Harlem Renaissance

The Harlem Renaissance was an unrivaled period of brilliance in both profound intelligent expression and preeminent entertainment. Created in collaboration with the National Jazz Museum in Harlem, Harlem 100 captures the sights and sounds of Harlem when legendary artists such as Fats Waller, Duke Ellington, Langston Hughes, and Billie Holiday made the neighborhood the nexus of African American culture. This multimedia performance presents musicians and dancers in a modern variety show hosted by Michael Mwenso, and pays homage to the acts made famous in the Apollo Theater, the Cotton Club, and other celebrated venues of the Harlem Renaissance. Harlem 100 celebrates one of the most influential artistic movements of our country and gives insight into Harlem then and now.

Brianna Thomas

Michela Marino Lerman
Michela Marino Lerman is a globally sought-after tap dance artist. The Huffington Post has called her a “hurricane of rhythm,” and The New York Times has described her dancing as “flashes of brilliance.”

Vuyo Sotashe
Young South African jazz vocalist Vuyo Sotashe is making his mark in the New York jazz scene. He won the very first Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival Vocal Competition, the Audience Prize Award at the Shure Montreux Jazz Voice Competition, and was the very first male vocalist ever to place in the prestigious Thelonious Monk Institute International Jazz Vocal competition’s finals.

ATS® Level 1 – Dance Fundamentals
This is an on-going class series. You’ll learn the basic system of ATS® in a fun and supportive environment. Dance Fundamentals will have you dancing ATS® in your very first class! Each one hour class is divided into two sections.

1. Drill it – Learn the basic movements of ATS® with minimal verbal instruction and lots of following along, committing the steps to muscle memory with a fun workout-style drills.
2. Dance it – Experience the magic of ATS® and learn how to use the basic steps to dance with partners in a duet, trio, and quartet formations.

You can start this on-going class series at anytime and drop-in for drills and review.

ATS® (American Tribal Style) Belly Dance is an improv tribal style belly dance that is universal worldwide with every move having a certain cue with a leader and followers in a duet, trio, or quartet formation that is always changing leads. The beauty of ATS® is a strong Flamenco influence, along with India and North Africa dance, combined into tribal style belly dance. If you know ATS® you can dance with anyone in the world that also knows ATS®, even just meeting for the first time!

Bio
Michelle has been dancing ATS® (American Tribal Style) since 2006. She has taken countless ATS® workshop classes around the United States to further her education, knowledge, and skill of ATS®. Michelle received her ATS® Teaching Certification in 2015, and had her own troupe, Mystique Mountain Tribal Belly Dance, in Charlotte before moving to the Black Mountain area.

Join us for another free legal name change clinic. We will supply you with all of the paperwork needed for the name change and help you answer any questions you may have while navigating this often confusing process. It’s easier with friends!

Our clinic is free, but there are different costs associated with the name change process that you will pay to different agencies along the way, and they are as follows:

Fingerprint fees: $10 each (you’ll need 2 sets)
State background check: $14
FBI background check: $18
Name change petition: $120
Notary fees: vary by location
There is also a charge for a new copy of your birth certificate, but that depends on what state you were born in. To find that info, check https://www.vitalchek.com.

Not all fees are due at the same time in the name change process. Fingerprints are the first step in the process which you then send off for the the state and FBI background checks. The federal background check can take up to 3 months to return, so you will have a little time to get the filing fee for the name change petition together.

If you feel like you would be more comfortable with an escort to the ID Bureau for fingerprinting or to the courthouse to file papers, please let us know in advance of the clinic date so that we can make the proper arrangements.

Join Asheville’s Dream Team as they raise funds for Asheville Humane Society in the Daphne Room at Twisted Laurel downtown Asheville. There will be vacation & stay-cation silent auction packages, various raffles, and more. Tasting tickets are $50 and include 3 tastings with 2 oz. beverage pours. The tasting tickets also include access to light bites and there is a cash bar for additional drinks. If you are not interested in the tasting option, there is also a $20 “social ticket” which includes one beer/wine and will give you access to the light bites and cash bar.

Family Fun Broadway Style Circus!

We’ve been talking to the folks from Bardic Alchemy, a Celtic Rock band from Asheville and they’ve agreed to play at Triskelion as many Tuesdays as they can come down to the Brewery.

Bardic Alchemy is a brand new element in the Celtic Rock world. This trio, based in the mountains of Asheville, North Carolina is comprised of multi-instrumentalist Connell Sanderson, guitarist Nick Marcone and percussionist and vocalist Tyler Watts.

Bardic Alchemy is best described as a psychedelic trip into a musical world that is heavily inspired by the Celtic musical traditions…run through various effects pedals. Everything from soothing, mellifluously reverberating whistle melodies supported by groovy guitar lines and thumping djembe beats to high energy dance tunes on the Scottish and Irish pipes to three part vocal harmonies and even improvised pieces, Bardic Alchemy is a surprisingly dynamic and unpredictable musical journey.

In true pub fashion, The White Horse has hosts a traditional Irish style session every Tuesday night. Sessions are in many ways the heart and soul of Irish traditional music, a place for players to share tunes and socialize. It’s not a performance, but rather an informal situation in which listeners are welcome to participate, whether offering encouragement, singing along on a chorus, or asking questions about the music and instruments. Bedouine, a gallicized riff on bedouin, the nomad, the wanderer. Anyone can assume such a name, but Azniv Korkejian has an experience of what it means, the type of ground it covers. “Moving around so much caused me at some point to feel displaced, to not really belong anywhere and I thought that was a good title.” Her development was shaped by political landscapes and family opportunities, her adult life patterned by paths of her own. Born in Aleppo, Syria to Armenian parents, Korkejian spent her childhood in Saudi Arabia, moving to America when her family won a Green Card lottery. They settled in Boston, then Houston, but she split for L.A. as soon as she could. A casual offer to stay on a horse farm took her to the rolling hills of Lexington, Kentucky, followed by a year in Austin, and a trip east to Savannah for a degree in sound design. Returning to L.A., she discovered a close-knit community of musicians in Echo Park that started to feel like home. Maybe America is just a highway that leads back to L.A.

Korkejian works with sound professionally, in dialogue editing and music editing, a slice of Hollywood’s sprawling industry. She never set out to be a singer in L.A., taking a zen approach to that part of her life, thinking that if it happens, it happens. “I just kept meeting the right people, who were professional musicians, and even though they were going on these big legitimate tours, they were still coming back to this amazing small scene, still demoing at home, and I immediately felt welcomed to join in on that. L.A. actually made me less jaded.” One day she walked into the studio of bass player / producer Gus Seyffert (Beck, Norah Jones, The Black Keys) to inquire about portable reel-to-reel tape machines and ended up cutting “Solitary Daughter in a first take. So they began another kind of journey.

Bedouine has a sound. Sixties folk meets seventies country-funk with a glimmer of bossa nova cool. Lithe guitar picking and precise lyrical excursions. That mesmerizing voice and phrasing. Working on around thirty tracks over three years, with contributions from a remarkable cast of players like guitarist Smokey Hormel (Tom Waits, Joe Strummer, Johnny Cash), Seyffert and Korkejian brought a selection of ten songs to Richmond, Virginia. She specifically sought out Spacebomb, approaching Matthew E. White after a show in L.A. He remembers listening to the song she sent over and over, on and off the road, “‘One of These Days’ became our alarm when we woke up for almost all of that tour.” Anticipating this future collaboration, the tracks were created with breathing room for the Spacebomb touch and Trey Pollard’s sinuous symphonic arrangements. Back in California, Thom Monahan (Pernice Brothers, Devendra Banhart, Vetiver) brought all the elements together in a masterful final mix.

Eschewing notions of nomadic chic, Bedouine represents minimalism motivated by travel, paring down and paring down until only the essential remains. Her music establishes a sustained and complete mood, reflecting on the unending reverberations of displacement, unafraid to take pleasure along the way. At the end of “Summer Cold” Korkejian composed an interstitial piece to recreate the sounds of her grandmother’s street in Aleppo. Partly due to America’s role in destabilizing Syria, this sonic memory is the only way to return to her birthplace. Worlds that have been lost might only be accessed through a song, in a line or a melody or a trace of tape, but they must be looked for in order to be found, so she wanders on.
