As part of the Arboretum’s “Love Birds” month-long celebration, the Arboretum will host a “Sweets with Your Sweetie” hot cocoa bar at the Baker Exhibit Center during Valentine’s Day weekend.
Guests can enjoy a free cup of hot chocolate (while supplies last) followed by a free guided hike starting at 1 p.m. Hikes will focus on the natural history of the Arboretum, including some of the region’s more prominent birds, and will be about one- to two- miles in length. Please note: Guided hikes will be on a first-come, first-served basis. The event is free; however, standard parking fees apply for non-members

The February Bicycle and Pedestrian Task Force meeting that was snowed out last week will not be rescheduled. Please plan to attend the next meeting on March 19.

Instead, I am inviting you to review two city sidewalk project plans this Friday, February 28th, between 11am and 1pm on the mezzanine of Asheville’s City Hall, 70 Court Plaza.

We have 60% plans, so plans that are on their way but not yet fully firmed up, for sidewalk on New Haw Creek Rd and on New Leicester Hwy.  The individual project managers will be there to take your comments and answer your questions.  We will be in the Water Admin conference room on the north side of the building, one floor up from the main entrance.

I often bring plans to the meeting, but there is never enough time to take a good look, so I’m trying this.  Feedback on usefulness, as well as the time, day, location, and such is welcome.  If you can’t be there at this time but still want to take a look, contact me and we can work something out.

Make your leap day 2020 memorable by signing up for the 8th annual Chilly Challenge 8K Race & 1-Mile Chili Chase Fun Run and Chili Cook-off in Weaverville, NC! Runners will enjoy a brisk scenic run and post-race celebration that includes a tasty chili lunch, live music and fantastic prizes. For runners and walkers of all ages, this event is hosted by the North Buncombe Middle School PTO and presented by TS Orthodontics to raise funding for the school.

The chip timed 8K race takes place on a rolling hills course with start and finish on the school campus. Sign up by February 15th and save! The 8K entry fees are $35 for adults and $20 for students. The 8K fees increase $5 on February 16th. The 1-Mile Chili Chase entry fee is $15. Runners will warm up after the race with a chili lunch including cornbread and fixings. The Merrell Adventure Dash is all about getting outside and challenging yourself to work hard for your good time. Suitable for families as well as adults, participants will negotiate a series of natural and man-made obstacles along the 5K course, including balance components, climbs and nets, a river-run, and raft crossing. This holiday weekend, enjoy a fun, family-friendly adventure run in the beautiful Nantahala Gorge. Merrell Adventure Dash participants can choose between the 5K dash or a 1K fun run. Kids aged 12 and under race free with a participating adult.
