brokenbones

Paul Janeway, singer of the Birmingham, Alabama–based rock and roll soul band St. Paul & The Broken Bones was born and raised in America’s Deep South and has always used his music as an outlet from which to share what was in his heart and on his mind. With a powerful voice, a magnetism for connecting with people, and a gift for music, he traded in a career in ministry to start St. Paul & The Broken Bones in 2012.

In addition to Janeway on lead vocals and co-band leader Jesse Phillips on bass and guitar, the lineup is rounded out by Browan Lollar (guitars), Andrew Lee (drums), Al Gamble (keyboards), Allen Branstetter (trumpet), Chad Fisher (trombone) and Amari Ansari (saxophone).

With the release of their 2014 debut album Half the City and its follow up, 2016’s Sea of Noise, the retro-soul band quickly found themselves on the national scene touring the world relentlessly. Janeway’s fearless showmanship, thoughtful lyrics, and dedication to his performance soon became the band’s calling card. Paired with the inventive and skillful direction of Phillips, their success ranged from opening for The Rolling Stones and headlining two nights at the Ryman Auditorium and performing at Austin City Limits to TV appearances including The Late Show with David LettermanJimmy Kimmel Live, Conan, two appearances on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, one being the very first episode.

The band’s latest project, Young Sick Camellia created a space for St. Paul & The Broken Bones to rival any forward-thinking band making music today, based on a concept all-too familiar to Janeway: family, and how we love them despite our differences.

“These guys pop out of bed with a glad James-Brown-like cry and a shiny horn section at the ready.”

AMANDA ANNE PLATT + THE HONEYCUTTERS
Jul 24 @ 7:00 pm
Salvage Station-Outdoor Stage

Amanda Anne Platt & The Honeycutters

The music of Asheville, North Carolina based outfit Amanda Anne Platt & The Honeycutters is nuanced, bringing insight and wit to the stories Platt tells through songwriting. Lyrically driven, the band’s country roots music often inspires introspection, whether it be about life on the road, heartache or hope.

There is an empathetic and charming wit ingrained in Platt’s songwriting. She has a knack for accessing a deep well of emotion and applying it to her story-telling, whether she is writing from her own experiences or immersing herself into the melody of emotions in another person’s life.

Performing along with Platt, The Honeycutters are Matt Smith (pedal steel and electric guitars), Rick Cooper (bass/vocals), and Evan Martin (drums/vocals).

An Evening with South for Winter
Jul 24 @ 7:00 pm
Isis Music Hall

South for Winter began when New Zealander Nick Stone and Coloradan Dani Cichon met as travelers in South America in 2014. There, on a Peruvian rooftop, the two wrote their first song together – one that would later become South for Winter’s first single, “Fallen Seeds.” After years spent pursuing musical projects on opposite sides of the world, Stone and Cichon joined up in Nashville in 2017 and formed a duo under the name South for Winter. The two soon met classically-trained cellist Alex Stradal, who rounded out the eclectic blend of instrumentation and vocals that has now become so characteristic of their music.

With elements of folk, blues, classical, and rock, South for Winter’s varying sound is united by storytelling lyrics, complex instrumentation, and earthy vocals.

Come enjoy an evening of live music, food and drinks at the Isis Music Hall.  Advance Reservations are highly recommended.

Grant Peeples
Jul 24 @ 7:00 pm

He has made eleven studio records, and three poetry books. He tours coast-to-coast, primarily as a solo artist, but often with a side man. He usually plays festivals with his band The Peeples Republik.

Come enjoy an evening of live music, food and drinks in the Isis Music Hall Lounge. Reservations are highly recommended.

Asheville at Pack Square Park’s Roger McGuire Green

Shindig on the Green, free outdoor concert in downtown Asheville

Bring your instruments, families, friends, lawn chairs and blankets and join us for good times at the Bascom Lamar Lunsford Stage. In 2021 Shindig on the Green, which features a stage show and informal jam sessions around the park, continues at its original location — formerly known as City County Plaza, now transformed into the new Pack Square Park. Locals and visitors alike come together downtown “along about sundown,” or at 7:00pm for those who wear a watch, until 10:00p.m. Concessions are available. Come experience the beautiful music and dance traditions of Southern Appalachia on a summer evening in the mountains.

Since 1967, this mountain tradition features an always-enjoyable variety of performances by:

  • Long-standing house band The Stoney Creek Boys
  • Bluegrass and Old-Time String Bands
  • Big Circle Mountain Dancers
  • Clog Dancers
  • Smooth Dancers
  • Ballad Singers
  • Storytellers

Shindig on the Green was voted “#1 Local Outdoor Concert” three years in a row — 2006, 2007, and 2008 — by readers of Asheville’s independent weekly newspaper Mountain Xpress in its annual “Best of WNC” edition. In 2019, Shindig on the Green was selected as the 2nd Place “Uniquely Asheville” award winner for Holiday Event – Summer/Fall.

The Folk Heritage Committee produces Shindig on the Green and its sister event, the Mountain Dance and Folk Festival, to support the preservation and continuation of the traditional music, dance and storytelling heritage of the Southern Appalachian Mountains. Between 3,000 and 5,000 people attend Shindig on the Green evenings for free throughout the summer. In addition to throngs of locals, visitors routinely travel from out of state, across the country, and even around the world to make their way to downtown Asheville for Shindig on the Green.

Shindig on the Green occurs thanks to the talent and generosity of its volunteer musicians and dancers who span several generations much to the delight of those in attendance. From young children perfecting their square dance steps to great-grandmothers singing ballads passed down through the years, the region’s wealth of traditional talent takes center stage. Since the outdoor event’s inception in 1967, hundreds of thousands of individuals from across the region and throughout the world have shared and enjoyed the rich traditional music and dance heritage of the Southern Appalachian Mountains in this outdoor setting.

2021 Shindig Dance Team line-up To Be Announced

Parking for buses is available at the Asheville Public Works Building parking lot at 161 S. Charlotte Street. This lot is vacant on Saturday nights. It is recommended that passengers unload at Pack Square Park before the bus is parked in the lot.
